Acer brings options galore to new Aspire V5 and V7 laptops (hands-on)

Acer brings options galore to new Aspire V5 and V7 laptops ships this month for $499 and up

Choice, you say? Acer’s newest laptop duo is offering that in spades. At a gala this morning in New York City, the company rolled out quite the arrangement of new kit — not the least of which was a revamped Aspire V5 and Aspire V7. The two lines ship with a 14- or 15.6-inch display, giving users the option of a 1,366 x 768 panel or a (highly recommended) 1,920 x 1,080 IPS panel; those seeking something even smaller will also find an 11.6-inch option in the V5 range, weighing just three pounds and measuring under an inch thick. The whole lot can be selected with dual- or quad-core chips from AMD and Intel, while select configurations are equipped with NVIDIA’s GeForce GT7XXM series or AMD’s Radeon HD8750 discrete graphics.

In essence, the V7 only differs from the V5 by adding a “silky touch” finish on the bottom, the “latest Intel CPUs,” optional SSDs and Intel’s Wireless Display (WiDi) technology. Both ranges offer the new Acer Converter Port, which aims to make the act of connecting to an external display, HDD, router, etc. a lesson in simplicity. The newfangled V series will ship at the end of the month with prices starting at $499, but you can bet that the model you’re really after will land far north of that.

Acer Aspire V5 and V7 Ultrabooks offer thinner design, faster internals

Today during Acer‘s press event in New York City, the company outed a ton of new products, including the quite unique Aspire R7 convertible all-in-one laptop of sorts. However, if it’s a traditional design you’re after, Acer released the Aspire V5 and V7 Ultrabooks like that offer a thinner design than previous models and of course faster hardware on the inside.

Acer claims that these new notebooks are 9% slimmer than previous-generation hardware, which doesn’t seem like a huge difference, but Acer seems to think that users will notice a change with these new machines. The new V series includes models all the way from 11.6-inchers to larger versions with 15.6-inch displays, all of which come with touchscreen and non-touchscreen variants.

You can also get the new V series with either an AMD dual- or quad-core processor, or an Intel Core chip with either two or four cores as well. Select models can also be equipped with NVIDIA GeForce GT 7000M series or AMD Radeon HD 8750 discrete graphics, which means you’ll be able to do a bit of gaming if you shell out the money for it.

As for availability, the V series laptops will be available toward the end of this month, with a starting price of $499. No word on retail locations that the laptops will be available at, but as with the other new products that Acer announced today, we’re guessing that Best Buy will be the exclusive retailer for the new machines.

Acer Goes To A Whole New Level Of Crazy With The Aspire R7

acer aspire r7

Acer just announced the Aspire R7, a strange hybrid of a desktop all-in-one, laptop, and a tablet that was previously teased in some promotional Star Trek commercials. It’s honestly really, really weird.

We always expected that Windows 8 would lead to some really strange convertible touchscreen devices, but the Aspire R7 is a whole new kind of crazy. The first thing you’ll notice about the Aspire R7 is that Acer seems to have forgotten how laptops are made. The trackpad sits behind the keyboard, which is a bit perplexing until you realize that Acer doesn’t really want you to use the trackpad at all.

That’s because the Aspire R7 has something called an Ezel hinge that gives the 15.6 touchscreen display an amazing degree of flexibility. You can lie the 15-inch, 1080p touchscreen display completely flat with the device, turning the Aspire R7 into an oversized tablet. You can also angle the display so that it sits flush with the keyboard and covers the trackpad completely. I’m honestly not sure why the trackpad is there in the first place.

As a whole, the Aspire R7 seems to be incredibly well built. It’s made of some type of aluminum-like material, and there’s virtually no flex to the device. On the other hand, it’s very large and very heavy, which means that it won’t be very portable. It’s probably one of the nicest pieces of hardware Acer has ever built. But I don’t know who would use something as crazy as this.

Other key specs for the R7 include:

  • Intel Core i5 1.8GHz processor, with Turbo Boost to 2.7GHz
  • 6GB Of DDR3 RAM
  • 500GB SATA HD, paired with a 24GB SSD
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • HD webcam with dual mics
  • 2 USB 3, 1 USB 2 ports
  • 5.3 lbs and 1.1-inches thin

Acer also announced the Aspire P3, an ultra book convertible with a detachable display, and the Iconia A1, a 7.9 inch Android tablet. But it’s the Aspire R7 that stole the show here. It’ll be available for sale exclusively at Best Buy retail locations starting May 17th, and can be pre-ordered now at the Best Buy online store for $999.

