eMachines EZ1600, Acer Aspire Z5600 and mysterious Gateway all-in-ones in the flesh

We got a quick look at the new all-in-ones from Acer, and they’re surprisingly diverse. The eMachines EZ1600 looks incredibly plastic, and almost perfect as a second computer for the kids; the Acer Aspire Z5600 classes up the joint, but might be a bit too staid in the design department; and an unnamed multitouch Windows 7 Gateway (pictured) for the “high end” of things seemed great outside of its incredibly buggy pre-release multitouch driver. Check ’em all out in the gallery below.

Acer’s Aspire Timeline gets its own splash page and press shots, like a real laptop

While Acer had slides aplenty to tout its new Aspire Timeline series of laptops last night, we were a bit short on actual press shots. All is forgiven however, with Acer’s new smooth jazz fusion-infused promo site for the laptop. Not only can you read riveting PR copy on the thing (“Time is your most precious possession, and as with all precious things, you can never have enough”) and check out some press shots, but the soundtrack will take you back to the last time you were watching PBS in between programs — Charlie Rose is on at 11PM, just in case you were wondering.

Acer’s dream team confirms netbook Android experiments, thinks it has a “good chance”

At Acer’s over-the-top product onslaught event last night, Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci and product guy Jim Wong confirmed they’d been playing around with Android in the labs, but didn’t think an Android netbook was ready for primetime. Beyond the previously-confirmed Acer A1 Android smartphone, Wong confirmed that they’ve prototyped android on a netbook, and that “it has a good chance” of making it into the hands of consumers, though he didn’t foresee any desktop application at the moment. He says the big obstacle is making sure consumers get a full-fledged browser experience, and that they’ll share more when they feel it’s consumer ready. He also stated that he was pretty Acer sure everybody was testing Android on netbooks, so we’ll see which manufacturer bites first.

Plethora of new Acer Aspires, eMachines, Gateway laptops and netbooks unveiled in one fell swoop

In addition to Timeline and the 11.6-inch Aspire One, Acer decided today to announce new laptops much in the way Nikon and other camera makers roll out their PMA lineup — in groups of eight or more. By our count, we’ve got at least ten different models here.

  • Aspire 5935 and 8935: The 18.4-inch 8935 laptop can output a 1080p resolution, True 5.1 channel surround sound and houses up to two HDDs totaling 1TB capacity. The 5935 meanwhile can hold just one 500GB HDD and doesn’t do full HD. Both support up to 4GB DDR3 memory, biometric fingerprinting, 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, and optional WiMAX.
  • Aspire 3935: A 13.3-inch ultra portable with 1366 x 769 resolution LED-backlit LCD and Intel Core 2 Duo / GM45 express chipset. Features built-in Wi-Fi / WiMAX, up to 4GB DDR3 RAM, biometric fingerprints, and 8 hours of use with a 8-cell battery.
  • eMachines D, E, and G series (pictured): 16 x 9 aspect ratio LCD. Available with Intel Celeron or Pentium processors for all models, plus option for AMD Athlon with E and G series. 14-inch D and 17-inch G have up to 4GB DDR2 RAM, 500GB HDD, while the 15.6-inch E series can feature up to 5GB. All of them boast a wide keyboard, WiFi, webcam, DVD drive, a 5-in-1 card reader, and Windows Vista SP1.
  • Gateway EC series: Lightweight and less than 1-inch thick. The 13-inch netbook has an LED backlit screen with 16 x 9 aspect ratio, Dolby Sound Room, SSD, DDR3 RAM, HDMI out, optional 3G and Bluetooth, webcam, and capacitive hotkeys on top of the keyboard.
  • Gateway 10.1-inch LT20, 11.6-inch LT30: Both are under 2.62 pounds, boast built-in WiFi, Webcam, optional Bluetooth and 3G modules, 5-in-1 card reader, and up to 160GB HDD. The touch pad supports multi-gesture features and reportedly it comes with a “cool protective bag” — yay?
  • Gateway ID series: Available in glossy midnight blue or night sky with a matte interior and silver-colored touchpad. It’s got an 15.6-inch LED backlit screen, slot-in DVD drive, webcam with a curtain (for privacy, obviously), mult-gesture touchpad, and capacitive hotkeys on top of the keyboard.

There’s still got plenty of missing pieces here, such as pricing and availability for anything here, but one thing’s for sure: we are thoroughly overwhelmed by the sheer number of new offerings.

