10-inch Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet Rumored

10 inch Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet Rumored

The 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet from Amazon kick started the trend of small and mid-range tablets, that is the view that some have. While this can be debated upon, there’s no denying the fact that Google soon followed suit and released its own 7-inch tablet. Apple was a little late to the party with their iPad mini, but they made sure that their product will stand out from the crowd both in terms of finesse and price. It is now being reported that Amazon is developing a new 10-inch Kindle Fire tablet, this according to analyst Richard Shim of NPD DisplaySearch.

He claims that 10-inch Kindle Fire tablet will tout a 2560×1600 display with approximately 300 pixels per inch, that’s a greater pixel density than that of Retina Display iPad 4 which has 264 pixels per inch. Mass production of this new tablet will reportedly begin in the third quarter of 2013 and the company might, this is an unconfirmed rumor but still, release revamped 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire models with near 300 PPI displays. No details about specifications, pricing and availability have been divulged just yet. Analysts are known to speculate about unreleased products, that doesn’t mean a company’s product roadmap has been revealed. Amazon has not yet commented on this rumor, so there still exists a possibility that the 10-inch Kindle Fire tablet is much more similar to a figment of the imagination.

Acer Windows 8 tablet with 8-inch display appears on Amazon

Yesterday, we heard yet another rumor that Microsoft is working on a sub-10-inch tablet, something we heard before that back in April. The rumor yesterday said that Microsoft would be rolling out a 7.5-inch tablet early next year, but it looks like we might not have to wait that long to see a small-display Windows 8 device hit shelves, with Amazon showing the first ever Windows 8-wielding tablet with a display size under 10-inches.

Screenshot from 2013-05-03 19:13:13

The Acer W3-810-1600 is an 8.1-inch tablet with a resolution the same as the Nexus 7 – 1,280 x 800 – running Windows 8. According to the specs list, inside users will find a 1.5GHz A4 processor and 2GB of RAM, as well as 32GB of internal storage space. Graphics come by way of Intel GMA, and the battery has a 3500mAh capacity with a reported charge life of 8 hours.

The only connectivity feature listed is 802.11b/g/n – no mention of Bluetooth. There’s a rear webcam with a decent 2-megapixels, and the entire unit measures in at 8.62 x 5.31 x 0.45-inches with a weight of 1.1-pounds. The color for the device is silver – it is possible there could be other color options, but only time will tell.

And finally, there’s the price: $379.99. While it isn’t the cheapest tablet out there, the price tag is nothing unusual for a slate, and it is important to remember that it runs full-blown Windows 8, not the less-than-consumer-embraced Windows RT. There’s nothing else to speak of on the device for now, but if the rumors prove true, we should start hearing about the slate – or others like it – by this fall.

Unannounced Acer Iconia W3 8-inch tablet leaks on Amazon, priced at $380

Unannounced Acer Iconia W3 8inch tablet leaks on Amazon, priced at $380

Acer’s Iconia W3 tablet hasn’t been formally announced, but that hasn’t stopped Amazon from giving the TBA product a shiny new home on its website. The page appears to be a bit incomplete, with the summary listing an “1.5 GHz Apple A4” in the processor field, which we can’t imagine is correct. The product description below might be a bit more on point, though. There you’ll find a dual-core Atom Z2760 processor, an 8.1-inch 1280 x 800-pixel CrystalBrite LCD display, integrated graphics with 64MB of memory, 32 gigs of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, 2-megapixel front- and rear-facing cameras, and a two-cell 3,500mAh battery, keeping the Windows 8 tab powered for up to 8 hours. There’s no word on when the 1.1-pound slate is set to ship (or when it’ll make an official debut, for that matter), but assuming the Amazon web producers have managed to input pricing info correctly, you’ll be able to pick one up for $380 sometime in the future.

[Thanks, Jake]

Call of Duty: Ghosts already best-selling game on Amazon

It’s been less than a day since Activision and Infinity Ward officially announced their next Call of Duty installment, titled Call of Duty: Ghosts, but it’s already the best-selling video game on Amazon right now. The online retailer began pre-orders yesterday, and it’s already on top in several countries.

According to Amazon’s Best Sellers list in the video game category, the game is in third place behind PSN and Xbox Live memberships. Thus, Call of Duty: Ghosts is the best-selling video game on the website. The game leads in the Xbox 360 category and comes in second place in the PS3 category behind BioShock Infinite. Sadly, it’s a no show on Amazon’s Best Seller list for PC games, but that could change.

As for the UK, Call of Duty: Ghosts takes the number one and two spots with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, respectively. While many people would argue that the Call of Duty series is quickly dying, it seems many gamers are still loyal to the series, and want to continue on with the story that each game extends on.

We’ll get our first look at the new game on May 21, when Activision and Infinity Ward will make an appearance at Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox unveil, which confirms that we’ll see Call of Duty: Ghosts come to next-gen consoles like the rumored Xbox 720 and the recently-announced PlayStation 4 from Sony.

IDC: Android topped tablet share in Q1 at 57 percent, Apple led manufacturers

IDC Android topped tablet share in Q1 at 57 percent, Apple still the top manufacturer

We were expecting a changing of the guard among tablets given the rise of several competitors throughout in 2012, and we’ve seen just that in IDC’s market share estimates for the first quarter of 2013. The research firm shows Android having almost reversed the share it held a year ago, claiming the top spot at 56.5 percent; Apple’s huge spike in year-over-year iPad sales wasn’t enough to keep it from dipping to 39.6 percent. Microsoft’s estimated performance tells a more complex story, however. Its second quarter of Windows 8 and RT sales involved a big year-to-year jump as well, but it was also starting largely from scratch — the combined Windows platform was still tiny at 3.7 percent.

