Medicinal Soft Drinks and Coca-Cola Fiends: The Toxic History of Soda

Medicinal Soft Drinks and Coca-Cola Fiends: The Toxic History of Soda

Soda’s reputation has fallen a bit flat lately: The all-American beverage most recently made headlines due to an FDA investigation of a potential carcinogen, commonly called “caramel coloring,” used in many soft-drink recipes. This bit of drama follows other recent stories that paint an unflattering picture of the soda industry, including New York’s attempt to ban super-sized drinks, the eviction of soda machines from many public schools, and a spate of new soda-tax proposals. All these regulations are designed to mitigate the unhealthy impacts of Big Soda, such as increasing childhood obesity, in the same way restrictions were slapped on cigarettes in years past.

Codemasters Teases Announcements, New F1 Title Likely

Codemasters Teases Announcements, New F1 Title Likely

Judging by the comments left by Codemasters community team on their official blog, it seems like they’re gearing up to make announcements this week. Lee Williams, a community manager, teased that “developers are getting builds ready, the PR guys are preparing PR stuff and the Community Team are busy teasing something…” The developer has been hinting at new titles quite a lot recently without actually jumping into specifics, it’s likely that later this week it may finally have something good to unveil.

Part of the announcement could be related to new Codemasters titles for next generation consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Possible announcements include the new F1 title, as well as a new title for the DiRT franchise. Codemasters may even announce a new GRID title if its feeling too generous. These are merely presumptions, the developer hasn’t confirmed as yet when it may or may not announce.

As far as the new F1 title is concerned, previous rumors suggest that Codemasters will release the game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well. It may very well be the last Formula 1 title for previous generation consoles before the developer shifts its focus entirely to next-gen releases only. It is unclear right now if new GRID and DiRT titles will also be compatible with previous-gen consoles. The community team hasn’t provided an exact date on which we can expect the announcements. We’ll keep an eye out for you.

In-House iPhone Baseband Chip Development ‘Herculean’ Task [Analyst]

In House iPhone Baseband Chip Development Herculean Task [Analyst]

Last week it was rumored that Apple might be looking to start developing baseband chips for future iPhones in-house. Currently it sources said chips from companies such as Qualcomm. Apparently it has already started putting together a new engineering team, recent hires corroborate the rumors. Apple’s custom baseband chips were not expected to be seen before 2015, but today an analyst estimates that it may take Apple as much as five years to develop a custom baseband chip. The analyst doesn’t believe Apple will take on this “herculean task.”

In a note to investors, Deutsche Bank analyst Brian Modoff says that the issue in developing a custom baseband doesn’t have to do with the money Apple is willing to spend on it, rather the time it needs to create the chip. According to his estimates, Apple would need five years at the very least, with top-tier talent and as many as 1,000 engineers to accomplish this.

Modoff believes that instead of moving design and development in-house, Apple may simply be looking to better integrate existing baseband chips with their apps processor. He also believes that the company might be considering developing its own internal Wi-Fi chipset. Modoff’s comment echo JP Morgan analyst Rod Hall’s, who termed baseband chip development and design as “notoriously difficult.”

For those who don’t know, a baseband chip is an essential component in any mobile device since it allows the device to communicate over cellular networks.

Google Picks Up Titan Aerospace Before Facebook Can

Google Picks Up Titan Aerospace Before Facebook Can

We often hear rumors about offers and counteroffers whenever a major company makes a big acquisition. For example, when Snapchat was reportedly being courted, it received multiple bids from Facebook and Google. The same was rumored for WhatsApp, which Facebook ultimately bought for $19 billion, and Google claimed it hadn’t even placed a bid. Recently several reports claimed Facebook was interested in drone maker Titan Aerospace, offering as much as $60 million. Google today announced that it has acquired Titan Aerospace.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google hasn’t disclosed the financial terms behind this acquisition. However, the company did confirm that following the acquisition, about 20 or so employees of Titan will continue to work in their New Mexico office. Titan’s CEO Vern Raburn will continue running the day to day operations.

Titan Aerospace develops high-altitude solar powered drones. It claims that these drones can provide speeds of up to 1GB per second and hopes to begin commercial operations by next year. Speeds of 1GB per second are faster than most broadband connections in the U.S. as well as other developed countries.

In a statement, a Google spokesman said that atmospheric satellites could help bring internet access to millions of people around the world, particularly those in remote locations. “It’s still early days,” the spokesman said. Even DARPA has been thinking around the same lines. It is working on a project that utilizes unused drones from Iraq and kits them with a pod that can provide internet where needed.

The Johammer J1 is an electric bike that doesn’t mess around

Johammer J1
We all want to ditch our gas-guzzling vehicles in search of a cleaner and less expensive option. Sadly, most of what’s on the market has an initial cost that is so high that it’s not worth it. The other issue being that most of them can’t go very far.

If you’re wanting to switch to an electric bike, but are concerned about the range, then the Johammer J1 might be an option. If you have the money to make the change that is, seeing that it costs around $31,600. This can charge in close to four hours, which will be the equivalent of 125 miles. This can go anywhere from 30-60+ miles an hour, which isn’t too bad compared with most.

The rearview mirror has high-resolution displays that will show all relevant driving information you would need to know while on the road. Probably the best part, which will be a drawback to some, is that this has a completely silent motor, meaning you’ll be able to hear the birds sing as you cruise down the road. This is available in silver, white, blue, yellow, and green, and looks like a blend between new and old world. It has a brush-less AC-motor with a single-level gear, both running in oil bath with lifetime lubrication, and is maintenance free. Regardless of all its snazziness, it still costs a boatload of money, and won’t be useful year-round.
