Call of Duty: Ghosts receives official Activision and Infinity Ward nod

After a handful of leaks and rumors, the next Call of Duty game has been officially teased by publisher Activision. The official Call of Duty Twitter account posted earlier today, revealing “the next generation of Call of Duty,” with a link to the official Facebook page of the game, which looks to have just been launched, as details are still pretty scarce.

Infinity Ward also officially announced the new game on their Twitter feed, linking to a teaser trailer of the new game. The trailer doesn’t reveal much about the game, but it does point out a few details. At the end of the trailer, it says that the game will see a live demo at Microsoft’s May 21 event where the next Xbox will be revealed, confirming that the game will hit next-gen consoles.

The trailer also gives us a good look at what we assume will be the main protagonist in the game, and we’re assuming it’s Ghost himself, as you can see him put on that iconic skull balaclava toward the end of the trailer. Further details aren’t yet known, but we should be hearing more about the game later this month.

Both Amazon and GameStop are now accepting pre-orders for the game as well, with a release date slated for November 5, 2013. Neither retailer lists the game for the PlayStation 4, but we’re guessing that if the game is coming to the Xbox 720, we’ll also see it on the PlayStation 4 as well.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is this year’s CoD entry, headed to 360, PS3, PC and ‘next-gen consoles’ on November 5 (video)

STUB 'Call of Duty Ghosts' is this year's CoD entry, headed to 360, PS3, PC, and nextgen consoles

Like Punxsutawney Phil’s shadowgazing, we can rightfully expect a new Call of Duty game to be announced annually and available at the holidays. Also like our groundhog friend, the only annual questions we must ask are in the details — what is this year’s Call of Duty about, and who’s making it? It turns out that this year’s Duty development, unsurprisingly, falls on Infinity Ward’s shoulders — the folks who created the much lauded Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare — and it’s named “Call of Duty: Ghosts.” The first-person shooter is arriving on a whole mess of platforms this November 5th, including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, but also PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox — given that we don’t know release dates for the PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox, it stands to reason that Ghosts will arrive on a different date for those platforms. It’s also likely we’ll see a handheld version on Nintendo’s 3DS made by someone other than Infinity Ward, but we’ve got no direct word on that just yet. More ambiguous, Nintendo’s Wii U isn’t listed, but it stands to reason it’ll head that way as well (the last series entry, Black Ops 2, got a Wii U version).

The “Ghosts” in the title references … well, we’re not entirely sure. Previous CoD games featured a character named “Ghost” fairly prominently, though the plurality indicates a game about more than one individual. Infinity Ward head Mark Rubin calls Ghosts “a new sub-brand” in the CoD franchise, and it’s getting a new (unnamed) game engine to boot — another indicator that previous characters aren’t involved. We’re holding out hope that the often overserious, dramatic tone of previous CoD games is being completely thrown out in favor of a goofy game about hunting ghosts. The bullets pass right through their ethereal form! Run for your life! We’ll hear more about Call of Duty: Ghosts at Microsoft’s big next-gen console unveiling on May 21st, so hold tight. The first teaser video is just below the jump.

Call of Duty: Ghosts poster tips early holiday release

We first heard about solid details on the next Call of Duty game last week, thanks to a leaked Target promo ad. However, while Target listed the game for a November 5 release date, we took that with a heavy grain of salt, since retailers don’t always get the release date right. However, according to a leaked poster of the game, November 5 is indeed the date that we’ll see the game release.

cod-ghosts

IGN ended up getting a hold of the leaked promo poster from GameStop, and it lists November 5 at the bottom. Furthermore, Activision recently launched a teaser website for the upcoming game, which displays a skull that is most likely referring to the mask that Lt. Simon “Ghost” Riley wore in past Call of Duty titles.

The title of the game, along with the teaser website hints at the possibility that Call of Duty: Ghosts will follow Lt. Riley as the main protagonist in the game. The man shown on the box art and promo posters could actually be Ghost himself, as it looks like he is pulling off the skull mask that he iconically wears.

According to the game’s box art, it seems it will release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, and the Wii U. IGN says that an official reveal of Call of Duty: Ghosts will be expected tomorrow, so you can be sure that we’ll hear more details about the game real soon. In the meantime, we’ll ponder over the implications of a Ghost-based Call of Duty game.

Call Of Duty: Ghosts Teaser Website Launched

Call Of Duty: Ghosts Teaser Website LaunchedWord on the street has it that come 1st of May, Call of Duty: Ghosts will be revealed. If you cannot wait until the 1st of May, it seems that Call of Duty: Ghosts’ publisher, Activision, has launched a teaser site for the upcoming game. Perhaps to gauge the number of players who are interested, and perhaps to help spread the word around, the teaser site is asking fans of the series to link their Facebook and Twitter accounts to the page and to send out messages notifying their friends or followers about the upcoming game. Eventually a mosaic on the website (pictured above) will be filled and will eventually reveal an image, presumably the mask worn by the character Ghost.