The pecking order remained mostly the same among individual manufacturers, although the charts here explain just why OS share shifted so much in the winter. While Apple remained comfortably in front with its 39.6 percent, just about every rival made a dent: Samsung, ASUS, Amazon and Microsoft all gained at least a small amount, even if no one manufacturer posed a major threat. IDC is providing shipping numbers that don’t necessarily reflect the on-the-ground sales, especially when everyone beyond Apple declines to report official numbers, but they suggest that tablets like the Nexus 7 and Surface Pro have found at least a small audience.

iPad Mini Said To Have Led iPad Shipments In Previous Quarter

iPad Mini Said To Have Led iPad Shipments In Previous Quarter

Last year Apple finally released the iPad mini. This tablet was rumored for quite some time and it was believed that Apple was releasing it just so it could establish a footing in the mid-range tablet market. That particular niche of the global tablet market is largely dominated by Android tablets manufactured by a number of companies, including Amazon and Google/Asus. According to a new report from Digitimes, their unnamed sources claim that 64% of all iPad shipments in the previous quarter were courtesy of iPad mini.

Apple is also rumored to be working on two new models of iPad mini, which will be released this year. Recently we heard rumors about a cheaper iPad mini, which wouldn’t bring a new display technology, but would come with a relatively low price tag of $200. The Retina display iPad mini is expected to be released this fall and will probably retain the current price point of this tablet. If the iPad mini indeed led iPad shipments last quarter, perhaps it could be due to the fact that Apple has traditionally released new iPads in March, and prospective customers might have held off their purchases in anticipation of a new model. What do you think?

Kindle iOS App Caters For The Visually Impaired

Kindle iOS App Caters For The Visually ImpairedIt was just last week when we brought you word that Amazon has updated their native Kindle for Android app, and so I guess it is only fair that folks who are using iOS-powered devices too, would be on the receiving end of such an update. In fact, it is said that the latest update to the Kindle iOS app from Amazon (which plays nice on the iPhone and iPad, of course) would bring along with it a slew of new features that will cater for both blind and visually impaired users.

Chances are most folks would pick the ability of the new Kindle iOS app version to read aloud from over 1.8 million Kindle Store titles the biggest difference in this app update. This is made possible thanks to assistance from Apple’s VoiceOver technology, and this particular update would also bring along with it better library and book navigation and search, in addition to other features such as notes, highlights, bookmarks, font size, background color and brightness.

Kindle iOS app gets a slew of new features for the blind and visually impaired

The latest upgrade to the iPhone and iPad version of Amazon’s Kindle reading app brings a bunch of new features aimed at blind and visually impaired users. At the top of the list is the ability to read aloud 1.8 million Kindle Store titles, with help from Apple’s VoiceOver technology. The update also brings better library and book navigation and search, as well as features like notes, highlights, bookmarks, font size, background color and brightness. Standard Kindle features like X-Ray, End Actions and sharing via Facebook and Twitter are also made more accessible through the update. Amazon’s promised a similar update for non-iOS versions of the app at some point in the future — in the meantime, a full list of new features can be found in a press release after the break.

Amazon updates Lovefilm Instant with PS3 HD streaming, improved search

Amazon has started rolling out a new version of Lovefilm Instant on the Playstation 3 in the UK and Germany, with new countries and platforms to follow. The update brings a better search engine and recommendations, along with a new Watchlist feature and revised UI that lets you track content currently being watched via the homepage. Viewers in the launch countries will also notice another welcome change: they can finally watch TV and movies in HD on the PS3. There’s no word on exactly when other Instant platforms will see the upgrade, but we’re assured it will get to everyone “in the future.”

Amazon LOVEFiLM PS3 on-demand app tweaked with Watchlist and HD

Amazon’s new LOVEFiLM app has made its debut, with PS3 owners the first to experience the streaming media service’s new search, recommendation, and watchlist UI on their consoles. The update – which will eventually be pushed out to all LOVEFiLM Instant platforms, including Xbox 360, Wii U, and others – now allows subscribers to build out a playlist of titles for those late-night “let’s slump in front of the TV and not have to move to change what’s on” sessions; PS3 owners also get a bonus in the shape of high-definition content support.

PS3GlobalApp

Although watchlist functionality has been present for Netflix US on-demand subscribers for some time, the ability to create a playlist has been largely absent outside of that country. In the UK, for instance, Netflix lacks the ability to create a “My Queue” list, despite regular requests from users.

Now, though, LOVEFiLM users in the UK and Germany will be able to line up a number of shows to watch, with the list synchronized across all apps and sites that are logged into the same account. There’s also a new homepage layout, which includes a “last viewed” widget with details on what was last played, what device played it, and what viewing point was reached, making it easier to resume.

Otherwise, there’s new search functionality and an updated recommendation engine, and LOVEFiLM has tweaked the UI in general to make things easier to navigate. The new PS3 app is available now, though LOVEFiLM hasn’t said when exactly those with other internet-connected devices will get it.
