Sony Alpha A99 poses for someone else’s camera, no optical viewfinder in sight

Sony Alpha A99 poses for another camera, no optical viewfinder in sight

Technical details of Sony’s rumored Alpha A99 have been overflowing. The actual camera, however, has been elusive until now. A press photo just spotted on Xitek (and passed along to Sony Alpha Rumors) is believed to be authentic and speaks volumes about Sony’s pro camera strategy: as shown, there’s no obvious space for an optical viewfinder, hinting that the company’s full-frame shooter is going with an OLED-based electronic eyepiece like that of its crop-frame A77 precursor. The image doesn’t show much more than that and a conspicuous orange ring to remind us that we’re gazing upon an Alpha, but it’s tough to ignore that more compact (and hopefully lighter) body. Whatever the cosmetics are like, rumors now assert that the 24.3-megapixel, translucent-mirrored A99’s early September release has been locked down to September 12th; if that’s true, it may give photographers as much reason to be happy that day as phone buyers.

Photos speculated to have been taken by the Sony A99 spotted online

The other day we reported on the Sony A99. Unfortunately we had to pull the photos at the request of the photographer involved, Michael Yamashita. Well if you’re looking forward to seeing what the A99 is capable of, another photographer called Mr. Mao has written in his blog a few days ago that he is shooting with a new Sony DSLR camera while in Mongolia. Naturally he did not mention the model of the camera, but he did post some photos which can be found on this website here.

The EXIF data on the camera was deleted so details about the image sensor size, model name and etc. will not be revealed. It should be noted that the link above will require a user name and password, so head on over to Sony Alpha Rumors for the details and the links to the additional photos! However since it can’t be confirmed if the photos do belong to the A99, we suggest you treat it with a bit of skepticism for now.

Could this be the Sony A99?

Update: Michael Yamashita, has asked us to remove the photo. The link to Instagram has been removed as well.

Sony’s A99 camera has yet to be revealed but so far we’ve heard some rumors about the camera, such as its alleged specs. More importantly we have yet to get a glimpse of the camera itself, and in a recent video (Update – it looks like the video was removed, possibly at the request of Sony?) of National Geographic photographer Michael Yamashita, the Sony A99 may very well have been spotted in his hands! Pictured in the screenshot above, we can clearly see Yamashita holding a camera and in an Instagram photo uploaded by the photographer, he was quoted as saying, “shooting for Sony”.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean that the camera in his hands belongs to the A99, some have noticed that the camera he is using looks different compared to the Sony A77 based on the hot shoe alone. The A77 uses the smaller Minolta Hot Shoe while if the specs are to be believed, the A99 will be utilizing a standard sized Hot Shoe. It seems like a bit of a stretch but what do you guys think? Are we looking at the A99 here?

Sony’s not unleashed a full frame camera for some time, so when a purported spec-sheet for the upcoming Alpha A99 breaks cover, we’re elbowing our way to the front to see it. According to Sony Alpha Rumors, it’ll be a 24.3-megapixel CMOS Exmor sensor with an ISO range of 100-25,600, 14 bit RAW output and a 1/8000 maximum shutter speed. Other nuggets of interest include a 102 point AF system, full 1080p HD video recording (at 60fps) and a 921k dot LCD (like that seen on the A77 pictured). When might we see this come to market? According to the rumor-mill, sometime in October, with an official unveiling in early September. Along with everything else, it seems. Head on down to the source for the full spread.

Rumored Sony A99 video specs might be related to an unannounced camcorder model instead

About a week ago, we reported that thanks to an alleged leak, video specs from Sony’s rumored A99 camera were revealed. Now assuming those specs are to be believed, Sony’s A99 camera could prove to be quite a powerhouse in terms of video recording, and could possibly give dedicated camcorders a run for their money! However as it turns out, the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors are now reporting that those specs do not belong to the A99, but actually belong to an unannounced camcorder model. They are speculating that it might be related to the new E-A mount hybrid camcorders but are unable to confirm it at this point in time. However as it is with rumors, they are best taken with a grain of salt until official information can be unveiled, but in the meantime if you were looking forward to seeing those specs on the yet-to-be-announced A99, you could be in for a disappointment.

Sony A99 rumored video specs leaked

DSLR cameras these days are pretty good at recording videos at pretty good quality. One of the episodes of the television series, House, was actually shot entirely using the Canon EOS 5D MK II, so we guess having good video capture features and specs for high-end DSLR cameras is almost to be expected these days. That being said, Chinese website Xirumo has posted some details of the video specs for the rumored Sony A99 DSLT camera, and based on what we’ve seen, they are pretty impressive if true! (more…)
