2014 could very well mark the year of wearable devices, and who knows? A smartwatch or a pair of smart glasses might just jolt an entirely new industry to mint money from. The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch has not exactly been, ahem, shifted to its maximum gear to date, and neither has other smartwatches from companies such as Sony and Pebble. Having said that, the market for wearable tech might just get a new player this year, with Acer of Taiwan plunging in headlong.

Acer has recently released a new Android 4.2 tablet for the Chinese market. Called the Tab 7, the tablet features a 7.0-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive multi-touch display, a 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core processor, a 1GB DDR3 RAM, an 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot (up to 32GB), dual cameras (2MP front & 3MP rear), WiFi, a micro-HDMI port, a 3000mAh battery and runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS. What you see above is the Acer Tab 7, where it is a tablet from the Taiwanese manufacturer that will not break the bank should you actually decide to bring this puppy home. In fact, it is the most recent affordable slate from Acer, where it is even more affordable than the Acer Iconia A1-830 that was unveiled by Acer at the recently concluded CES 2014, and when it finally hits the shelves, it ought to retail for a highly affordable $149.99.

It is no secret that HTC is not doing too well for itself at the moment. Not only is the company suffering financially, but on the legal front they are not having much luck either against the likes on Nokia whereby the Finnish company has successfully managed to obtain injunctions against several of HTC’s products in different parts of the world. That being said, what are HTC’s options? Sell themselves off to the highest bidder? Take themselves private like Dell did? Maybe merge with another company? All of these are possible scenarios although it seems that there have been rumors making their way around the internet which suggests that HTC could be looking to merge with another Taiwanese company, Acer.
Acer has a long history of producing computers, although it was only in the past couple of years did the company attempt to break into the mobile market with tablets and smartphones, so for them to acquire HTC who has a wealth of experience makes sense. Well as it turns out the rumors were just that, rumors, and that neither company will be merging, at least not for the foreseeable future. This rumor was dismissed by none other than Acer’s chairman, Stan Shih, who told the Taiwanese media that the company had no plans and no intentions of merging with HTC. Of course it is entirely possible for HTC to turn things around in 2014 with new products, so we guess we will just have to wait and see what the company has in store for us.
