You want obsessive coverage eh, well here it is: the latest Palm Pre ad just unveiled on Facebook. No smack-talk, no smarmy reference to the competition, just an impassioned plea that approaches gently upon the pads of kittens, gazes in your direction, and then walks away. If we didn’t know better, we’d guess that Pre was a new brand of feminine deodorant. Give it a whiff after the break.

Ad impression report proves the Palm Pre is out there, somewhere

With just over a fortnight to go before Sprint starts selling Palm’s Pre, it stands to reason that a few of the units have made their way out into the wild. According to Millennial Media, that’s absolutely what has happened, with this month marking the first in which it recorded “initial Palm Pre [ad] impressions.” In other words, those lucky few Pre owners (or “testers,” if you will) are really just goofing off online rather than testing tactility and radiation output. Good to know.

Palm Pre counting down to a June 6th launch?

Know what happens in the run-up to a major product launch? Rumors are mongered and advertisements are sold, lots and lots of ads. So we’re not surprised to find the two colliding in the shape of an un-calibrated (not Pre calibrated, it’s not yet in sync with the calendar) countdown timer that’s destined for every tech and consumer oriented website on these here Internets. Since Engadget maintains a strict editorial separation from advertising, there’s no way for us to know for sure if this is legit. However, we reached out to Notebook.com who gave us a very convincing backstory for how they came up with this timer (that we saw working) showing a June 6th launch — smack in the middle of the June 5th and June 7th dates rumored. Still, a Saturday? How very un-Sprint-like. Come on Palm, out with it already — make the date official.

Update: Notebook.com pulled the original story. No worries, we now know it’s true anyway.

New Apple Ad Mocks Microsoft Laptop Hunters In Usual Smarmy Way

Apple’s new ad takes solid aim at Microsoft’s recent much-talked-about Laptop Hunters ad series with the Apple style fully intact. In other words, it’s really, really smug.

The ad has a Lauren-type actress give her list of specifications, and of course, bunch by bunch, the drab-suited PCs are disqualified until she gets to “something that works,” at which point all the remaining PCs leave. Since we’ve been seeing some flames for criticizing the Laptop Hunters series, let me be one of many to say that I hate this and all other “I’m a Mac” ads. Sure, Laptop Series was kind of fluffy and without either substance or style, but at least it wasn’t condescending and smug. Now, what say you, commenters? [Apple]

Microsoft’s latest ad: iTunes and the iPod are crazy expensive

We’ve been wondering when we’d see the next Laptop Hunters ad from Microsoft, but it looks like the company’s throwing a change-up: its latest 30-second spot features Wes Moss, Certified Financial Planner, explaining that iTunes “costs a lot” while Zune Pass “costs a little.” The argument, of course, is that at a buck a song (or more), filling up your iPod costs way more than the $15 / month cost of the Zune subscription service, but we’ve got a feeling that Wes just won’t convince as many people as Lauren and Giampaulo — while we certainly think Zune Pass is a great deal, especially with the 10 free tracks a month now included, most people have plenty of music from all kinds of sources already, and an additional monthly bill in the current economy doesn’t seem all too appealing. Plus, well, this argument has never really worked for services like Yahoo and Rhapsody in the past, so we’re not sure it’s going to work now. But that’s just us — we’re sure you’ve got your own opinions, so check out the vid after the break and sound off.

P.S. If Wes looks familiar it’s because he was a contestant on Donald Trump’s The Apprentice. He was fired.

Inspire Taking Coach Bus

Inhabitat: Swedish advertising company, Acne, put together a rather eye-catching advertising campaign for Flygbussarna, an airport coach bus service, to inspire individual car drivers to take the coach bus instead. An installation made up of 50 wrecked cars resembling a Flygbussarna coach bus was placed next to the highway leading to the Swedish airport. Acne used 50 cars to emphasize that a coach bus can seat up to 50 people whereas, on average, an individual car has only 1.2 people. Consider that with the fact that a coach bus releases no more carbon than 4 cars. The campaign also included a website where visitors could watch cars whizz past the installation. The website tracked the number of cars that drove by and how much carbon could have been saved if those drivers had taken a bus instead.

Microsoft’s ‘Laptop Hunter’ Ads Made on Macs?

Here’s something that should get Mac fan boys foaming at the mouth. Pictured above is the office of Alex Bogusky, the brains behind Microsoft’s new Laptop Hunter commercials. Sure enough, those are two MacBook Pros sitting on his desk.

And pictured below is the surrounding office space of the ad agency, Crispin Porter + Bogusky. Yup, those are Macs, too. That could suggest the advertisements bashing Mac computers and users were themselves created on Macs. We’re not judging: Since when are ad agencies obligated to use the products they’re helping sell? We just love the irony.

Yahoo Japan plans facial recognizing, content personalizing billboards

Sometimes it seems like the worlds of science and marketing are in a constant struggle to present us with the future described in science fiction. Whether its flying cars, the OS from Minority Report, or robots that play “rock, paper, scissors,” the old saw is true: you can’t fight progress. And now it looks like Yahoo Japan has jumped into the fray, with a little help from Comel, a Japanese company that manufactures billboards. The two firms are collaborating on electronic signage that photographs passersby, analyses it using NEC’s facial analysis technology, and guesstimates his or her age. Once the demo is confirmed, the device spits out appropriate advertising content. According to the poorly translated press release, the “face image data” is then erased, saving only a record of the passerby’s age and sex — so you Civil Libertarians can rest easily. Right.