Not much is known about the game at this point, although previous leaks have suggested that it could see an end of the year launch, and could launch across a variety of platforms such as the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and even Nintendo’s Wii U. In any case if you’re interested in seeing what Activision has to announce, head on over to the website (whose URL has enough characters to spell “Ghosts”) where hopefully more will be revealed in due time.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Could Be Unveiled On May 1 [Rumor]

Call of Duty: Ghosts Could Be Unveiled On May 1 [Rumor]

We’ve seen the box art for something called “Call of Duty: Ghosts“ pop up last week and earlier this morning, it showed up in Spanish retailer’s Xtralife’s product listings where it’s expected to be released on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U. But when will either Infinity Ward or Activision make the big unveiling of what looks to be their next Call of Duty game?

According to a recently leaked blueprints for a promotional display for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it looks as though we could be hearing about the game on May 1st as the blueprints clearly state its display should arrive by 5/1 and should not be displayed until that date. At this point, it’s unknown what will exactly be revealed on May 1 as Activision can choose to simply officially release the next Call of Duty game’s box art and call it a day. Or, if Activision follows their reveal for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, we could maybe see a trailer on May 1 along with some basic story details.

Either way, Call of Duty fans should circle May 1 on their calendars as being a pretty important day to check the Internet to hear more about Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Activision CEO Robert Kotick named one of the top paid CEOs in U.S. [Update]

Robert Kotick, who is currently the CEO of Activision Blizzard, and who was also the director/CEO of Activision from February 1991 to July 2008, has been named one of the top paid CEOs in the United States. Kotick ‘s compensation increased to $64.9 million in 2012. In a recent regulatory filing discovered by Reuters, a majority of Kotick’s huge compensation comes from stock rewards totaling $55,915,738.

Kotick, President and CEO of Activision Blizzard, takes part in a panel discussion in Beverly Hills

The stock rewards, however, will be stretched over a vesting period of 5 years, but due to regulatory reporting rules, Activision has to report the compensation the year that it was granted. So in reality, Kotick was really paid $8.33 million last year, as well as in 2011. Kotick’s base salary was $2,006,127 last year, and he received a bonus of $2.5 million. The other half of his earnings came from other forms of compensation. According to Reuters, Kotick’s compensation is now 3 times as much as Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldsman Sachs, and twice as much as Robert Iger, CEO of Walt Disney.

While Kotick’s compensation was phenomenal, Activision didn’t experience the same type of success. Activision’s revenue and net income only increased in the single digits last year, making its growth much slower than the year prior. Activision had to lay off a total of 70 of its full-time employees in order to cut costs. 40 employees were laid off after they completed development on Activision’s upcoming Dead Pool game, and 30 employees were laid off after the company announced that it would be pulling away from licensed games.

Kotick has been placed as the second most paid public-company CEO of 2012, right behind Oracle’s CEO and founder Larry Ellison. Ellison takes the lead with $96.2 million in compensation. However, according to Bloomberg, Kotick could receive another $16 million this year if he is able to meet the highest performance targets this year for Activision Blizzard. While that’ll still put him behind Ellison, it’s still a hefty bonus.

UPDATE: Updated post to reflect Kotick’s actual compensation for 2012.

Call of Duty: Ghosts appears in retail promo ads

If history is any indication, then it’s quite clear that yet another Call of Duty game will be released this fall. However, we’ve yet to really hear any solid details about the new title. However, leaked box art and promo ads have shown up, with the title of the game being Call of Duty: Ghosts and a release date of November 5, 2013.

call-of-duty-ghosts

The box art first showed up on Tesco Direct’s website, but the listing has since been removed. However, a Target circular has also been leaked, which shows the title art of the game, with a release date of November 5, 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The promotion is for $10 off any game $49.99 or higher when you pre-order Call of Duty: Ghosts.

target-ad

According to Charlie Intel, who obtained the leak, the new Call of Duty title is also expected to be announced “any day now,” according to their sources. While the rumored release date for the game seems more than plausible, retailers almost always use placeholders until they find out the official release date for a game, so November 5 may not be the actual release date.

We’re not sure if the title of the game is a reference to one of the characters in past Call of Duty titles, named Ghost, who is most-known for wearing that iconic skull-faced balaclava. If the game is, in fact, based around Ghost, it should be quite a doozy, as Ghost is one of the more favorited characters in the series. However, we’ll keep this with a grain of salt for now until we hear official word.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Uprising Map Pack Now Available On Xbox 360

The wait for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2′s new Uprising map pack wasn’t that long considering Treyarch’s last map pack, Revolution, was released on January 29 on the Xbox 360 and then a few weeks later on the PlayStation 3 and PC. Treyarch announced Uprising would be launched on April 16 earlier this month, and if our calculations are correct, this means today is the day Xbox 360 players have been waiting for as Uprising is now officially available.

As we reported when Uprising was first announced, players can expect to play through four new multiplayer maps: Magma, which is set in a Japanese village surrounded with volcanic eruptions, Encore has you playing through the aftermath of a deserted London music festival, Vertigo takes you to a futuristic, Indian high-rise and last, but certainly not least, is Studio which is a remake of Black Ops’ Firing Range.
