NetZero gives subscribers free data to share through Facebook, doles out friendship 1GB at a time

NetZero 4G hotspot hands-on

The classic trick to spurring early adoption of a data hotspot service is to share it with others, and NetZero has every intention of being as giving as its precursors. Its new Data Share program lets those who own of the company’s WiMAX devices give away up to 1GB of data every month through Facebook, spread across five friends at 200MB each. Apart from needing NetZero hardware in a coverage area, there’s no financial strings attached — neither the sender nor the recipient needs to adopt more than the free, 200MB per month they already have just for showing up. The real dilemma is managing just who gets the data in the 4G provider’s first come, first served approach to the sharing link that hits friends’ social news feeds. NetZero is no doubt hoping that the ubiquity of the giveaway (and a half-off device sale during October) will put an early end to any rivalries.

TMobile to Offer the Nokia Lumia 810 exclusively in the US

T-Mobile announced on Monday that it will exclusively offer the Nokia Lumia 810 in the United States. Set to be available “in the coming weeks,” the 810 features a 4.3-inch OLED WVGA Clear Black display, an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss optics rear-facing camera, a 1.2-megapixel Skype HD-certified front-facing shooter, Windows Phone 8 and support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ faux 4G network. If those specs sound a little familiar, they should — the 810 seems quite a bit similar to the already announced 820. There are some details absent from this release, however, including CPU, storage, RAM and pricing, but we expect this to be remedied in the coming days. Now that T-Mobile and Ma Bell have called dibs on some of Nokia’s first wave of Windows Phone 8 devices, we’re left to wonder if America’s other two major wireless carriers will soon get with the program.

LG Optimus L9 unleashed on T-Mobile

With a collection of specifications that’ll not quite beat the competition but, together, create a smartphone that’s ready for the Fall, LG re-introduces the Optimus L9 for T-Mobile. This device comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a massive 4.5-inch qHD display with Gorilla Glass 2 across the front. This device works with T-Mobile’s own 4G network and their Unlimited data plan as well as a dual-core processor to keep you quick in more ways than one.

This device has a 5 megapixel camera on the back with a collection of LG’s newest and most entertaining features. One example is their “Cheese Shot” which allows you to simply say “cheese” loud enough for the phone to hear when you’ve got the feature activated to take a photo. This device also has panorama photo mode and continuous shot – for rapid-fire shooting.

You’ve got SlackerRadio onboard for radio stations galore, SmartShare for DLNA-capable pushing of your media to HDTVs, and BLuetooth 3.0 for wireless connections as well. This device works with Mobile Hotspot for shared data, Wi-fi calling, and a lovely 2,150 mAh battery under the hood for lots and lots of uptime. The camera on this device also shoots 1080p video for your favorite memory collecting – with simultaneous video and photos too!

The LG Optimus L9 is a continuation of the series of Optimus devices we saw earlier this year at IFA 2012. This collection sizes up LG’s vision for the smartphone with squared edges and an experience that’s just as lovely on one LG as it is on the next – and here with a dual-core 1GHz processor (OMAP from Texas Instruments) and T-Mobile’s 4G network, you’ll be rolling with speed and power. This device will be available “this fall” from T-Mobile – pricing incoming, too!

Likely HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&T-friendly LTE surfaces at the FCC, just in time

HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&Tfriendly LTE surfaces at the FCC just in time

Isn’t that convenient. With only weeks left to go before the official Windows Phone 8 launch event, what’s likely a version of the HTC Windows Phone 8X with North American LTE support has stopped by the FCC for approval. The PM23300 variant we see here (the international 8X is the PM23200) supports both the needed 700MHz LTE band for its eventual appearance at AT&T as well as AWS for wider AT&T coverage and the big three Canadian carriers. All are good signs that HTC is just about ready, although T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers might not want to get overly excited just yet — there’s no AWS 3G, CDMA or Verizon-ready 700MHz LTE to be found on this 8X, which shows that any US launch will still demand multiple editions. The others won’t be far behind in the FCC race with that November release window already locked in.

