Verizon ‘vampire’ ad rips off Twilight, sticks it to AT&T

Hey, remember how all the lawsuits got dropped over the holiday period and we thought AT&T and Verizon would finally start to coexist like mature entities engaged in a civilized industry? Yeah, that didn’t last very long. Verizon is back with a biting ad campaign that continues poking fun at AT&T’s 3G coverage. The consumer is appropriately a vampire, whereas the young maiden keen on being consumed turns out to be… well, it’s more fun if we just let you watch it without any more spoilers. Needless to say, it’s some of Verizon’s funniest work yet. Head on past the break to see it.

[Thanks, Jay]

How many oranges does it take to charge an Apple? (video)

We’ve seen lemons power a digital clock, and we’ve seen an Orange tent energize a gaggle of Apples. But have you ever wondered how many oranges it would take to charge just a single Apple? Name games aside, we have to hand it to Imperial Leisure, the company that executed a new iPhone-centered advertisement aimed at raising awareness for Jaffa oranges. We won’t spoil the whole thing for you, but we will say that you’ll be far hungrier after watching than you are right now. Video’s past the break, per usual.

[Thanks, forumz]

DirecTV suing Dish Network over Why Pay More ads, says there’s plenty of reasons

While we settle our disputes the old fashioned way (Judge Judy appearances) DirecTV’s taking its beef with recent Dish Network ads to a slightly different courtroom. The “Why Pay More” ad campaign has been running for the last year but it appears the latest “Man on the Street” spot (embedded after the break) is what has really upset DirecTV, claiming that its package costs around $20 a month more than Dish. The lawsuit filed Thursday claims the DirecTV services offer more, and higher quality, channels than the one it’s being compared to and according to Multichannel News, the company mentions many of the channels this ad is airing on aren’t even a part of the Dish lineup being advertised. Of course, as long as it’s adding customers we don’t see Dish backing off the comparisons on its own anytime soon and if you wonder how long it’s willing totake the heat in court, just ask TiVo.

Verizon advertising says Droid is for men, Pre is for women (video)

If you ask us, the Palm Pre Plus pretty much sells itself. So if we were working out a promo campaign for it, we’d just display the competitive pricing front and center and get the hell out of the product’s way. But that just wouldn’t do for Verizon. After all the machismo it attached to the Droid, the wireless provider is back with a set of ads for the Pre Plus targeted at the modern lady. We’re not told why two slabs of plastic and silicon with comparable sliding keyboards and similar internals must be compartmentalized by gender, but we don’t really care. The new ads are crazy enough in themselves, so just go see ’em after the break.

Nokia mounts huge Ovi Maps signpost on a crane in London (video)

We’re generally reluctant to cover purely promotional stunts like these, but when you decide to jack up a house-sized arrow on a crane and hang it next to London’s Thames river, well, exceptions can be made. Nokia’s big push to inform the world that Ovi Maps is free — now and forever — has culminated in the above sign, whose most appealing feature must be that it allows commoners like you and us to control it. People can send in a missive and coordinates via text or email, and then watch as the giant pointer rotates to the given direction and displays their wisdom to the world. See it in action after the break.

CBS brings 3D advertising to Grand Central Station, glasses makers drink to that

We know good and well what kind of extravagant displays are available to gawk at in New York City, but now it looks like the locals will have yet another one to check out when they’re taking a breather from the rat race. CBS Outdoor has unveiled plans to deliver two solid hours (from 11:30AM to 1:30PM throughout February) of 3D advertising on an expansive, high-definition video screen installed within Grand Central Station. Unlike the glasses-free solution that we spotted at Intel’s CES booth this year, this one will still require onlookers to rock those heinous and soul-crushing glasses in order to “see” the “effect,” and with around 70,000 commuters passing by each day, we’d guess that the spectacle manufacturer who nabbed this contract is feeling pretty good right about now.

Nexus One Dock to cost $45, imminently available?

What’s this? Another Google ad heralding the imminent launch of a gadget desirable? We’re guessing yes just as those Apple ads preemptively signaled the launch of refreshed Macs and new Mighty Mouse. Engadget reader Geoff spotted the YouTube ad above that clearly shows the Nexus One Dock being available… and for “only $45!” For that tidy tithe you’ll get a charged phone and the ability to kick off a slideshow — presumably the “and more” refers to Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and AV tethering we saw in the FCC filing. We give this one a week, tops, before it’s available for purchase.

P.S. Don’t feel bad, we tried to click the play button too.

[Thanks, Geoff]

LG’s X300 ad strikes an amazingly familar tone

LG’s X300 laptop may have largely avoided comparisons to a certain other thin-and-light when it was announced at CES earlier this month, but it looks like LG is intent on driving that point home regardless. As you can see for yourself in the promo video after the break, not only has LG carried on the oftimitated manila envelope motif, but it tops things off with a just slightly off “la la la” refrain for good measure. All of which might have earned LG a few points for boldness if this were a parody ad released a few years ago but, sadly, this is 2010, and this ad is all too real.

[Thanks, Muller]

Nokia ‘Saga’ accidentally outed in AccuWeather ad?

We’re not quite sure what to make of this, but it appears that the AccuWeather app for S60 5th Edition devices has gone ahead and leaked an unknown Nokia device — the “Saga” — which appears to be a sort of N97 Mini Mini (two “Minis” on purpose there) that trades the tilting screen for a more traditional flat sliding one. As Symbian-Guru points out, Nokia itself doesn’t typically assign names to its handsets — it leaves that job to its carrier partners — so this might simply be a branded version of one of the existing N97 variants, but naturally, the leaked device theory is juicier. At any rate, if this were to come Stateside, they might have a bit of trouble slipping it by Samsung since they’ve already got a Saga in the mix here, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for some blander N, E, or X series label if this gets real.

Update: David Fields of the Nokia Messaging team is saying over on Symbian-Guru that it’s simply an N97 Mini — but that still doesn’t explain where the Saga name comes into play. The mystery continues!

Apple makes it official, acquires Quattro Wireless

Following up on last evening’s rumor, Apple has pulled the trigger and made its acquisition of mobile ad network Quattro Wireless official. A sale price wasn’t disclosed — $275 million is the popular number being thrown around — but the company’s CEO Andy Miller has been immediately elevated to Apple’s newly-minted VP of Mobile Advertising position. In a news post on Quattro’s site, Miller says that its products and services won’t change “for now” — but considering that it offers tailored advertising across a huge bounty of devices and platforms, we have to imagine Apple’s long-term strategy is going to involve making this framework more of an App Store value-add for developers. Time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: this is good news if (and only if) it either makes life easier on devs that want to offer awesome free apps or finally ushers in the era of free, non-carrier-subsidized, ad-supported smartphones that don’t suck.
