The original HTC One (M7) was more than just a decent smartphone – it was a high end flagship device that deserved its plaudits, but unfortunately, there was a perception issue with the brand that most probably limited its sales figure, registering sales of 5 million units within its first two months of availability. While that might sound impressive, relatively speaking, it fared poorly against the Samsung Galaxy S4 who outsold it by a whopping four times. We are talking about 20 million sold units within the same time window, at least according to recently published data.

Bloomberg has gotten hold of sales statistics concerning the 2013 flagships from Samsung and HTC respectively, and if you were to take Apple’s iPhone 5 in comparison, that handset did pretty well for itself too, at least better than the HTC One (M7) – selling a whopping 5 million units within the first five days of availability.

It does seem as though Samsung is king when it comes to high end Android-powered devices, which is not surprising at all considering the marketing budget of the South Korean conglomerate. Well, with the Samsung Galaxy S5 edging out the Galaxy S4 for its launch day sales figures, it would be interesting to find out some time down the road the total sales of the Galaxy S5 within the first fortnight.

To mark the 45th anniversary of Samsung Electronics, the Korean juggernaut today opened Samsung Innovation Museum in Suwon, South Korea. This five story, 10,950 square meter building in located inside the Samsung Digital City in Suwon. Kwon Oh-hyun, Samsung CEO, said at the opening event that this museum gives visitors an opportunity to see how far technology has come and from where Samsung draws inspiration for future products.

One might think that this museum would be a shrine to everything-Samsung, but that is actually not the case. On display are 150 inventions and products from individuals as well as competing companies like Apple, apart from Samsung’s own products.

The museum has been divided into three main halls with each representing a different “Age.” The Age of Inventors includes inventions that laid the foundations of modern technology, from individuals like Thomas Edison, Michael Faraday and Alexander Graham Bell. Hall 2 is called Age of Industry Innovation. This features inventions related to semiconductors, mobile telecommunications and displays. Some of the world’s earliest smartphones are also on display though Samsung has naturally gone to great lengths to ensure that its mobile products take center stage. Similar products from Sony, Sharp, Nokia and Motorola are also on display. Age of Creation is highlighted in the last hall, here the focus is greatly upon Samsung’s latest devices and services.

A Samsung History Hall has also been created to showcase the journey and challenges that the company has faced up till now. The museum is open to public from Monday to Saturday, though visitors stopping by during weekdays will require a reservation.

It does seem that the upcoming Nexus 8 will not see Asus as the manufacturer, but rather, there are whispers going around touting that beleaguered firm HTC will be the one behind the Nexus 8. According to DigiTimes, “upstream supply chain” sources have begun to see evidence of HTC working on the Nexus 8. The Nexus 8 is widely believed to be an 8.9-inch tablet which has been bandied about before, and it also appears as though Google had plans for HTC to come up with the original Nexus 7 prior to contacting Asus, but HTC did not have the time to dedicate to such an endeavor.

Who would have thought that HTC’s share price would have plummeted so in the months since then? Perhaps that was not the brightest of choices made by the Taiwanese company. There were a couple of Nexus 7 tablets that rolled out in the summer right after the Google I/O conference, and it seems that the upcoming Nexus 8, too, will follow in such a similar direction.

In fact, the very same supply chain sources that were mentioned earlier claimed that Google is targeting a Q3 release for the Nexus 8. Are you excited at what the Nexus 8 will offer, and will it come with an Intel processor? Only time will reveal all.