Acer Iconia A1 crashes the Nexus 7 tablet party

Looks like $169 is the new sweet spot for Android tablets, and bringing the fight to Google’s Nexus 7 is the new Acer Iconia A1. Fronted by a 7.9-inch LED IPS display, and promising seven hours of Android – version unspecified – on a quadcore processor, the Iconia A1 also records 1080p Full HD video using its rear 5-megapixel camera.

There’s also a front-facing camera for Skype and similar, along with a microHDMI port for hooking the A1 up to a nearby display. Other connectivity includes microUSB 2.0, WiFi b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0, and there’s integrated GPS (though no sign of a 3G variant).

Acer will offer 8GB and 16GB versions of the Iconia A1, with support for up to 32GB microSD cards. The 4:3 aspect screen runs at 1024 x 768, and the whole thing tips the scales at 0.9 pounds and 0.44-inches thick.

Generally it seems Acer has left alone with its modifications, but there is a Touch WakeApp gesture which the company says will kick into preset apps when you swipe in a certain way. Of course, you also get the full Google Play market to explore, if Acer’s tweaks aren’t sufficiently engaging.

The Acer Iconia A1 will go on sale from June, priced at $169.99 for the 8GB model and $199.99 for the 16GB model.

Acer Aspire R7 notebook flips, twists, and folds on new “Ezel” hinge

Acer held a presser today in New York City and revealed some new devices coming to consumer shortly. The most interesting of them all is the Aspire R7, which is a convertible all-in-one laptop of sorts, but it’s quite different than what you’re probably used to, as the display can move around in all sorts of ways, thanks to Acer’s new “Ezel” hinge.

MOD-151312_AcerR7hinge

This laptop sports a 15-inch display that sits on a hinge that allows the screen to be pushed up or back, as well as folding in out and down so that it lies nearly flat with the rest of the computer. The 15-inch display sports a 1080p resolution with your choice of an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor to keep things running smoothly.

Of course, the display is touch-friendly, so no matter how you twist the display, you’ll be able to swipe and tap your way around the device. The whole thing will weigh in at about 5.5 pounds, which is pretty hefty for a laptop hybrid, but what you’re getting is essentially a mix between an all-in-one desktop and a laptop.

As for availability, the Aspire R7 will be out on May 17 only at Best Buy for $999, with pre-orders beginning today. As for further specs, we’re looking at 6GB of RAM, 500GB of hard drive storage (with a 24GB solid date drive), and a bevy of ports and sockets that most users will take advantage of.

Acer Announces Aspire R7 Notebook Hybrid, Aspire P3 Ultrabook Convertable, Iconia A1 Android Tablet

Acer Announces Aspire R7 Notebook Hybrid, Aspire P3 Ultrabook Convertable, Iconia A1 Android Tablet

Acer teased a “unique noteook” in a Star Trek trailer a few weeks ago, and earlier this morning, the company held a press event in New York City to unveil what they consider to be a unique notebook. We believed what Acer could be unveiling today could be a laptop / tablet hybrid, such as the HP Envy X2 or similar devices, and it looks as though that’s exactly what they had prepared to unveil today, but they had a bit more to show than just a simple laptop / tablet hybrid machine.

Acer Announces Aspire R7 Notebook Hybrid, Aspire P3 Ultrabook Convertable, Iconia A1 Android Tablet

One of the first products Acer showed off this morning was the Acer Aspire R7, which is a Windows 8 notebook that features a 15.6-inch screen which is mounted on an ezel hinge that allows the user to adjust the screen to whatever angle is most comfortable for them. The screen is also flippable, which makes it possible for you to share the R7’s screen with someone sitting across from you, or even lay the screen flat in order to collaborate with someone else.  Acer has re-imagined the layout of its R7’s keyboard / trackpad by moving the keyboard forward and having the trackpad closer to the screen. The Acer Aspire R7 is expected to be released on May 14 exclusively at Best Buy.

