Adobe Flash Player 10 Beta Available

This article was written on May 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

flash player 10.jpgAdobe has announced that the first Beta of Flash Player 10 is now available for everyone to download. It comes with al kinds of really nice features and improvements, but the best thing that we’ll probably see come out of this is the newly available 3D effects. One example that they gave of where this could be useful is taking 2D images and arranging them in a rotating 3D carousel similar to that seen to the right. Making your own Cover Flow clone wouldn’t take too long either then.

Concerned about performance? According to Adobe they are pushing some of the graphical processing onto the user’s video card so that the processor can be used for rendering special effects:

One of the best things about the creative features now available in Adobe Flash Player 10 beta is that they won’t slow down performance. With Flash Player 10 beta, developers can enable SWF content to render through the memory bandwidth and computational horsepower of the GPU hardware processor, freeing up the CPU to do more – such as render 3D content and intricate effects, and process complex business logic.

Here’s a list of some other notable new features in Flash Player 10 Beta:

  • 3D Effects – Easily transform and animate any display object through 3D space while retaining full interactivity. Fast, lightweight, and native 3D effects make motion that was previously reserved for expert users available to everyone. Complex effects are simple with APIs that extend what you already know.
  • Custom Filters and Effects – Create your own portable filters, blend modes, and fills using Adobe Pixel Bender, the same technology used for many After Effects CS3 filters. Shaders in Flash Player are about 1KB and can be scripted and animated at runtime.
  • Advanced Text Layout – A new, highly flexible text layout engine, co-existing with TextField, enables innovation in creating new text controls by providing low-level access to text offering right-to-left and vertical text layout, plus support for typographic elements like ligatures.
  • Enhanced Drawing API – Runtime drawing is easier and more powerful with re-styleable properties, 3D APIs, and a new way of drawing sophisticated shapes without having to code them line by line.
  • Visual Performance Improvements – Applications and videos will run smoother and faster with expanded use of hardware acceleration. By moving several visual processing tasks to the video card, the CPU is free to do more.

It will probably be a little while before we start to see developers making use of the new technology offered in Flash Player 10, but once a majority of users have upgraded the developers will be all over this like a kid in a candy store. 😉

Adobe Hacked, Data Of 2.9 Million Customers Compromised

Adobe Hacked, Data Of 2.9 Million Customers Compromised

A major cyberattack on Adobe has left data of 2.9 million customers compromised, the company revealed today through a blog post. The intruders were able to gain access and run off with a large number of Adobe IDs and encrypted passwords. Adobe also says that certain information on 2.9 million customers has been compromised, this includes encrypted credit and debit card numbers, their expiration dates and customer names. In another recent attack, intruders stole source codes for a number of Adobe products, such as ColdFusion and Adobe Acrobat. The company believes that there might be a connection between these two attacks.

The company says that it doesn’t believe the hackers were able to get access to or steal any decrypted financial information. It’ll still notify customers whose credit or debit card information was compromised. Adobe will provide them with an year’s worth of credit monitoring “where available.” In the meantime, Adobe will reset the passwords of all affected customers. Banks are said to have been put on alert as well so as to minimize the risk of any fraudulent financial activity taking place due to the leaked credentials. Federal law officials have been brought into the loop and Adobe is assisting them in their investigations.

Ginger is a new app for creating presentations, somehow tied to Adobe

Ginger is a new app for creating presentations, somehow tied to Adobe

Ginger isn’t available yet, but it is already generating buzz. Not for its marketing video, nor for its simple website, but for its potential tie to a massive company in the software world: Adobe. Ginger promises to enable users to “show your story to the world in minutes” via its upcoming mobile application — you can create slides with audio and visual components and then push them to various social media. It sounds a lot like PowerPoint for mobile, albeit with fewer options (no mention of video, for instance) — not exactly Adobe’s first foray into mobile, but another interesting step for the company.

The Adobe tie-in pops up when signing up for Ginger’s “keep me in the loop” email newsletter. A confirmation email from gingerfeedback@adobe.com arrives as confirmation, which tells us that either Adobe’s involved or the company’s been kind enough to Ginger to offer up free email hosting space (an unlikely scenario, we’d say). Of course, we’ve reached out to Adobe for further details and will let you know if we hear back.

