By now, you’re likely familiar with Twelve South, the Mac-minded accessory maker that prides itself on staying small. Well, three years after the debut of its first product, the BackPack, it’s refining the shelf accessory in three ways that’ll make you smile. If you’ll remember, the BackPack originally began its life as an attachable storage shelf for the iMac and Apple Display, which sat discretely behind the unit. Now, not only can the BackPack 2 be attached in a forward-facing manner, but it also offers integrated cable management and vertical support pegs to properly hold equipment such as the MacBook Air and upright hard drives. In all, the BackPack 2 will accommodate up to 3.5 pounds of gear, and it’s available now for $34.99. If you’d like to get acquainted with the redesign, just check the gallery below.

The Nexus 7 has been shipping out to customers across Europe and the United States, but accessories for Google’s affordable tablet have been lacking. There’s a simple polyurethane cover, but no premium options or docks of any kind. Nordic Hardware has spied some slides that detail some accessories that are on the way from ASUS, including a premium leather cover, desktop dock for the tablet, and 10W power charger.

The first accessory is a “Premium Cover” for the Nexus 7. ASUS describes the cover as being made from genuine leather, and it will have a microfiber material on the inner flap in order to keep the screen clean. The case is said to be hardened and reinforced to protect against tumbles, and several colors will be available, including red, orange, black, and white. The cover will ost $39.99 and be available by the end of August.

Next up is a desktop dock for the tablet. Many were wondering what the 3-pin connector on the side of the tablet was for, and it looks like it was added to take advantage of accessories such as this. Having said that, the dock is very basic: it only includes a microUSB port so you can supply power to the tablet, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio output. There’s no video output of any kind, as ASUS had to scrap the necessary silicon inside the Nexus 7 to keep costs down. The dock looks to cost $49.99 and be available on August 24th.

Finally, ASUS will be offering additional 10W wall chargers for the Nexus 7 in case you lose the one that comes in the box. ASUS will offer options for the United States, UK, Australia, and Europe, and a 90cm long microUSB cord will also be thrown in for good measure. They’re a little pricey at $24.99, so it might be worth shopping around for an alternative.

A report from iMore this morning indicated that Apple is planning to unveil the next iPhone along with the iPad mini on September 12th. The next iPhone would then ship out to customers 9 days later on September 21st, although the exact launch date for the iPad mini wasn’t quite as clear. iLounge corroborates iMore’s sources, saying that the next iPhone will launch in late September, but the site isn’t quite as confident on the prospects of the iPad mini.

iLounge believes that the iPad mini won’t make an appearance at the September event, as the device reportedly isn’t ready yet. A source speaking to iLounge claims that the smaller tablet should ship in time for November, an odd date which is usually untouched by Apple releases but is perfectly poised for the holiday season. In addition, Apple is reportedly working on accessories to accompany the iPad mini, which include smaller versions of the Smart Cover and Smart Case.

The same is true of the next iPhone. Apple is said to be working on two cases for the next iteration of its smartphone. The first will be similar in style to the current bumper case sold for the iPhone 4 and 4S, while the other case will have “a major impact on the accessory market.” It’s not clear exactly what Apple is cooking up, although iLounge believes it could involve a kickstand.

Finally, minor details are hinted at for the fourth-generation iPad. The chassis on the next iPad will be tweaked slightly, retaining the same design and shape but swapping in the new smaller 19-pin dock connector that’s been rumored to make an appearance on the next iPhone. An additional microphone will be also be added onto the rear of the device which will assist in noise cancellation for FaceTime calls and video recording. The iPad mini may see a debut this year, iLounge and its source notes that it’s unlikely that Apple will refresh the new iPad this year.

There is no lack of creative ideas waiting to receiving funding through Kickstarter, but this one is just plain cool: a company called Out of Print has come up with the idea of sticking your tablet inside a jacket that looks just like a classic book. That way, when you’re reading eBooks, you can make it look like you’re reading an actual book instead of staring at your tablet. Sure it’s an idea that doesn’t add any new functionality to your tablet, but to the book-obsessed, it will likely be an idea worth some money nonetheless.

The Kickstarter campaign for the eBook jackets has already hit its funding goal – $15,000 – which means that for the next 23 days, Out of Print has the chance to raise additional funds that will help ensure this project becomes a reality. At the start, Out of Print will only be offering 14 different designs: 10 of them feature original book cover art licensed by Out of Print (all of which you can see in the picture below), while the other four will simply be solid colors – charcoal, evergreen, indigo, and red.

For the moment, Out of Print is only offering covers that fit the Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, iPad 2, and the new iPad. It’s unclear if Out of Print will eventually offer additional cover designs beyond this initial set of 14, but the company does say on its Kickstarter page that it’s open to producing more jackets that fit other devices. Out of Print hopes to have the first batch of jackets finished and on the way to backers sometime in September, so backers of the project will be getting their products shortly after the Kickstarter wraps up on August 9.
