Why Locating 911 Calls Is So Hard—And How To Make It Better

You’ve heard the cautionary tales about dialing 911 on your cell phone. A call about missing children in Illinois gets routed to Canada. A stroke victim in New York is only located after a grueling eight-hour search. Locating 911 calls in 2014 is a byzantine process that involves generating a fake phone number—but a Next Generation 911 system that integrates text and video is in the (somewhat) near future, if we can only can get our collective shit together.

Meet The Reversible USB Cable, Coming This Summer

Before Apple’s Lightning cable, I never even dreamed of a life where input/output cables could be reversible. Now, however, it’s hard to go back to standard and micro USB, because I got so lazy. Soon enough, however, USB is getting a new reversible standard called “Type-C” which is around the size of microUSB, and which replaces USB 3 cables entirely, on both sides. We now… Read More

Some of L.A.'s Most Beautiful Landscapes Are Its Freeways

Some of L.A.'s Most Beautiful Landscapes Are Its Freeways

The vast and looping knots of L.A.’s elaborate freeway system have long inspired an unlikely stew made from equal parts road rage, suffocating air pollution, and an unexpected aesthetic appreciation for their stacked coils and crisp lines. A drivable geometry textbook, the freeways are perhaps the city’s real monuments, Stonehenge-like megastructures that novelist J.G. Ballard would call "motion sculptures in space," abstract works of automotive art too easy to miss for all the oil stains and honking.

Withings debuts their new Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor

withings-wireless-bpmWhen we talk about a blood pressure monitor, most of the time, we would think along the lines of wrapping your arm around that cushion thingy before manually pumping air or press a button and let a more modern, digital version get the job done. Withings intends to spice things up in this particular department by extending their vision of user-friendly connected health another step through the introduction of the new Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor.

Hypertension is said to affect up to 25% of the world’s population, which is a pretty high statistic. What is scarier would be this – 50% of those happen to be unaware about the severity of their condition, and hopefully, with Withings’ new Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor, it might be able to cause ordinary joes like you and I to actually make the effort to check on our respective blood pressure readings in the comfort of our homes. After all, if it is wireless, all the better, considering how the world has moved on to wireless connectivity in many aspects.

Withings’ Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor does feature an award-winning sleek design, although it is not just a pretty face since it comes with Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity as well as Android compatibility. Taking measurements with the Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor is a no-brainer – just wrap the cuff around your arm and turn on the device.

It will then hook up to a smartphone via Bluetooth automatically, booting up the Withings Health Mate application. Once you tap on the start button within the application, the cuff will inflate, where it starts to take down your systolic and diastolic blood pressure in addition to your heart rate. Results will be shown and saved on your device, while setting reminders so that you can keep track of your blood pressure regularly. The asking price for the Withings Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor stands at $129.95 each.

It’s Deep Space Nine O’ Clock

If this clock looks familiar it’s because it’s a sculpture of Star Trek’s Deep Space Nine. It is called the “Starfleet Machine” and it is breathtaking. It was created by Swiss watch designer L’Epée, with microengineering from the lab MB&F.

It has a lot of the same mechanisms as a wristwatch, just larger in scale. Its custom-made movement has a 40-day power reserve and a series of five mainspring barrels. The clock shows hours and minutes, double retrograde seconds and has a power reserve indicator. I wonder if it has any unique Quarks. Or Roms even.

This thing looks super amazing. Shut up and take my gold-pressed latinum!