Acer Aspire P3 convertible wants to replace your iPad and keyboard dock

Acer] has revealed its latest ultrabook, the Aspire P3, throwing Windows 8 into a touchscreen convertible as part of the company’s renewed focus on touch devices. Packing an 11.6-inch HD IPS LCD display, Core i3 or i5 processors, and up to six hours of battery life into a 0.77-inch thick notebook, the Aspire P3 looks at first glance like a regular laptop but – with the screen section pulled forward in what’s effectively a keyboard dock – can be flipped into a slate.

acer_aspire_p3

In that orientation, the P3 can be used either with the fingers or with a stylus; Acer will offer that separately, though the case will have a slot to store it in-between use. Connectivity includes a USB 3.0 port, HDMI, and a headphone socket, and there are Dolby Home Theater speakers and a 720p HD webcam on the front.

On the back, Acer has included a 5-megapixel camera. Inside it’s a choice of 60GB or 120GB SSD, and Acer says the Aspire P3 should wake from sleep in “only a few seconds.” The whole thing tips the scales at 3.06 pounds, and Acer is billing the P3 as ideal for those who might otherwise have considered a tablet – like an iPad – and a separate keyboard dock.

The Acer Aspire P3 runs full Windows 8 – not Windows RT – and is expected to go on sale immediately. It’ll be priced from $799.99 depending on specifications.

Acer outs the Iconia A1: 7.9-inch IPS display and built-in 3G, priced at $169 (hands-on)

Acer outs the Iconia A1: 7.9-inch IPS display and built-in 3G, priced at $169 (hands-on)

And the news just keeps on coming. Acer just made yet a third product announcement here at its New York City press event. That would be the Acer Iconia A1 tablet, the same Android tablet leaked by a French retailer a few weeks back. Well, it’s official now, and it’s going on sale in the US later this month for $169. Spec-wise, it measures 11.1mm thick, runs a 1.2GHz quad-core processor from MediaTek, and is topped off by a 7.9-inch IPS display with 1,024 x 768 resolution (hey, what’d you expect on a budget tablet?). It also has 8 or 16GB of internal storage, as well as built-in 3G, similar to the comparably priced FonePad from ASUS. As for software customizations, you’ll find Acer’s WakeApp feature which lets you launch into a designated app when you wake the tablet from sleep.

In our brief hands-on, the device felt like you’d expect a $169 tablet to feel: it’s made of plastic, and lacks any sort of visual flare, but the back cover at least feels durable, and doesn’t seem to pick up many fingerprints (especially in white). The display, too, might be the best part about the device, its low pixel count be damned: the viewing angles are wide enough that you can read the screen with the tablet lying face-up on a table. That’s all for now, but we’ve got some hands-on shots below.

Update: We’ve amended the post with full (and correct!) specs.

Update #2: Acer’s confirmed the 16GB version of the tablet should sell for about $199 in the US. It’s expected to ht shelves by the end of the month.

Acer unveils Aspire P3 Ultrabook convertible (update: video)

Acer unveils Aspire P3 Ultrabook convertible (update: video)

Acer brought a whole bunch of folks out to NYC for a global press conference and made sure the attending press got their money’s worth. In addition to outing the unique convertible R7, the company unveiled the Aspire P3 — its first convertible Windows 8 Ultrabook. The screen can be angled forward to use as a traditional (ish) laptop or completely folded down in slate mode. As you can see in the image, there’s even a place to clip on a stylus. Acer wasn’t too forthcoming with specs during the presentation, but we’ll be sure to dig up those specifics when we get our hands-on (which should be coming shortly).

Update: You’ll find impressions and specs after the break.

Acer intros Aspire R7, a laptop with an adjustable display like an all-in-one (update: video)

Acer intros Aspire R7, a laptop with an adjustable display like an all-in-one (update: video)

When Acer plans a global press event, asking journalists to fly in from twelve time zones away, you know it’s going to announce more than just some back-to-school PCs. The company just announced the Aspire R7, a 15-inch laptop whose display sits on a flexible “Ezel” hinge, allowing it to be pushed up and back so that it lies nearly flat — yep, just like an all-in-one desktop. Similar to the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga line, too, you can flip the screen all the way back so that it faces away from the keyboard, a feature that seems especially well-suited for giving presentations.

In terms of specs, Acer is being a little cagey, but we have learned the R7 has a 15.6-inch, 1080p display with a choice of Core i5 and i7 processors. The whole thing weighs in the neighborhood of five and a half pounds. Also confirmed: it’s up for pre-order now for $999, available exclusively at Best Buy in the US. We’re told it will ship May 17th. In the meantime, we’ve got hands-on photos below, and we’ll very shortly be adding some first impressions after the break.
