The AeroPress is a deceptively simple device — it’s basically a coffee syringe. The quick-brewing coffee maker sits somewhere between an espresso machine and a French press. You pour hot water over your grounds then force the water through them with…
Fledgling smartphone company OnePlus is about to show its cards in around two days and it has managed to build up enough hype around its first smartphone to have an … Continue reading
Before arriving at the Samsung Innovation Museum, I had an idea of what to expect: the Korean company shoehorning itself into every technological milestone, whether it deserved to or not. Fortunately, that wasn’t completely the case — and there’s…
We did bring you word earlier today that there were layoffs which happened at Nike’s FuelBand unit, although Nike has since reassured customers and potential shoppers that their FuelBand device is not going to go away anytime soon. Well, it seems that the adage of “one man’s loss is another man’s gain” rings true, as there are now rumors of these dumped FuelBand staff jumping over to Apple to work on Cupertino’s much hinted iWatch, where a conceptual idea of it can be seen above.
Apparently, Nike’s alleged close relationship with Apple (Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, does sit on Nike’s board after all) has been used as a launch pad for whispers of both companies joining powers to churn out a wearable computing device. Perhaps it is time that the world guns for a new piece of technology to ogle over, first with the smartphone, then the tablet, and a watch might be next although initial efforts by the likes of Samsung have not really taken off in a big way. Perhaps Apple might be able to lead the way, just like how they did with the smartphone and portable media player?
After all, Tim Cook did mentioned before that Apple will soon enter a “new category”, and that ought to have shed more detail in hindsight eventually.

Facebook Paper App For iOS Updated
Posted in: Today's ChiliFacebook has just announced a major update to its iOS app, where it claims that there are new features thrown into the mix, including the likes of new story buttons, notifications, and photo comments, among others. Facebook’s Paper App was first introduced to the world at the end of January before it hit the iOS platform in the next month. After 2 months of use, Facebook Paper has “grown up” to arrive at version 1.1.
Facebook Paper 1.1 is an upgrade that will enable users to access specifically woven social content in a cleaner and less cluttered environment. The features club would be on the receiving end of new additions such as birthdays and events notifications. Birthday and event news are now embedded in the globe icon located on the top of the Facebook page, instead of being part of the news feed.
Apart from that, photo comments too, have been thrown into the mix, where users are able to attach a photo to the comment thread of a post. This feature happens to be rather popular with the web version, and according to Michael Reckhow, product manager for Facebook, “Photo comments are something we added to Facebook not too long ago, and we found that it’s now something people can’t live without.”
How do you find your updated Facebook Paper experience on iOS been?

Forget about the audio visualizers that your eyes have seen during the days of Winamp – those were pretty trippy, but I would say that none were able to hold a candle (pun not intended) to the Rubens’ Tube Pyro Board that you can see in action for yourself in the video above. This two-dimensional Pyro Board depicts the unique standing wave patterns of sound within the box, where it is made possible thanks to the pressure variations created by the sound waves that affect the flow rate of flammable gas from the holes in the Pyro Board. This in turn would also see changes made to the height and color of flames. The Pyro Board itself is a 2D plane that comprises of 2,500 Bunsen burners.
One thing is for sure – if you were to have this in your home the next time you want to host a party, then you would not be able to go wrong with it. After all, it is guaranteed to wow anyone who sees it, especially when you have some pretty heavy hitting music. Just be careful not to barbecue stuff on it, simply because the flames are not going to be as controlled as you would like, so your skewers of meat might be overdone or undercooked, depending on the soundtrack that is being played at that moment.

Sony Patents Self-Washing Robot
Posted in: Today's ChiliI would suppose that Sony’s most famous robot release would be their beloved Aibo, which happens to be a robotic pooch that was the bomb back in the day, although the $1,900 price tag back then would make any potential customer think more than just twice as to whether to splurge that kind of money on what is essentially an expensive toy. I think that even when we factor in inflation today, $1,900 can still do plenty for the average man on the street who is more interested in bread and butter issues. Well, it seems that Sony is not quite out of the robotics scene just yet, having filed for a patent that will focus on a camera lens that could be used in a robot hand.
So far, it remains rather tricky to determine as to how this particular patent is going to be implemented, although the patent filing was accompanied by images of a few robots, where one of them can be seen above. It looks like NEC’s PaPeRo from certain angles, and the idea put forward by Sony seems to point to this robot being able to wash itself whenever it becomes dirty, allowing it to maintain itself while helping humans out in everyday chores.
Sounds convenient, no? This patent sees Sony crossing their fingers that such a robot can clean its sensitive camera eyes alone, and know just when it is due for a cleaning. This is made possible by comparing images snapped across time to figure out whether there is grit and grease building up. I do wonder whether the Transformers have such inclinations…
