Your iPhone could be getting some serious new capabilities soon, following the news that Apple has acquired the 3D-sensing technology company PrimeSense. This is the same Israeli company that built the original Microsoft Kinect sensor. But that doesn’t mean Apple’s planning an Xbox competitor anytime soon.

When I decided to get an iPad instead of a Kindle to read my books, it opened up new realms of possibilities. The iPad is the first computer I switch on during the day, and the last to be switched off. There are lots of nifty things you can use the iPad for, and soon you’ll be able to use it as a 3D object scanner.
The Structure Sensor is made to fit onto the back of your iPad, thanks to a bracket that mounts above the rear-facing camera. It connects via a Lightning cable, and can connect to other devices thanks to USB connectivity.
The sensor and your iPad’s onboard capabilities allow this combination to measure the 3D space in any room, automatically capture 3D models of objects, and stimulate physics. You can also use the SDK to develop your own iOS apps for the device.
To use the sensor, simply walk around the object you want to scan, and its software will automatically stitch together a 3D model. Walk around it again to capture full color texture maps. The app also supports the ability to send 3D objects to Shapeways for printing.
The Structure Sensor is available for pre-order for $349(USD), and is expected to start shipping in April 2014.

A few years ago we saw a View-Master that was upgraded with digital picture frame displays. Alec Smecher took the classic toy to the next logical progression. He bought a very old model of the View-Master and installed a pair of 0.9″ 96 x 64 OLED displays, a Raspberry Pi and a laptop CD-ROM drive on it. After a lot of hacking and programming, he was able to make it play 3D video.
All of the electronics fit on the View-Master because this particular model has an attachment for a light bulb and two D batteries so that the toy could be used in low light. The Mini-CD actually sticks out of the top of the View-Master as it spins, a nod to the cardboard reels used with the toy. Alec also made the smallest possible modification to the case of the View-Master so that he could still restore it to its original state if he wanted to.
Alec says that his hack isn’t 100% done yet but as you saw in the video it does work. Check out Alec’s website for more details on his hack. I bet a lot of people would like it if Oculus VR released a View-Master case for the Rift.
