Apple Trademark Change Fuels iWatch Frenzy

Apple Trademark Change Fuels iWatch Frenzy

In U.S. trademark filings product categories are divided into 45 classes. Apple seeks to extend its corporate trademark so that its name qualifies for cover under Class 14 as well. Definition for this class states: “This class includes mainly precious metals, goods in precious metals, and, in general, jewelry, clocks and watches.” This means that Apple wants its name protected in the jewelry and watch business. Whenever Apple and watch are mentioned in the same sentence these days it has something to do with its much rumored smartwatch, the iWatch.

This is actually the first time Apple has applied for this trademark extension in the U.S. It has already filed for similar extensions in the U.K., Norway, Mexico and Ecuador. Last year Apple applied for ownership of the iWatch product name, fueling speculation that it was indeed working on a smartwatch. Though so far this product hasn’t materialized.

Recent reports and analyst predictions suggest that Apple iWatch is destined for release later this year, presumably in fall. It is believed to have a flexible OLED display and many fitness related features. Apparently iOS 8′s focus on mobile health and fitness tracking will be aided by relevant data collected by the smartwatch.

Despite Apple’s own claim of entering new product categories this year, the company is yet to confirm that it is working on a wearable device, a smartwatch to be precise. For now rumors are all there is.

LG G3 Mini Headed For AT&T (Rumor)

LG G3 Mini Headed For AT&T (Rumor)The upcoming flagship LG G3 device has yet to be officially released, but it does seem as though there is a mini version of the LG G3 already. Rumors of the LG G3 mini have begun to make its rounds, where a device that carries the model number LG D725 has been seen in a leaked document, carrying the codename “B2 mini”. Considering how the LG G3 is widely tipped by many to be called the B2, the B2 mini would naturally lead one to conclude that this is the LG G3 mini.

In the leaked document, the the LG D725 happens to be the AT&T variant of the device, which means we could be looking at the LG G3 mini making its way to AT&T in due time. Some of the hardware specifications that were mentioned in the document would include a 720p display of unknown resolution, Android 4.4.2 KitKat as the operating system of choice, an 8-megapixel shooter located at the back.

Of course, do take this particular rumor with a pinch of salt since it is not that difficult to forge documents, although it would not be surprising to see the LG G3 mini materialize considering how major smartphone manufacturers are moving in the mini direction for their flagship models.

Google Glass SMS iPhone Support Coming Soon

Google Glass SMS iPhone Support Coming Soon

Recently Google Glass was updated to Android KitKat and now the company is working on another software update for its wearable gadget. Later this week an update will be released for this device. The update will finally bring Google Glass SMS support for the iPhone. It will also bring a new calendar application for the wearable.

Android users have always been able to read and send text messages through Glass. The unit first had to be paired to their handset using MyGlass application. Once it was paired texts would automatically be routed to Google Glass. Users could then tell Glass to reply and simply dictate their message.

Even though Glass can be paired with the iPhone, the smartphone has never been able to beam text messages to it. The upcoming update changes that. However there’s a catch. Users will only be able to view text messages on Google Glass, they won’t be able to reply “due to some limitations with iOS,” Google says.

The aforementioned calendar application will be a new addition for Glass. It will display the user’s agenda once turned on to the left of the home screen. From there users will be able to dismiss, send RSVP or change title, location and time of an event. Recently Google allowed everyone in the U.S. to purchase Google Glass units, it is believed to be a sign that the company might be gearing up for a public launch later this year.

New Apple Data Centers Hope To Shrink Carbon Footprint

New Apple Data Centers Hope To Shrink Carbon FootprintIt seems that Apple has edged a whole lot closer to running all of its facilities on renewable energy – at 100%, no less. This would definitely be quite the triumphant achievement regardless of which industry you’re in, where right now, its corporate campuses and data centers happen to be at the 94% mark – and counting towards the magical 100% number. As for their next step, Apple hopes to see such eco-friendly efforts extend to include its numerous retail stores that dot major cities around the globe.

Of course, such ambition is also dependent on one’s perspective, as Apple has not taken into consideration the manufacturing, transport, and use of its actual products, which so far, makes up 98% of its carbon footprint. Still, this is not an accomplishment to be scoffed at where its facilities are concerned, since data centers have been well known to be major culprits when it comes to energy consumption.

Greenpeace has already given praise to Apple earlier this month for the green-ness of their data centers. Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president for environmental initiatives, shared, “No one can ever claim again you can’t have a data center that runs on 100 percent renewable. Once those proof points are out there, it makes it easier for policies to follow.”

Apple TV Gets Three New Channels Today

Apple TV Gets Three New Channels Today

As it continues to expand content sources on its set-top box, Apple today added three new channel to the Apple TV. Cable subscribers will now be able to download apps for A&E, The History Channel and Lifetime on their set-top boxes, courtesy of A&E Networks. However Apple TV users will require a cable subscription to access these content sources. Supported cable providers include DirecTV, Cablevision Optimum and Verizon FiOS. The network has said that it will add support for other major as well as local providers, but doesn’t say exactly what it will do that.

Over the past few months Apple has greatly expanded the content offering on its set-top box to better compete against rivals like Roku. Support for ABC and Bloomberg was added only recently, apart from the release of HBO Go for Apple TV.

The increasing number of content apps might serve Apple’s purpose of keeping the set-top box afloat, but they do much when it comes to increasing sales. For that a new Apple TV is required, which the company reportedly plans on launching later this year. Apparently it will come with a standalone App Store as well as the ability to play games. It will also have the current crop of content applications. The new Apple TV will come with better internal hardware and presumably design changes as well.

Oculus Rift Lets You Enjoy Hoverboard Action

Remember Marty McFly’s hoverboard in Back to the Future II? Well, we might not be able to stroll into any store at the moment in order to pick up a hoverboard and ride it home, but this does not mean that one is unable to experience something like that, courtesy of clever coding as well as the Oculus Rift hardware.

Developer Kieran Lord (who also goes by the handle Cratesmith on Twitter) has made good use of Oculus Rift as well as a Wii Balance Board in order to give one an experience as close as possible to riding an actual hoverboard.

Lord shared, “The way I’m imagining the hoverboard physics is slightly different to the BTTF maglev skateboard. It’s more a snowboard with a ‘virtual slope’ of the front/back angle of the board. If that works and feels good the player could just get up a ton of speed and then stomp their back foot to get the same effect as going over a jump ramp.”

The Oculus Rift hardware, when coupled with the right kind of coding, would definitely be able to help us experience new environments, as well as give even the dying a chance to be able to relive some of the more soul soothing moments in their lives.
