Hasta La Gadget!

Back in July, word got out that Huawei was prepping a revised version of its entry-level Android tablet, dubbed the MediaPad 7 Lite. As that name implies, this Android ICS tab’s of the 7-inch variety and, thus, lends itself well to one-handed use for busy on-the-go types. Considering this isn’t part of the outfit’s top shelf portfolio, its mix of specs have been kept quite modest: there’s a single-core 1.2GHz Cortex A8 CPU underneath that 1,024 x 600 IPS display. But before you knock it for falling short of even 720p territory, bear in mind this device’s being marked at a 229 Euro price point — so it’s affordable and geared squarely for the budget segment.

Loaded up with a mostly stock version of Android 4.0.3 and global radios for 3G / WiFi, this humble tab’s made for mobile use, as the OEM’s VP of Euro operations assured us repeatedly. Performance-wise, its lack of a dual-core setup is heavily apparent, since there was a considerable lag between our touch input and onscreen effect. The tab also sports 8GB of internal storage, a rear 3.2-megapixel camera and VGA front facer — helpful if you’re out and about and want to video chat — in addition to a 4,100mAh battery.

As for the MediaPad 7 Lite’s build, well, it’s a bit disappointing especially given the attractive design of the Nexus 7 which is comparably priced and higher specced. In all, it feels rather chunky in-hand, but it does feature a metallic back bordered by solid white plastic. It’s set to be released this August in South Africa, China, Russia, Philippines and Taiwan, followed by Germany in October for 249 Euros. Despite being the world second Android based camera, Sorry Samsung but Nikon bit you to it, the GALAXY Camera still win our heart! Indeed, unlike the Coolpix S800c, the GALAXY Camera runs on Android 4.1 instead of Android 2.3.3 the actual Android flavored installed on the Coolpix S800c. Is this the only difference? Hell No! The Galaxy Camera is in fact the real fusion between a Smartphone and a Camera and will be available in 3G + WiFi or 4G LTE + WiFi and will come with a nice 4.8″ 720p …

During a visit to Samsung’s headquarters in Korea earlier this year, we had a chance to talk shop with company execs. The electronics maker’s existing mirrorless and point-and-shoot lineups were the primary topic of discussion, but we did catch wind of a Galaxy product possibly to come, from the camera division. A Galaxy camera? That could only mean Android, and a heavy heaping of touch and connectivity. At the time, reps admitted only that they were “considering” such a device, and declined to provide any hint as to design or functionality. And we haven’t heard a further peep, until today. As you may have gathered from recent rumors, Samsung’s Galaxy Note II is not the only product to be Unpacked this afternoon. Sure enough, the anticipated Galaxy Camera is also on order, and we have all the juicy details just past the break.

I am quite sure that some of us out there who rely on our phone’s data connection are frustrated at times when we show up at a place, only to find the lack of a 3G signal throw a spanner in the works, as 2G connectivity is way too slow to work with. Well, if you need a decent mobile Internet connection on your device at all times, might I recommend you make the move to Japan instead? The Land of the Rising Sun is apparently a full 3G nation, according to TCA’s official statistics as of July this year. In fact, all top three of Japan’s telco subscribers, 126,194,300 in total, are now 100% on 3G+ or LTE. (more…)

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon has been a known entity since May, when the company gave us a look at the 14-inch, Ivy Bridge-packing Ultrabook. Up until now, though, the successor to the ThinkPad X1 remained somewhat shrouded in mystery, with no pricing or specific availability information to its name. But no more — Lenovo’s just raised the official curtain on the Carbon, announcing a pricing scheme of $1,399 and up and targeting an on-sale date of August 21st at Lenovo.com. The entry-level model will run a 1.7GHz Core i5-3317U CPU with 4GB, and it includes a 128GB SSD and Intel’s HD integrated graphics.
