All the Best Stuff from a Mildly Horrible CES Press Event

For better or worse, CES Unveiled is a thing. We actually find it terribly convenient—dozens of gadgetmakers under one roof. And we found some cool stuff too. Huzzah! We braved the throngs and fried-food-vapors for you, my dears. Here’s the best stuff we saw: More »

LG’s New 84-Inch 4K 3D TV: Eyegasm

We just got to spend a little time gazing on LG’s new 84LM9600. It’s 84-inches and packs in 3840×2160 pixels for 4K resolution. Locally dimmed LED backlighting keeps balances brightness without light bleeding in from the sides. And it’s 3D. But whatever about the specs, how does it look? More »

Disney announces Wreck-It Ralph will arrive for download before DVD, Blu-ray

Disney announces WreckIt Ralph will arrive for download before DVD, Bluray

Following the lead of other studios like Fox with its Digital HD push, Disney has announced its first movie that customers will be able to buy on download and streaming services weeks before the disc is released. Wreck-It Ralph is a worldwide hit, bringing in $277 million and counting at the box office, but the first time you’ll be able to snag it (legally) for home viewing in the US is February 12th in HD and 3D on supported services. The four disc Blu-ray 3D combo set is priced at $39.99 and will ship nearly a month later on March 5th, along with the 2-disc Blu-ray ($31.99), DVD and standard def video on-demand versions. Disney hasn’t tipped its hat about any digital efforts itself to replace the Online streaming site it shut down in November, but clearly it’s preparing for a multi-format future — we’ll see if we hear any more interesting details during CES in the coming week.

Samsung announces 3D-capable NX300 mirrorless camera

Samsung doesn’t just have smartphones and televisions in its repertoire. The company just unveiled its new NX300 mirrorless camera, and it claims it has the fastest autofocus system of any camera. The new NX300 doesn’t come with Android on board like the Galaxy Camera, but this 20.3 MP APS-C camera is the company’s new flagship mirrorless model.

avXveX2Y0S28_xVEoe1DG_tHxvurNuxFU9SZRxE8v2c

The NX300 replaces the NX210, and other than the 20.3 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, there’s a 3.31-inch AMOLED touch display, and it can shoot 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second, as well as taking up to 8.6 shots per second in burst mode. There’s also an ISO range of 100 to 25600, and a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000th of a second.

While the NX300 doesn’t have an Android OS (like other NX-series cameras), it does have built-in dual-band WiFi, and an accompanying Android and iOS app will allow users to connect their smartphone via WiFi to the NX300 and instantly upload photos and video to the web, and can even use the smartphone as a remote viewfinder for the camera.

The NX300 is slated to cost $750 with a 20-50mm kits lens and a copy of Adobe Lightroom, while the 2D/3D lens will set you back $600. You’ll also get your pick in either black or white when the camera eventually releases this March. The new camera is certainly priced competitively, so we don’t think Samsung will have a problem selling these things.

Samsung unveils 3D-capable NX300 mirrorless camera and 45mm f/1.8 2D/3D lens ahead of CES (eyes-on)

Samsung unveils 3Dcapable NX300 mirrorless camera and 45mm f18 2D3D lens eyeson

TVs and robotic vacuums aren’t the only Smart-branded devices Samsung will be showing off at this year’s CES. We just met with the company here in NYC to take a look at its newest entrant into the camera game, dubbed the NX300. No, it’s not Android-equipped, but this 20.3-megapixel APS-C shooter stands as its new flagship mirrorless model, boasting a key gimmick feature of 3D capability for stills and videos (up to 1080p at 60fps) thanks to a new DRIMe IV processor.

Getting the usual numbers aside, you’ll be able to harness an ISO range of 100 to 25600, a maximum shutter speed of 1,6000 and a top speed of 8.6fps for JPG bursts. On back, you’ll find a 3.31-inch, 768 dot AMOLED touch-display, and a d-pad-esque section with five buttons for manual control. Lastly, there’s a dedicated mode dial on the top, along with a full-size hot shoe mount. This shooter is also WiFi-enabled like previous cameras in the range, allowing you to share content wirelessly and giving you access to apps, like a remote viewfinder that works with iOS and Android devices.

Having a new NX that can handle 3D naturally calls for a lens that can shoot it, and a 2D/3D-capable f/1.8 45mm lens was also shown to us — a “world-first,” according to Sammy. While you won’t be able to shoot in 3D with older NX cameras (we’re told they don’t have the processing power), it’ll still work as regular 2D lens if you’re interested in its focal perspective. We spent a few fleeting moments with an engineering sample of the camera in-hand, so join us past the break for more.

The Samsung NX300’s a big revamp of last year’s NX210 including a lot of common sense improvements to Samsung’s mid-range mirrorless camera. And then there’s the 3D photo and movie mode. 3D Paintings Exhibited In China

3d photo gallery 3D Paintings Exhibited In ChinaI am quite sure that many of us had our minds blown away visually with the rich world found in Avatar, especially while watching the movie in 3D when it was first released a few years ago. Well, many movies have since jumped aboard the 3D bandwagon, but none really made a mark and had such a resonance in the industry than James Cameron’s outing. The whole idea of 3D viewing has also caught on in art exhibitions, where you can drop by Tianjin in China and have Mona Lisa reach out to touch you. Yes sir, how about having a Renaissance masterpiece be more interactive instead?

There is a slew of famous works of art as well as new additions to the art world which have been brought to life via an exhibit of 3D paintings that are currently on parade over at a shopping mall in Tianjin, where patrons will have their fair share of laughs as well as fun photo opportunities. If you drop by the Magic Art Special Exhibition at the Hangzhou Peace International Exhibition and Conference Center, there will be additional 3D paintings there, and you are in fact encouraged to interact with the works of art.

LG adding more games to its Cinema 3D Smart TVs in 2013

LG

You may wince at the idea of your TV supplanting your games console, but LG’s seen enough potential in the idea to swell the number of titles available for its Cinema 3D units. It’ll add The Sims Free Play, Air Penguin and Mini Motor Racing (amongst others) that you can control with the Magic Remote. The latter has also been tweaked to offer three-dimensional gaming, and, thanks to the company’s FPR 3D tech, two players can battle each other without having to glare at a split screen. The only downside to the announcement is that we won’t see ’em arrive until the first quarter of 2013, because LG are naughty teases.
