How the Aeropress Was Born
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you’ve ever used an Aeropress, you’ll know that they’re a wonderful example of good design: simple, easy to use, nice-looking—oh, and they make killer coffee, too. This is how the device came to be.
If you asked the average American what they think about the coming crop of technologies, you’d probably get some generic optimism. According to a recent Pew Research survey found that 59 percent of Americans expected that technology would make our…
Some people take Where’s Waldo incredibly seriously—and then there’s the U.S. intelligence services. It’s all harmless fun until someone’s finger slips on the Dispatch Drone button. [XKCD]
The future of interactive user interfaces might be here already, assuming you are into cool looking 3D holograms that tend to be featured in sci-fi movies and TV shows. Microsoft Research has shown off a new project known as Holograph recently, where it was put through the paces, rendering large amounts of data, and not only in 3D, but also in a manner where it resembles as though it is being projected above a display.
Holograph’s team leader Curtis Wong shared on how this particular project is able to deliver a way to create visuals with data that is put within, such as Excel. Wong continued, “That enables anybody with any kind of data, like location or time, to easily plot that data onto a map or globe. If you select ‘date,’ and you have date or time information, you’ll be able to watch that data play out over time.”
Holograph will surely do its bit to make real the dreams of sci-fi fans, including the famous Princess Leia hologram in “Star Wars” where she was projected by R2-D2, saying, “You’re my only hope.” Perhaps a game of 3D battleships or 3D chess might be able to make traditional games all the more popular. I guess you can say that it would be a whole lot more disastrous in terms of productivity if an app, or a suite of apps such as Microsoft Office were to be crippled in a day, as opposed to say, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook going down for a while. The latter three would be an inconvenience though, that’s for sure. Well, Microsoft’s Office platform has long been the cornerstone of productivity in the enterprise and classroom environments, being made available on the iPad recently, but it seems that there is a new Office Mix in the works that will target the classroom.
Most of us would not be familiar with what mix.office.com is all about, but it so happens to be a brand new service which will be able to transform PowerPoint presentations into interactive, online lessons, allowing you to share those with just about anyone and everyone. This would be a novel method for educators to distribute and interact with their presentations
MIX would also enable one to transform PowerPoints into interactive online lessons as well as presentations, helping get rid of boredom in the classroom. There is an add-on which is installed that lets you record audio, video, and handwriting, as well as being able to insert interactive elements such as quizzes and CK12 exercises. Apart from that, there is also a screen capture tool that allows you to record anything you would like on your computer. When done, click “Create MIX”, and some XML mix will turn it into an interactive document that is complete with analytics. You can sign up for the preview here.

Square Enix has had quite a fair number of single player RPGs in the past that were epics, and out of sheer necessity at that point in time simply because the infrastructure back then did not really manage to support multiplayer RPGs in the same way that we know of today. Having said that, some of those titles happen to be classics today, such as Final Fantasy III. In fact, it has been almost too long since we have seen Square Enix show a remote amount of interest in delivering single-player RPGs to the PC platform. Apparently, the German ratings board has just published its grade for the PC port of Final Fantasy III, which means that there is a very real possibility of this once rare RPG (as it has already been released on other handheld platforms such as the Nintendo DS, iOS devices and Sony PSP) appear on Steam alongside the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII.
Final Fantasy III happened to be the first title in the series that actually defined ‘jobs’ in the game properly, where thieves could use “Steal” while Dragoons started to make use of “Jump”. The main characters comprise of a quartet of orphans, and with a PC release, hopefully they will gain some named recognition.
Do bear in mind this remains a rumor until mentioned otherwise via an official statement or press release by the folks over at Square Enix. Still, it is nice to be able to dream, isn’t it?

Bentley Hybrid Car Set To Wow
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt goes without saying that there is a fast growing group of nouveau riche over in China, and luxury car maker Bentley is not going to let this opportunity pass them by. No sir, they have underlined the importance of the Chinese market by using the Beijing motor show as its vehicle (pardon the pun) to unveil its very first attempt at a hybrid concept car, not to mention using this opportunity to debut another three more models.
This hybrid ride will be based on Bentley’s £225,000 flagship Mulsanne model, where the hybrid system makes use of both petrol and electric power, allowing you to plug into its mains in order to juice up your ride whenever it starts to run low on juice. The manufacturer touts that the system will be able to increase the car’s power output by 25%, while cutting emissions by 70%, in addition to letting you get around on this vehicle for 30 miles before its batteries run well and truly flat.
Ricky Tay, Bentley’s China managing director, shared, “China has always been a key market for Bentley and, after a remarkable year in 2013, we have seen an impressive start to 2014 with a 19pc increase in sales in the first quarter. Our customer base is growing and we are expanding our dealer network to offer our ultra luxury products and a unique brand experience throughout the region.”
