Nature Documentary Being Filmed Specifically For The Oculus Rift

Nature Documentary Being Filmed Specifically For The Oculus RiftOne of the perks of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is that it can immerse the wearer in whatever it is that they’re doing, whether it be for gaming or for video watching. Now for those who own the Oculus Rift device, you might be interested to learn that Sir David Attenborough is working on a new nature documentary that has been designed to be viewed on the Oculus Rift.

The programme will be titled “Conquest of the Skies” and is currently in the process of being filmed by Atlantic Productions. According to the programme, it should allow viewers to immerse themselves in a full 360-degree view of Borneo. According to Atlantic’s commercial director, John Morris (via realscreen), “We’re now filming for the Oculus Rift, so when we filmed our recent flight in Borneo, we filmed with an eight-camera rig, so you got the full 360° experience.”

It sounds like a pretty cool idea and Morris even expects that such films could be one of the ways that the Oculus Rift could appeal to non-gamers. In a way that makes sense because as it stands, the Oculus Rift is primarily seen as a gaming device and has been mostly used in conjunction with video games to make them seem more real and immersive.

However by using it to view movies, it could offer up an entirely brand new experience, not to mention with the screens right before your eyes, you might not even need a large screen TV anymore. Facebook announced last month that they would be acquiring Oculus VR, the company behind Oculus Rift. While it’s good news for the company and the technology, since Facebook has the resources to help them progress, not every was smitten by the deal.

Crysis 1 And 2 To Lose Multiplayer Functionality After GameSpy Closes

Crysis 1 And 2 To Lose Multiplayer Functionality After GameSpy ClosesSome gamers might have heard by now that GameSpy’s services will be shutting down on the 31st of May. What this means is that some games will end up losing multiplayer support, but at the same time some of these games are pretty old so there is a chance that not that many gamers will be affected.

However if you’re one of those who are still playing titles such as Crysis 1 and Crysis 2, you might be disappointed to learn that GameSpy’s shutdown will affect your multiplayer experience as it effectively renders the feature useless. Unfortunately it seems that Crytek, the developer behind the titles, will not be doing anything about it.

According to a statement made by Crytek, “The single-player campaigns in both games are unaffected by this transition, and the multiplayer mode in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 versions of Crysis 2 remain playable.” They later add, “We’d like to thank everyone who has taken up arms in Crysis and Crysis 2′s multiplayer modes in the last few years, and apologize to the small but dedicated community of PC players who are still actively competing against one another.”

This is a stark contrast to EA’s decision which involved the publisher thinking of ways to transition older Battlefield games onto their servers so as to allow multiplayer to continue working. Not all Battlefield titles will be moved to EA’s servers, but as it stands EA is eyeing titles such as Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 2142. So, any of our readers still playing multiplayer games of Crysis 1 or 2 on their PC?

Netherlands’ Glow In The Dark Highway Is Now A Reality

Netherlands Glow In The Dark Highway Is Now A RealityBack in 2012 there was a concept created by a Dutch designer that suggested that glow in the dark road markings should be used in place of street lights. The goal is to make the roads more interactive while at the same time help to cut down on the amount of electricity and resources required to maintain street lights, especially on long stretches of a highway.

Well it looks like the concept has stopped being a concept and is now a reality, at least as far as a certain highway stretch in the Netherlands is concerned. At this point in time, one of Netherlands’ highways, the N329 highway in Oss, has replaced its streetlights with glow in the dark road markings that stretch as far as 500m.

The glow in the dark markings are created using a photo-luminescent powder that has been integrated into the road paint and has been painted onto the roads by road construction company, Heijmans. The goal is to eventually add more areas as well as include technology such as weather markings, like snow drops, that would illuminate once it hits a certain temperature.

Unfortunately due to the lack of contracts, expansion of this plan is still on hold. While we admit that this sounds like a really cool idea, there is the question of sustainability. How will the paint hold up to cars driving on them constantly? After all patchy pieces of glow in the dark markings aren’t exactly safe, nor are they as efficient as evenly lit streets, but either way it is a good start. What do you guys think?

