3D-Printed Nails Are Way Crazier Than Your Typical Press-Ons

3D-Printed Nails Are Way Crazier Than Your Typical Press-Ons

Man, I really love nail art. You might not share the same kind of enthusiasm for crazy custom manicures, but we can all agree that the Laser Girls’ 3D-printed nails are decidedly cooler than your average press-on acrylics.

These Intricate Collars Look Like Fish Bones, Are Actually 3D-Printed

These complex collars look like like they’re made from freaky shark jaws or the skeleton of some crazy underwater menace, but they were actually borne directly from a 3D printer. MadLab designer Madeline Gannon did start with an aquatic inspiration, though—the virtual movement of a digital squid.

These Blossoming Flowers Are the First Inflatable 3D-Printed Object

Most objects created by 3D printers are made from hard rigid plastics, but as the hardware is continually being improved, new materials are coming into play. Believe it or not, at Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design, Richard Clarkson has succeeded in 3D printing these flowers from a soft rubber-like material that can actually be inflated.

Polish 3D Printer Zortrax Sells 5,000 Units To Dell

2014-01-10_rafal_02

It may seem like small potatoes, but Polish 3D printer manufacturer Zortrax has chalked a 5,000 unit order from Dell. This is the first I’ve heard of a mass order of home 3D-printing equipment and it means a real boon for the budding Olsztyn-based company.

“Dell kept in touch with us when we were still in the middle of our Kickstarter campaign. We weren’t in a position to make them a reasonable business offer at that time, since our production volume was very limited,” said Rafał Tomasiak, Zortrax CEO. “At that point in time the production was very tedious, every single printer was quality checked and tested by us. Business negotiations with Dell were stalled at some point and we focused on shipping the printers to our Kickstarter backers. Now the situation is much different, we are prepared for large quantity orders.”

Zortrax launched last May and is now shipping to happy Kickstarter backers. I’ve used the printer multiple times and was very impressed by the print quality and build. The company is poised to be a major player in the European market and, with this investment by Dell, potentially globally. The company said the the printers are headed toward Dell’s central and east Asia offices.

“Frankly speaking, we were surprised that any company, even a company like Dell, wants to place such an order! But after a while we realized how many printers we use in our own office… For a designer who prints a large number of prototypes it is much more useful to use 10 smaller printers on one desk, which operate simultaneously, rather than one with a larger build volume,” said Tomasiak.

Team Fortress 2 Sentry Gun Miniature: Ain’t That a Cute Little Gun?

Valve has a life-size model of the Sentry Gun from Team Fortress 2 to guard their office. Programmer and 3D artist Jeff Wong may not be a big shot like Gabe Newell and his employees, but he has a turret manning his house too. You just have to look closely to see it.

You Can Now Buy a Life-Size, 3D-Printed Replica of Your Unborn Fetus

"Imagine holding your baby before he or she is born." It might sound like a morbid thought (if not a shitty horror flick catchphrase), but the idea behind the line is actually pretty sentimental. Of course, that’s assuming you’d call 3D printing a life-size replica of your unborn fetus sentimental.

Hershey’s and 3DSystems to Offer 3D Printers for Chocolate

Chocolate. It may arguably be better than bacon. And today we have some important chocolate news. Hershey has just announced a partnership with 3DSystems to produce a 3D printer that prints in chocolate. Imagine chocolate shaped like anything, maybe even with a hollow caramel maze inside or something.

This isn’t 3DSystems first foray into printing candy – they showed off some amazing printers that could output both sugar and chocolate candy models at the recent 2014 CES:

We don’t know when they will have their new Willy Wonka device ready or how much it might cost, but the ChefJet will sell for less than $5,000 and the ChefJet will go for less than $10,000. No word on the Hershey’s version though. You guys just feel free to throw everything you have at this project. Humanity is counting on you.

I can’t wait for finely detailed chocolate Star Trek starships to start rolling out of this machine. The possibilities are endless.

Giant 3D Printer Can Print A House In 24 Hours

Giant 3D Printer Can Print A House In 24 Hours3D printers have their uses. They are able to print all sorts of small-ish objects, ranging from toy dragons to even bones which are used medically, but wouldn’t it be cool if 3D printers could print something a lot bigger, say a house, for example? If you think that’s impossible, think again because the folks at the University of Southern California have designed a giant robot that is able to 3D print a house! In fact it works so fast that a 232sqm home can be actually built and finished in 24 hours! Dubbed Contour Crafting, the robot was the brainchild of Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis who calls it, “basically scaling up 3D printing to the scale of building,”

The printer will rely on being positioned on two tracks and will be able to work in both the X and Y axis once it has been calibrated. Now we’re sure some are wondering how might this affect the jobs of construction workers? Well undoubtedly there will be some side-effects to this, but according to Khoshnevis, “the reality is that a lot of new jobs can be created in this sector as well (from it).” In fact this technology might not necessarily have to be limited to just the Earth, but could also be sent into space where the technology might then be able to help create habitats on other planets. Now that would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it?
