Hasta La Gadget!

As the god of gods, Zeus has a tremendous list of assets at his disposal. A 3D printer that can also scan and transmit objects, however, has until now been out of reach. AIO Robotics is gearing up to introduce the Zeus of the modern world, an all-in-one machine that duplicates 3D objects, even when they’re not nearby. The device, which will make its Kickstarter debut on September 4th, will function in much the same way as a traditional all-in-one printer, with the obvious advantage of being able to create three-dimensional objects. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the creators expect Zeus to cost less than a Makerbot Replicator and Digitizer combo. It’s also forecasted to be “the most reliable and usable 3D printer so far,” according to a RepRap forum post. Time will tell.

Remember that holographic illusion of 2Pac? It actually wasn’t a hologram, but  it was done using projectors and an angled surface with both reflective and transparent properties. Now you can recreate this illusion in miniature, using nothing more than your tablet, and an inexpensive device called the i-Lusio.

Set your iPad or other similarly sized tablet into the top of the i-Lusio, then install the companion app, and you can view simulated 3-dimensional objects that look like they’re floating in space. It’s a pretty cool illusion, though it’s probably best used for things like store displays and museum exhibits. I’m not sure how useful this thing would be at home – though kids might get a kick out of it for a little while.

The i-Lusio is currently available for pre-order via an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. A pledge of at least $44(USD) will get you one of your own – including the app and one download – which makes it sound like there will be a charge for downloadable content once the app is available.

Nobody can accuse Oscar-winning director Ang Lee of being stuck in a box, having gone from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to Hulk to Life of Pi. According to Deadline Hollywood, he’ll next tackle a boxing film that looks at the 1960s and ’70s golden age or prizefighting, with such rivalries as Ali-Frazier and Hearns-Duran. Intriguingly, he intends to give us an intimate peek into that world by filming it in 3D, presumably using Life of Pi‘s Cameron Pace Fusion 3D technology. Other story and technical details have yet to come out, but given the filmmaker’s love of complex themes and the epic clashes of the era, he’s got our attention.
