Hackers Bunnie Huang and Sean “xobs” Cross have launched a fundraiser for their open source laptop, the Novena. It looks very different from its prototype, but the idea behind it remains the same: a computer with transparent and easily modifiable hardware and software.
The Novena comes in four platforms. There’s a barebones board…
a compact desktop version with an easy access case, a 13.3″ 1080p TFT LCD screen, internal accessory connectors and an LVDS to eDP adapter board…
a laptop version which mainly adds a battery pack and a 240GB SSD to the desktop version…
and a high-end Heirloom version put together by custom gadget and furniture maker Kurt Mottweiler. It’s based on the laptop version but has a handcrafted wood and aluminum case, a Lenovo Trackpoint Bluetooth keyboard, a 480GB Intel 730 SSD.
As you can see the standard desktop and laptop versions don’t have a keyboard included and have a reverse clamshell design. This makes it easier to access the Novena’s internals and keeps them well-ventilated. The cases of the laptop and desktop also have what Bunnie and xobs call Peek Arrays, which are M2.5 mounting holes for installing additional circuit boards and other parts.
Finally, the panel with matching port holes is replaceable. If you reconfigured the Novena board and ended up with a different arrangement or lineup of ports, you can replace the vanilla panel with one that matches your rig.

It has been crafted from stainless steel and aluminum alloy which measures a mere 4mm thin, where the keyboard’s elegant look allows one to type comfortably and accurately for long periods of time thanks to the scissor key structure and floating chiclet keys. You will also find illuminated multimedia touch keys at the top of the keyboard, where they would light up as it detects your hand moving closer.
As for the second component of the 8900P, it would be the 7800P wireless laser mouse that has half a dozen buttons and a zoom in/out slide switch. Being a full-size mouse that has a high-definition laser engine, it is a snap to control and navigate. There is also a 4D scroll wheel that makes it possible to scroll horizontally and vertically, where you can choose between 800 DPI (for accuracy) and 1600 DPI (for fast movements) with the push of one key. The Rapoo 8900P would retail for $89.99 per set.

Most of the time, we would think of digital cameras as sensitive devices, and they rightly are. After all, how many of you would not bother to cringe if you knock your digital camera against the corner of a table or the side of a wall by accident? Dropping your camera is an even worse clanger to experience, as something is bound to chip off or dent at the very best, and at the worse, you might have to purchase a whole brand new camera. Olympus understands this, which is why they have come up with the Olympus STYLUS TOUGH TG-3, where it will be able to deliver a new level of performance for the Tough series of rugged cameras, as it sports a high-speed f2.0 lens (25mm–100mm), expanded macro photography capabilities, GPS, and built-in Wi-Fi.
Of course, shooting photos under normal conditions would not be a challenge regardless of the digital camera that you use, but when the weather starts to turn foul, perhaps it is time for you to start to consider a waterproof camera, or at the very least, a weatherproof one. Case in point, the Olympus STYLUS TOUGH TG-3, where it has been specially built for it to be able to withstand extreme conditions. Just how tough is it to be able to live up to its namesake? Well, this camera happens to be freezeproof to -10℃ (14°F), waterproof to 50 feet (15 m), shockproof from seven feet (2.1 m), crushproof to 220 pounds (100 kgf) and dustproof.
As for its performance, you need not fret, since it will come with a high-speed f2.0–4.9, 4.5–8.0mm (25mm–100mm) wide-aperture lens that will work in tandem with its TruePic VII image processor, which is the same one that is found in Olympus’ award-winning OM-D series of interchangeable lens cameras, in addition to a 16.0 megapixel backlit CMOS sensor that allows it to capture images with minimal noise, even in low-light situations.