Alcatel-Lucent flies Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 over 3,280 feet using LTE: reach out and buzz someone (video)

AlcatelLucent flies Parrot ARDrone 20 over 3,280 feet with LTE reach out and buzz someone video

The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 is many good things, but “long-ranged” isn’t what comes to mind with a 165-foot maximum distance between pilot and quadrocopter. Not to be daunted, Alcatel-Lucent has conducted a test with an ad hoc LTE network, a USB modem and a smartphone to see just how far the remote-controlled aircraft could go on 4G. In practice, quite far: thanks in part to the inherently wide coverage of the 800MHz band in France, the team flew the AR.Drone more than 3,280 feet (one kilometer), all while streaming 720p video of the farmland below. Besides giving us ideas for a North by Northwest remake, the flight emphasized the possibilities that come when we have access to a long-distance wireless link with high bandwidth, such as monitoring crops or some very literal field journalism. The challenge will be convincing Alcatel-Lucent to share its trick and let us pester our not-so-next-door neighbors.

[Thanks, Vincent]

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Camera promises “significant shift” for photo/video sharing

The folks at AT&T are proud today to present the Samsung Galaxy Camera, a device we got our hands on earlier this year at IFA 2012 in Germany. This device is first a camera and second an Android device, so to speak, with a full touch interface on the back, Android inside, and a fully functional point-and-shoot camera up front. This device is a crossover that takes the Android mobile operating system to new strange dimensions – have a peek at our hands-on time with the device while you’re thinking about your photo future.

This device will have 4G – but not 4G LTE mind you – with AT&T – that’s HSPA+ and still certainly worth a tap. It’s got a 4.8-inch HD Super Clear LCD on the back, a 21x optical zoom lens up front, and works with a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor inside. Inside you’ve got a quad-core Exynos processor from Samsung itself – just as we’ve seen with the international Samsung Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note 10.1. This device works with Smart Pro Mode technology for pre-set options configured for professional-level images – so sayeth Samsung.

Chris Penrose, senior vice president of AT&T Emerging Devices, notes that this is going to change everything for the video and photo sharing universe.

“Wirelessly enabling Samsung’s Galaxy Camera will create a significant shift in how consumers share and communicate with photos and videos. By posting instantly to social networking sites or sending directly to another device, the person behind the lens is essentially offering family and friends the opportunity to share in the moments as they are actually experiencing them.” – Penrose

It’s with AT&T’s HSPA+ 4G network that you’ll be connecting, and with Samsung’s advanced technology in both the Android-wielding device universe and photography environment that you’ll be taking full advantage of. You’ve got AllShare Play, Share Shot, and Buddy Photo Share working on the device for more sharing than you’ll ever know what to do with, too. Have a peek at our hands-on with these features on the Galaxy S III to see what it’s all about – and note that the Galaxy Camera has not been priced, but AT&T has said that it will be in stores “in the coming weeks.”

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE takes a tour through the FCC with AT&T-capable 4G and beyond

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE takes a tour through the FCC with AT&Tcapable 4G

Huawei hinted last week that the Ascend P1 LTE would travel beyond British shores; it just didn’t say where. Based on a new FCC filing, North America is sounding like a good (if very broad) destination. The regulator has cleared a version of the Android 4.0 hardware packing AT&T-friendly 700MHz LTE frequencies as well as AWS support that could suit it to Canadian LTE providers and future T-Mobile deployments. We’ve likewise noticed AWS-based 3G join the usual 850MHz and 1,900MHz approvals for North American HSPA providers. With such broad coverage, it’s difficult to narrow down just the exact carriers that could embrace the Ascend P1 LTE if it launches on this side of the Atlantic. Whatever the choices, it’s clear that Huawei is hedging its bets.
