Samsung Galaxy S5 Will Be Region-Locked As Well

Samsung Galaxy S5 Will Be Region Locked As WellWhen Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 3 back in 2013, it was discovered that the phone came region-locked, meaning that if you bought the device through a grey market import, you’d have to find some way to get a SIM card from the country that it originated from, use it for a few minutes, and you’d be good to go.

This was a minor inconvenience but it was a way for Samsung to curb the number of grey market imports and to discourage the practice. Unfortunately it looks like with the Galaxy S5, Samsung has made things slightly more difficult. Not only will you require a SIM card from the country the phone originated from, but you would also be required to make a 5 minute phone call in order to bypass the lock.

This is according to a sticker found taped on the Galaxy S5’s box which reads, European Model: This product should be activated with a SIM card issued from a mobile operator within Europe. (as defined EU/EEA, Switzerland and the following Non-EEA countries Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M), Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Serbia and Vatican City.) To use SIM cards from other regions, a cumulative call over five minutes must first be made with the SIM card from European operators.

For those who are planning on getting their model through grey market imports, we’re not sure where you might be able to get yourself a SIM card from the country it has been imported in. Then again with all this trouble, perhaps grey market importers might be discouraged from such practices, or at the very least prepare a SIM card for their customers to use in order to activate the device.

EA Looking To Transition Older Battlefield Titles From GameSpy’s Servers

EA Looking To Transition Older Battlefield Titles From GameSpys ServersAbout a week ago, we reported that GameSpy, the online gaming service, would be shutting its doors on the 31st of May. The service has been around for the longest time ever and we guess all good things must come to an end eventually, right? Unfortunately what this means is that some games might lose their multiplayer functionality, and some of the titles that utilized GameSpy’s services included some older Battlefield titles.

Now the good news is that while we doubt there are many gamers who are still playing some of the older Battlefield titles, EA has announced that they will be working on a transition that will bring the games onto other services where multiplayer games will continue to live on. According to an EA official, “We’re working on finding a transition, but still have technical hurdles to overcome. We will make an announcement when there is news to share.”

Unfortunately not every Battlefield game will be making the cut but according to EA, they have named three titles which includes Battlefield 2, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 2142, so if you are still playing those games and would love to continue playing them with friends, hopefully EA will come up with a way to let you keep doing so.

Sony Unveils H1Z1, Upcoming Zombie MMO Title

Love survival-style games like DayZ or Rust? Well if you do, you might be interested to learn that Sony has recently announced that they are working on a zombie MMO game called H1Z1. Given that name, we can only assume that this references the H1Ni swine flu virus that was making its round a few years ago, a virus which many considered to be extremely deadly.

According to John Smedley, Sony Online Entertainment’s head, he revealed the game’s backstory on the game’s Subreddit. “The H1Z1 virus devastated mankind and left nothing but death and destruction in its wake and a world nearly empty of human life where the remnants of humanity are in a fight against extinction against those infected with the virus.”

Smedley later adds, “It’s been 15 years since H1Z1 was first encountered and what’s left of the world before is overrun with the Infected. Humanity has been reduced to hiding in the shadows, searching desperately for food and water and anything that can help to survive even for another day.”

Like we said earlier, this sounds a lot like a survival-styled game like DayZ and Rust and apparently Smedley was more than anticipated when it came to such comparisons. According to him, he claims that what will differentiate H1Z1 from the competition would be SOE’s experience from creating MMO franchises like EverQuest and PlanetSide.

He also states that the game will utilize Sony’s next-gen Forgelight engine that will be able to host thousands of gamers across multiple servers, each with their own set of rules. If you love zombies and MMOs, we reckon that H1Z1 sounds like a very promising game so if you’d like to learn more and see some H1Z1 gameplay footage, check out the video above for the details.

Do Cow Farts Actually Contribute to Global Warming?

Do Cow Farts Actually Contribute to Global Warming?

There are currently approximately 1.3 to 1.5 billion cows grazing, sleeping, and chewing their cud at any given time on planet Earth. And these 1,300 pound (average weight for both a beef and dairy cow) animals eat a lot. Much like humans, when they eat, gas builds up inside of their guts and has to be expelled. (See Why Beans Make You Fart) Cows fart and burp… a lot. The result is a large amount of methane being introduced into the atmosphere.

Micro 3D Printer Kickstarter Hits The $2 Million Mark In 3 Days

Micro 3D Printer Kickstarter Hits The $2 Million Mark In 3 DaysAbout a few days ago we reported on the Micro 3D printer that begun as a Kickstarter project. The project, according to its creators, managed to hit its original goal in about 11 minutes and if you thought that was impressive, the folks behind the printer have recently posted another update on the project where they are reporting that the Kickstarter project has since managed to hit the $2 million mark in 3 days!

We have to admit that this is extremely impressive and for those who are interested in getting their hands on the printers, you are still able to back the project which will nab you the device once the project has ended and production begins. However with so many orders, there is a chance that your order could be delayed.

However the folk behind the project have stated that with more money coming in, it allows them to hire more staff, which in turn could help make the process a lot smoother which hopefully will not result in any unnecessary delays. They aren’t making any promises but it seems that they are doing everything that they can to make sure this will not happen.

For those unfamiliar with the Micro 3D printer, the printer is basically a small 3D printer that will fit on your desk, unlike other 3D printers which tend to be pretty huge. In fact according to the design, it seems that the Micro is well, micro, and is actually about the size of a cat, so you can only imagine how small it is.

The Micro will also come with a more intuitive software interface that lets you download plans and print, and with a weight of around 1kg, you can bring it with you from the home to the office no problem. It’s hard to say why the Micro is doing as well it is, but we can’t wait for them to start shipping it out.

Man’s Breakup Text To Fiancée Might Have Cost Him $50,000

Mans Breakup Text To Fiancée Might Have Cost Him $50,000We have learnt time and time again that the things we post and say digitally can never be taken back, as much as many of us would love to. What this means is that the next time you decide to send a text message, post a tweet, update your Facebook status, you might want to think twice because you never know when it’s going to come back and bite you.

One man learnt this the hard way when he decided to end things with his fiancee via text message. According to Buffalo News, the man tried to calm his fiancee down by placating her, sending her a message which read, “Plus you get a $50,000 parting ring. Enough for a down payment on a house.”

What the man failed to realized is that under New York state law, the men are allowed to legally ask for the engagement ring back if a wedding does not take place. Unfortunately by sending that text message, it basically implied that he was giving his fiancee the ring as a parting gift, which meant that he was not allowed to ask for it back legally.

According to the judge presiding over the case, “The text messages … have persuaded this court that it is highly probable that a valid gift was given to her after the engagement was terminated.” Ouch, that had to be a very expensive lesson!