Titanfall Sales In The UK Up By 220% After Xbox 360 Version

Titanfall Sales In The UK Up By 220% After Xbox 360 VersionWhile Titanfall for the Xbox 360 was delayed and launched later than the PC and Xbox One version of the game, its developers, Bluepoint Games, did promise gamers that it would be a “true experience” which many were worried about since the Xbox 360 isn’t as powerful as the Xbox One.

Based on all the reviews that we’ve read so far about the Xbox 360 version, it seems that Bluepoint Games did manage to deliver as they promised. It is probably why, and also probably because there are a ton of gamers still playing the Xbox 360, that sales of the game went as high as 220% in the UK after its launch.

According to reports, it seems that the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall has been very well-received in the UK and managed to head to the top of the all-formats UK sales charts. This isn’t that surprising given that Titanfall has been heavily anticipated, and that Respawn Entertainment and Bluepoint Games have not disappointed in their promises to deliver.

In fact earlier reports suggested that the game even managed to help boost the sales of the Xbox One console in the UK, perhaps implying that gamers were rushing out to get their hands on the Xbox One just to play the game and also probably in anticipation of future Xbox One titles as well. What do you guys think? Any of our readers play the Xbox 360 version and are you that surprised that it sold so well?

Watch Dogs’ Ultra Specs Revealed

Over the past few months, Ubisoft has revealed both the minimum and recommended hardware specifications for gamers who are planning on playing Watch Dogs on their computers. For the most part, the minimum specifications shouldn’t be too hard for most gamers to meet, assuming that they have a decent graphics card and relatively new hardware.

Gamers striving for recommended will probably need slightly better hardware and make the jump towards a high mid-range or high-end GPU. However we can only imagine that there are some gamers out there who want to be able to run the game at its maximum settings while enjoying at least 60 frames per second, and in a recent tweet by Jonathan Morin, the ultra specs have been revealed.

According to Morin, gamers are strongly suggested to have an Intel Core i7-4770K processor with a GeForce 780 GPU, which at the moment is one of the higher-end NVIDIA graphics cards available at the moment, the GeForce Titan notwithstanding. Morin also states that the latest Watch Dogs trailer was recorded with a previous-gen Intel processor, the i7-3930K and a GeForce Titan, so you liked what you see in the trailer (video above) and want to replicate that experience on your PC, those are some of the specs you should be aiming for.

In any case we reckon that the GeForce Titan and the GeForce 780 are a bit out of reach for most gamers as these are some pretty pricey GPUs, so if you don’t mind running the game at less than 60fps, or enjoying it at medium settings, then the recommended system specs should be more than enough to get you by, but if you’re aiming for the stars, better start breaking out that credit card!

Reporter Assaulted For Wearing Google Glass In Public

Reporter Assaulted For Wearing Google Glass In PublicWhen Google unveiled Glass, it was to much applause and fanfare. After all it was a relatively new piece of technology and after all the movies we’ve seen involving heads up displays, we could finally be able to get one for ourselves! Unfortunately not everyone feels the same way and while there are some who might feel uncomfortable around people wearing it, there are those who would openly assault a Glass-wearer.

We’ve seen this happen before and it has happened again to reporter Kyle Russell who had his Glass snatched from his face and flung to the ground without any prior provocation. According to Russell, he and his colleague were covering a protest which involved a Google employee who was evicting several tenants after buying a home in an area.

“The aforementioned colleague and I were on our way to the 16th Street BART station when a person put their hand on my face and yelled, “Glass!” In an instant the person was sprinting away, Google Glass in hand.” Russell attempted to give chase but was unable to catch up in time before the person smashed the device onto the ground and ran off.

We suppose it could have been Russell being at the wrong place and wearing the wrong device. After all it could easily be construed that Russell was an ardent support of Google, after all why else would he be wearing their products, right? However at the same time it does seem ridiculous that anyone would assault someone, unprovoked mind you, over a piece of technology.

However this kind of reaction is to be expected. After all a recent poll has revealed that 72% of people would not wear Glass in public and that privacy concerns would hold them back from purchasing it. This probably comes at a bad time especially when Google has announced that for one day only, they would be selling Glass to the public on the 15th of April. While professionals have found Glass to be immensely useful, we guess the general public does not feel the same way.

What do you guys think? Is Google Glass a little ahead of its time, or do people just need to be better educated on what Glass is and what it can do? After all it’s not that much different from someone holding a smartphone and using it to record a video.
