First batch of new generic top-level domains born, Amazon looking unlikely to snag .amazon

First batch of new generic toplevel domains born, Amazon looking unlikely to snag amazon

After spending over a year thumbing through applications, ICANN has inked agreements for establishing the first new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). Those that made the cut this round were the Arabic word for web or network (.شبكة), game in Chinese (.戏), and the Russian for online (.онлайн), as well as website (.сайт) — as ICANN notes, these gTLDs will be the first to use non-Latin characters. Also coming out of the ICANN47 meeting for internet overlords is a bit of bad news for Amazon. A committee recommended that the retailer should not be given control of the .amazon domain, likely due to confusion the suffix could create with the Amazon region in South America. ICANN may see fit to go against the recommendation, but if Amazon’s history with objectionable applications is anything to go by, it’s looking like yet another $185,000 down the drain.

BlackBerry Z10 subsidy increases as sales suffer

The BlackBerry Z10 is the one phone that aims to revive the company and increase its market share, but seeing as how BlackBerry suffered a loss last quarter, they’re going to have to pull out the big guns. A handful of major carriers and retailers have discounted the Z10 to as low as $49 in order to increase sales for the new BlackBerry 10 device.

It’s only been four months since the Z10′s release, but it seems BlackBerry has waited long enough for sales to increase, and they’re wanting units out the door ASAP. Both Amazon and Best Buy have discounted the phone to a measly $49 after signing a two-year contract. That’s a whopping 75% off of the original $199 price tag.

As for the carriers, AT&T and Verizon are now selling the device for only $99 – half off of the original price. If you’re looking for the best deal, hitting up either Amazon or Best Buy would be the best option, obviously, but $99 is still a decent price for a phone that’s only four months old.

Off-contract prices for the phone are remaining the same, however, and it doesn’t look like T-Mobile is offering any kind of discount on the Z10 either. According to the Wall Street Journal, a BlackBerry spokesperson said that the price cut is merely just a “part of life cycle management to tier the pricing for current devices to make room for the next ones,” and “now is the right time to adjust the price.”

Four months does seem a bit early to start bringing the price down on devices, but does this mean we’ll see a second-generation Z10 sooner than we would normally expect? The company is still pumping out updates for the Z10, including BB 10.1, as well as what looks to be BB 10.2 that was leaked earlier this month.

Audible for Android gets design overhaul, improved library management and more

Audible for Android gets design overhaul, improved library management and more

Amazon knows that although a number people prefer (or need, in some cases ) audio over visuals to absorb published works, it’s still very important to provide a pleasant experience on the design front. In light of this, the Audible Android app has now been updated with a completely redesigned user interface, bringing along an enhanced navigating experience and an easier, more simplified way to manage your library. Audible listeners will also see a new “chapter-level” progress bar within the player, while other under-the-hood tweaks were made to improve the general performance and stability of the application. You don’t have to wait to download version 1.5, as it’s available as we speak from the Google Play store.

Xbox One, PS4 launch day pre-orders sold out on Amazon

As expected, Amazon has announced that they have run out of their “initial allocations” for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles. This means that launch day pre-orders for both consoles have sold out, including the Xbox One Day One Edition. Amazon says they still have standard editions of both consoles available for pre-order, but they can’t guarantee that they’ll arrive on launch day.

Amazon posted about the sold out consoles on their Amazon Video Games Facebook page, saying that it’s been “a crazy and exciting month” for next-generation console pre-orders, but while they announced that they were sold out of launch day pre-orders, they mentioned that they could be receiving more allocations in the future for launch day.

Amazon opened the floodgates for pre-orders for the Xbox One on June 10, so it took just a little over a month for initial supply to run dry. Previously, GameStop was the first retailer to announce that PS4 pre-orders have been sold out, and they stopped taking pre-orders for the console for the time being.

As for the Xbox One, Best Buy was the first to announce the dreadful news that pre-orders have been exhausted and are no longer accepting new orders. We expected that trend to spread to other retailers eventually over the summer, and it seems Amazon is the next one to make the list.

No announcements in the UK have been made yet as far as sold out pre-orders, but we can only assume that as the launch dates keep creeping in, the harder it will be to pre-order a new console. This means that if you’re thinking about hopping on board, now is the best time to do so, since each day that passes poses a risk for more sold out stores to come forward.
