Ditch That Laptop Brick With FINsix’s New Tiny Notebook Charger

FINsix_Dart_5 Many aspects of computing have changed, but the laptop charger has remained sadly stable over the years; no matter what, we never seem to be able to ditch the lumpy power brick, that mid-cable eyesore that takes up tons of space in your bag and presents a ready hazard for stepping on. MIT project turned startup FINsix wants to change all that, and you can help them by reserving your own Dart… Read More

Swap Your Phone Charger For This Thin Transforming Adapter

Swap Your Phone Charger For This Thin Transforming Adapter

Technically there’s nothing really wrong with the charging cable that came with your smartphone. Except for that long cord you need to constantly wrap, unwrap, and more often than not, detangle. That won’t ever happen with the Thinium, though. It trades an annoying a cord for an ultra-thin transforming design that allows it to plug directly into an outlet.

IK Multimedia intros AmpliTube 30 with timeline editing, ships iRig HD

Artists going all-out on mobile music editing have relatively few options — GarageBand won’t always cut it for the pros. IK Multimedia thinks its newly launched AmpliTube 3.0 could be the solution for those producers on the move. The $20 iOS app introduces a full, multi-track audio editor that can create a final masterpiece. With the help of a guitar rig and customizable drum loop, the suite is theoretically good enough to keep computers out of the studio. Even if musicians don’t want to go that far, they may be happy to hear that IK Multimedia has shipped the iRig HD. The $99 interface gives iOS and Mac users a preamped adapter for instruments with quarter-inch plugs. While we’re sure some performers would rather stick to traditional recording methods, those who’ve embraced digital with open arms can check out both AmpliTube and iRig HD at the source links.

USB 5-in-1 Adapter Looks Like the World’s Simplest Puzzle

Sick of carrying around a ton of different cables and adapters for charging all your gadgets? This handy accessory lets you plug in five different types of connectors using one compact card.

usb adapter

Kikkerland’s USB 5-in-1 adapter offers Mini USB, Micro USB, 30-pin iPod/iPhone, Nokia and standard USB connections. When not in use, they all snap neatly into a flat card for easy travel, so you can throw it into your bag without wires getting all tangled. The card itself measures 6.46″ (L) x 4.4(W) x 0.75″ (D).

The only thing missing from this thing is an Apple Lightning connector, but if you happen to use something like the Mophie Helium battery case for your iPhone, that has a Micro USB connector, so you’re in luck.

It’s available from Kikkerland for just $15(USD).

USB Utility Charge Tool is the Geek Army Knife

Most people use and carry around a bevy of mobile devices these days. There’s nothing wrong with that, since I do it myself. However, it gives rise to various inconveniences like having to carry around tons of different chargers for all the devices.

One solution comes in the form of the USB Utility Charge Tool that’s like a Swiss Army knife of connectors that geeks and non-geeks alike would appreciate.

The charge tool has four connectors tucked neatly into it: a standard USB extension, a Micro USB connector, a Mini USB connector, and a 30-pin connector. It’s compatible with a range of devices, from your iPhone to your Nexus 7, so it’s especially convenient if you’re traveling and need to charge your devices while you’re on the go. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have Apple’s Lightning connector, so it can’t be used with the latest iPhones and iPads.

You can use it to charge your device using your laptop as the power source. Or you could plug the USB extension into a generic USB charger to power your devices up.

The USB Utility Charge Tool is available for pre-order from Fred Flare for $20(USD).

Insert Coin: Snapzoom gives Kickstarters a crack at its smartphone scope adapter (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

Snapzoom gives Kickstarters a crack at its smartphone scope adapter

Snapzoom stole a lot of hearts at Engadget Expand, but it didn’t quite steal enough votes to win our Insert Coin contest. Now you can exact some justice, as the smartphone adapter for binoculars, telescopes and microscopes is up for grabs on Kickstarter to let you zoom in on the moon, bacteria or whatever else you can think of. So far it’s vacuumed up $15,000 toward its $55,000 goal, and while the early bird offer is sold out, backers can still grab one starting at $60, a hefty discount from the final $80 retail price. For $90, you’ll even get a basic 10×25 compact Bushnell travel binocular tossed in, so if you want to see what made our Insert Coin judges go zoom-crazy, hit the source or video after the jump.
