Windows 8.1 With Bing Announced

Windows 8.1 With Bing AnnouncedThe folks over at Microsoft have confirmed rumors which swirled around concerning a new version of Windows 8.1. In fact, the latest SKU is known as Windows 8.1 with Bing, where it will be aligned more towards OEMs so that they will be able to churn out more affordable Windows-powered devices which in turn, will benefit the end user, especially those who want to jump aboard the Windows platform but are unable to do so because of the high cost of entry.

The new SKU will, of course, see Bing thrust into the big picture as the default search engine whenever you use Internet Explorer, but fret not – there is the usual option for the consumer to change that default into something that you identify with more and would use a whole lot more often. Come to think of it, most folks would automatically go for Google if I am not mistaken, but perhaps some others might prefer Bing. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

It is also said that OEMs have already begun to work on devices that run on Windows 8.1 with Bing, and consumers ought to prepare ourselves to tune in to an official announcement that is set to happen over the course of the coming weeks. [Press Release]

Purchase Donuts Using Your Smartphone

Purchase Donuts Using Your SmartphoneIf Homer Simpson had a smartphone with him and actually figured out how to use one, then chances are he would definitely love to hang out at Tim Hortons, as this particular establishment now allows you to purchase donuts without having to fumble around with real paper currency or perhaps take out your plastic for a swipe. This is because Tim Hortons has now jumped aboard the “payment via smartphone” bandwagon, enabling mobile payment options for the masses using iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices.

Not all Tim Hortons outlets will offer such a hassle free payment facility, of course, since only a select few locations will kick start this particular initiative. After all, it needs to be tested out beforehand to make sure that everything runs nice and smooth before it can be implemented across the board, right? That would make perfect sense.

The handset-driven payments will happen over a NFC connection, and for iPhone users, you also have the ability to add Tim Hortons to Passbook for easier access whenever the situation calls for it. There will also be other useful add-ons including restaurant locator, being able to reload funds, and accessing nutritional information among others. It would be cool if one could perform pre-orders as well prior to dropping in ala Starbucks.

LG G3 Design “Makes You Forget” Its 5.5” Size: LG Teaser Video

LG Korea has posted a new LG G3 teaser a few hours ago, which points out that LG intends to come out with a large display form-factor that won’t feel like a regular “phablet”. Looking back at the 5.2” LG G2 and at the various leaks that have been coming out, it’s believable. As I pointed out in my own review of the G2, it did feel very much like a 4.9”-5.0” Smartphone when using it on a daily basis.

So far, the leaked G3 photos hint at a clean design with a thin bezel and what looks like a reduced display frame space at the top and the bottom. What’s out there supports the overall idea that it will most likely be the 5.5” Smartphone with a perceived smaller size.

Based on the G3 leaked specifications that we previously published, the LG G3’s dimensions are 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9mm. Compare that to another famous 5.5” phone like the Galaxy Note 3 which is 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3mm big. For reference, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is 142 x 72.5 x 8.1mm.

Note 3 (in mm)151.279.28.3
G3146.274.68.9
S514272.58.1

From those numbers, it looks like it has chosen to reduce the phone’s width and height, but made it 0.6mm thicker to provide nearly the same internal volume as the Galaxy Note 3. This may be a good choice because we’ve seen in the past that phones that are super-thin like the Motorola RAZR leave a space between the phone and the palm of the hand that could be exploited to augment the interval volume of the phone, while making it more “comfortable” to hold at the same time.

As we’re nearing the LG G3 launch date, more details are coming out, and between the 4K Display, the new “metal” industrial design and what seems to be a smaller footprint form-factor, LG is getting ready up for a great launch. In less than two years, the LG Mobile team has consistently pushed the envelope and made one of the most remarkable comeback in Smartphone history. Spotted in the UK, the LG G3 has already gone through the FCC, so brace for the U.S version.

Skype Tests Out New Windows Desktop & Mac Experiences

Skype Tests Out New Windows Desktop & Mac ExperiencesThe folks over at Microsoft, who happen to own Skype just in case you were hiding under a rock for the past three years, has just announced that they have kicked off a new round of testing for a new user interface when it comes to the Windows desktop as well as Mac Skype desktop clients. In fact, the Skype team had been hard at work for close to a year and half, developing various new interfaces for the Windows 8, iOS and Android versions. Considering their work for this season has come to an end, it is time to pay more attention to the desktop clients and see if there is anything else which can be improved.

A small segment of Windows desktop users would have undergone this particular “feeler” session already, and in due time, a handful of Skype for Mac users, too, will be able to enjoy such an experience. The brand new user interface intends to deliver a clean and modern look to Skype, where one will be able to enjoy a more delightful and coherent experience regardless of the Skype client eventually. Microsoft will take into consideration the various test results and feedback received, ensuring that at the end, more fine tuning will be able to deliver a polished product that sits down well with everyone. Nintendo 2DS Gets Sea Green Color

Nintendo 2DS Gets Sea Green ColorWhen it comes to rolling out a particular product in many different colors as well as livery, you can more or less say that Nintendo is an old hand at such a particular strategy. The even stranger thing is, many people tend to fall for it over and over again. Those of you who happen to own a Nintendo DS Lite – surely you have been tempted at one point or another to actually purchase another DS Lite simply because it comes in a different color, or in a special Pokemon design? Well, the Nintendo 2DS model too, is touted to be on the receiving end of a Sea Green shade this coming June 6th, 2014.

The asking price for the Sea Green Nintendo 2DS when June 6th rolls around would stand at $129.99 a pop, where this handheld console will feature a white front as well as back with sea green accents splashed all over the directional pad, face buttons and stylus. It would mean that the red and blue Nintendo 2DS handheld consoles would now have a third color to join their ranks.

Nothing groundbreaking here, and I do not think that a new color (or even 5 more new colors) will be able to save the Nintendo 2DS from its mediocre existence. [Press Release]

Smart Solar House To Undergo Testing

Smart Solar House To Undergo TestingIn this day and age, there are many kinds of “smart” items out there, ranging from smart cars to smartphones and perhaps in the near future, smart houses. Having said that, Sekisui House Ltd, Toshiba Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd have announced that all three have collaborated in order to work on a house that actually takes into consideration as to what life is like down the road – or 2020 to be exact.

To build something that is not quite available just yet can prove to be quite a challenge, but this has not stopped such a co-operative move. Different kind of technologies were used, where among these include information technology, personal transportation vehicles and an energy management technology which is capable of controlling energy supply and demand for households, vehicles and the neighborhood in a comprehensive manner.

This unique home will be able to fit in two families, where it will offer a mutual supply of electricity and hot water among others between households. Not only that, there will also be a wireless charging system for electric vehicles built into the mix in order to live up to its billing of being a smart house of the future.
