Buy Google Glass Today In The U.S.

We previously reported that it was possible Google might allow everyone to purchase a Glass unit this week. The report was later confirmed by the company. Anyone can buy Google Glass in the U.S. today provided that they reside in the country, customers will need a U.S. shipping address. No, Google hasn’t publicly released its hotly anticipated wearable gadget yet. Its merely expanding the Explorer Program, so Google Glass units are only being offered today.

Since its selling Explorer Edition units, customers will have to pay Explorer Edition prices. If you want to pick up a Glass unit today be prepared to shell out $1,500. Customers will be able to choose colors and a free accessory such as a frame or shade of their choice. Additional accessories like earbuds, a charging kit and carrying case can also be added to the order.

Once the order has been placed, Google promises that it will ship your unit within five to seven business days. Customers that want to use Glass with prescription lenses will need to buy them for the unit as a separate item. Glass fans outside the U.S. are out of luck. Google hasn’t said when it plans to expand the Explorer Program outside the country. It may not even do so, considering the fact that the public release of Google Glass is expected later this year anyway.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Scanner Spoofed

Samsung Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Scanner Spoofed

Samsung jumped on the biometric bandwagon as well this year. It put a fingerprint scanner in the home button of its 2014 flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S5. Its a bit different from its counterpart on the iPhone 5s. Users have to swipe from top to bottom whereas on the iPhone 5s they simply have to place their fingers on the home button. Initial reports suggest that the fingerprint scanner seems to be working fine for most users. One might expect that the scanner offers an additional layer of protection, but as it turns out, its not that hard to spoof it.

The folks at SRLabs have been able to spoof the fingerprint scanner of Galaxy S5 by using a lifted print. Within minutes they were able to create a “dummy finger” which was then used to gain access. Now there’s nothing inherently wrong with the scanner, even the scanner on iPhone 5s can be spoofed this way.

Implementation of the scanner can prove to be a risk though. Unlike Apple, the scanner on Galaxy S5 can even be used to authorize PayPal payments. Apple doesn’t allow developers to tap into TouchID, all it can do is provide access and authorize purchases on iTunes. Moreover, Apple requires users to punch in their password one time before using fingerprint for authentication. So if a device is powered off, users will first have to enter the password after they boot it up, before they’re allow to use the scanner. Galaxy S5 doesn’t have this gatekeeping mechanism.

A video of this spoof has also been posted online, showing us just how easy it is to trick these fingerprint sensors. Paranoid users might want to wipe the scanner down after every time they use it, but that’s just too much of a nuisance.

Steve Jobs Movie Will Not Be Directed By David Fincher

Steve Jobs Movie Will Not Be Directed By David Fincher

If you were not satisfied by the Ashton Kutcher starring “Jobs” movie, fret not, there’s another Steve Jobs movie in the pipeline. Being written by Aaron Sorkin, of The Social Network fame, the film will play out in three scenes which will chart three crucial events in the co-founder’s life. No word as yet on who will be cast to play the former Apple CEO, Christian Bale is rumored to be in the running. Previously it was reported that David Fincher could be tapped to direct the film, but now a new report claims that Fincher has left the project.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, David Fincher had “aggressive” demands that Sony Pictures didn’t want to meet. Apparently he asked for $10 million in wages apart from control of the movie’s marketing. Sorkin and Fincher have both previously worked together on The Social Network, a film focusing on the dramatic rise of Facebook.

It is unclear who will be tapped next to direct the movie. Apparently it was Fincher who was pushing the studio to consider Christian Bale for the lead role. That might change when a new director comes onboard. Filming isn’t expected to begin until next year, so Steve Jobs fans might have to wait a while before they get to see another movie about him on the big screen.