Acer’s 11.6-inch Aspire One goes legit

After a little bit of suspense-free rumoring, the 11.6-inch Acer Aspire One is now official — and pretty lovable. It’s an inch thick, boasts a LED backlit screen with WXGA resolution, and runs the usual netbook internals like an Intel Atom processor, 160GB HDD and 802.11 b/g WiFi. On top of that there’s Bluetooth, 3G, Dolby Pro Logic Sound and a multicard reader. It’s also got a 8-hour lifespan with a 6 cell 5200mAh battery. Build quality is top-notch for its class, and we’d say Acer’s doing good by the Aspire One name — though they’re messing with any sort of tight definition of “netbook” in the process. No word yet on price or availability.

Acer Timeline hands-on

We just got all friendly with Acer’s new Timeline lineup, and while we couldn’t technically grasp at the hours upon hours of battery life they’re promising, we could definitely feel the palpable presence of longevity. The laptops are very much an interesting blance; they’re thin, but not astonishingly thin, they’re heavy for their looks (especially the 15.3-inch), and they’re styled aggressively in some ways while incredibly conservatively in others. We’re not sure we’re sold on the funky trackpad setup — the right and left buttons aren’t articulated, are sunken below the level of the touchpad, and are rather hard to touch — but we like that Acer is really embracing multitouch here. The chiclet keys have a lot of great travel to them, but the board overall felt a little cheap and “prototype-ey” — it may very well be a prototype.

Acer Has Android Prototype Desktop PC

At a press event tonight, Acer dropped an interesting fact: they have a prototype desktop PC running the Google Android OS. This isn’t the first we’ve heard of large-form-factor devices running Android; last week there were rumors HP was toying with Android as a laptop OS.

I personally think this is an awful idea. As our editor-in-chief Lance Ulanoff said on PCMag Radio today, Android totally lacks desktop-class productivity applications – yes, it has basic document editing options, but nothing with the power laptop and desktop owners would expect. When I floated the idea to Smart Device Central editor Jamie Lendino, he responded tartly, “haven’t we already seen the HTC Advantage?” That’s a reference to a failed, overpriced sort of Windows Mobile netbook that landed with a giant thud in the marketplace in 2007.

Linux definitely has a place on netbooks and desktops. But the Android variant of Linux (because that’s what it is, really) isn’t designed for powerful devices. Never mind that Android is hard to find on the market even in phones. Acer is a smart company with a lot of Linux experience. They’re probably toying with an Android desktop to compare it to other available Linux options. I’m hoping they’ll realize it just isn’t a good fit.

Acer’s 18-inch eMachines EZ1600, 24-inch multitouch Aspire Z5600 all-in-ones unveiled

Some more tidbits from the Acer event: new all-in-ones. The eMachines EZ1600 (pictured) boasts a 18.5-inch 16:9 screen and up to 720p resolution, an Intel Atom N270 processor with 945GSE chipset, 2 slots of SO DIMM memory, up to 160GB HDD, DVD-RW, Wi-Fi and a card reader. No price or availability, but you’ll be able to pick one up in either silver or black. On the classier side of things, we’ve got Acer Aspire Z5600 AIO with a 24-inch multitouch display that outputs a 1080p picture. It’s got the “latest generation of Intel,” up to 2TB hard disk space, a TV tuner, webcam and DVD/Blu-ray writer combo drive. Color us intrigued, but we’ll await judgment until we see some price points — if the Timeline‘s any indication, we might be in a for a pleasant surprise.

Acer announces Aspire Timeline thin’n’lights — $699 to $899

Acer’s announcing a ton of new gear right now (we’re live at the event in a New Jersey IMAX theater, of all places) and the hottest new products so far are the new Aspire Timeline laptops. Hard specs are a little light at the moment, but what we do know sounds pretty great: 13.3, 14.1 and 15.6-inch LED-backlit 16:9 screens in a one-inch thick chassis, Intel ULV processors, multitouch touchpads, HDMI and S/PDIF out, and eight hours of battery life — 10 hours with an SSD. The real killer is pricing, however: $699 to $899. Ouch — poor Adamo. We’re still at the event, but we’ll be trying to get as much info on these as we can, stay tuned.

Update: We got some more detailed specs, and things are still looking good — like, built-in WiMAX good. The processors will be ULV Core 2 Duos, and the 13.3-inch model will weigh 3.5 pounds while the 15.6-incher will tip in at 5.3 pounds. RAM is DDR3 and drives top out at 500GB spinners and 64GB SSD. We’re angling for clock speeds, we’ll let you know when we go hands-on