Adobe Aims to Make Elements 12 Its Mobile-Optimized "Everyone" Software

When Adobe first launched Elements, it was the "amateur" version of its full Photoshop software. Now, with the release of Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere Elements 12, the company is angling to make it the more nimble, mobile cousin of the full Creative Suite.

Photoshop and Premiere Elements 12 now available, learn editing preferences

Adobe’s Creative Cloud not your thing? Photoshop and Premiere Elements 12 have just arrived to please your subscription-averse (and beginner-level) nature. The latest version of the outfit’s photo suite features Content-Aware Move for shifting objects within a photo and having the resulting gaps filled in, the ability to correct flash reflections in animals’ eyes and 64-bit support for Macs. Elements Mobile Albums are new to this release as well, and they let users view, edit and share photos on mobile devices through the firm’s Revel solution. Premiere Elements boasts motion tracking to move graphics, text and effects with objects, upwards of 250 sound effects and more than 50 soundtracks that rearrange themselves to fit the length of footage. Both the video and photo editing packages sport Auto Smart Tone, which learns a user’s editing preferences and serves them up in a one-click option.

While both programs have picked up a healthy share of upgrades, the pricing model remains unchanged. Mac and Windows versions are now available online from Adobe for $100, or $150 when purchased in a bundle. Upgrades are set at $80 for each, or $120 when the pair are snapped up together. As for boxed copies of the software, they’ll be available soon form brick-and-mortar shops and online retailers.

Adobe takes to new hardware like Project Mighty and Napoleon

adobe-mighty-penWho would have thought that Adobe would churn out hardware apart from software that they are so famous for? Adobe originally shared their vision for the Creative Cloud at MAX, where they claimed that this would open up the door for innovation and ultimately, help empower a new generation of creative folk. Of course, in order to make that vision come to pass, Adobe has decided to dip their toes into the world of creative hardware, and in this particular milestone, Adobe has introduced the idea of two devices – the cloud pen known as Project Mighty as well as the digital ruler that they call Project Napoleon. In order to bring both devices to pass as part of our reality, Adobe has teamed up with Adonit, who happens to be an awesome band of manufacturers that also believe in the power of creative devices that are paired with apps and services. The Adobe Mighty and Napoleon are tipped to ship sometime in the first half of next year.

In an early demonstration of Project Mighty, this unique creative pen happens to be pressure sensitive, which allow the artist in you to draw out natural and expressive lines. Not only that, the Project Mighty will be hooked up to the Creative Cloud, which enables one to tote one’s favorite personal digital assets wherever he or she goes, in addition to brushes and colors, not to mention the ability to copy and paste across devices, among others. No longer do you have to make the either-or decision of having the accuracy, expressiveness and immediacy of pen and paper while sacrificing the wonders of the Creative Cloud. Folks who are familiar with Wacom’s digitizer tablet should be able to resonate with Project Mighty right from the get go.

Needless to say, pricing and availability details remain unclear, but rest assured, Adobe will reveal additional information in due time.

Adobe Mighty Pen And Napoleon Ruler Tools Promise To Be Delivered On Time

Adobe Mighty Pen And Napoleon Ruler Tools Promise To Be Delivered On TimeThey say that a man is only as good as his word, and in this day and age where lawyers abound alongside plenty of Terms & Conditions for one to go through, one’s word is no longer good enough. Companies, too, would do well to take notice that they had better deliver on what has been promised to the consumer, otherwise this broken trust is going to take a long time to mend together afterwards. Adobe did confirm that its Project Mighty digital stylus as well as Project Napoleon ruler tool are on track to arrive sometime in the first half of next year.

That might disappoint those who are looking for a debut later this Christmas, but at least we have assurance from Adobe themselves that they would be rolling out these devices in the first half of 2014 after introducing them last May as a product concept. These unique accessories have been specially designed to cater for the existing range of Creative Cloud mobile apps that are available on the iPad and iPhone. For some background information, Project Mighty happens to be rather similar to Wacom’s popular tools, where it comes with a tool-selector button as well as a pressure-sensitive nib, so those who are used to Wacom’s tools should feel right at home from the get go. Pricing and availability details remain to be determined.
