iPhone 5S production this month for fall release, says analyst

We wouldn’t be too surprised if Apple launched a new iPhone later in the fall, but the start of production for the new device could let us in on when we might expect the iPhone 5S to officially arrive. It’s said that production of the next-generation iPhone will begin sometime this month, with a launch date sometime in September or October.

iphone_5_silver_0-580x422

According to Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek, Apple will begin production of the iPhone 5S towards the end of this month with a release in the fall. This goes right alongside reports that recently stated that Foxconn was on a hiring spree due to ramped up production, meaning that a new iPhone was about to begin its journey through the factory floor.

Furthermore, Misek expects shipments in the fall quarter to reach between 25 million and 30 million iPhones, and then the holiday time period will see between 50 million and 55 million units shipped for the Cupertino-based company. These numbers aren’t too far-fetched, but Misek isn’t making any original ground-breaking predictions either.

Of course, we would take these predictions from Misek with a grain of salt. This is the same analyst who predicted that iPhone 5S production would begin in March with a June or July release window. He’s also the one that predicted very generous stock prices for the company back in May.

The iPhone 5S is tipped to come with a faster processor, a better camera, and maybe even a fingerprint scanner. The overall design of the phone may stay the same, with only internal design changes being made for the 5S model. This is what the company has done for the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 3GS, and we wouldn’t expect that to change soon.

Apple “killer iOS app” tipped with new web-based service

Like sands in the hour glass, these are today’s Apple tips and leaks – starting with an analyst note passed on after a meeting with Apple executives, chock-full of suggestions for the future of the company. First off, it would appear that Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty has made it clear that Apple may be releasing a new “killer iOS app” later this year. Before we go any further, it’s important that we all pause and read the two most important words read thus far: analyst and “may”.

applefuture

While there’s no reason to think Huberty didn’t meet with Apple executives recently, the fact that the notes she’s passed on are all tied to “could” and “is believed to” and “may” should give you a clue to how much was actually revealed to her. With that in mind, feel free to go wild with acceptance and faith in the possibilities!

“We believe Apple could charge either developers or users for some of these services, which could boost Apple’s annuitized revenue stream and better monetize its large user base. For example, Apple could offer a streaming music service using a freemium model.” – Huberty

You’ll find Apple being suggested to create an internet-based service the likes of which could be a music service by the name of “iRadio” and might be working on deals with Warner Music and Universal Music Group as we speak. Also suggested once again is the iPhone 5S along with distribution plans for NTT Docomo in Japan and China Mobile (in China).

The “killer iOS app” spoken about by Huberty has been described as quite possibly as important as Apple’s adoption of Siri with the iPhone 4S. This could be the introduction of mobile payments, integration being started already with the app Passbook brought fourth in iOS 5. Conflicting reports in the past have suggested Apple’s inclusion of an NFC payment system in the next generation of iPhone products as well.

Sound realistic to you? How about that multi-colored plastic iPhone, eh? Have a peek at some other recent Apple tips and suggestions in the timeline below, and let us know what you think!

BlackBerry Z10 sales estimates cut significantly

While the BlackBerry Z10 released among a crowd of curious and eager onlookers, most of which were excited to see BlackBerry’s newest offerings, the general public doesn’t seem to be too crazy about the new Z10 according to Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley, who cut the sales forecast of BlackBerry’s new smartphone from 1.75 million units to just 300,000.

Blackberry-Z10-costs-about-154-to-make

Walkley trimmed his estimates based on mixed initial sales of the Z10 along with a later-than-expected launch in the US. Currently, the Z10 is only available in Canada and the UK, with a US launch on all major carriers sometime next month. However, once the Z10 launches in the US, Walkley isn’t expecting a lot of reception, saying that he anticipates carriers to not have large inventories of the device.

BlackBerry announced the Z10 earlier this month on February 5, where the company also introduced the Q10, which is another new touchscreen smartphone but with a physical keyboard on board. These two phones, along with the new BlackBerry 10 operating system, are the company’s answers to moving their business forward and attempt to bounce back from six straight quarters of losses.

Of course, Walkley mentioned that BlackBerry still faces stiff competition from iOS and Android this year. Both Apple and Samsung will most likely launch new smartphones this year: the rumored iPhone 5S and the Galaxy S IV, both of which are said to be arriving with some pretty mean features on board.

Samsung To Build 100M Galaxy S4 Handsets [Analyst]

Samsung To Build 100M Galaxy S4 Handsets [Analyst]

This is concept art

It’s the season for market Analysts to help their clients position their portfolios and Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek (the analyst  who came out with a number of such prediction about Apple yesterday) is said to have  told his clients that Samsung is prepared to build a record 100 million Galaxy S4 (or Galaxy SIV or Galaxy Next, there is no official name). Interestingly, he also mentions that components suppliers that Samsung shares with Apple could come under manufacturing capacity pressure and may have to make a tough choice between which client to satisfy: Samsung or Apple.

So far, both companies have been doing a great job at building a record number of handsets, but Apple has already reported that some of its iPhone handset came under manufacturing pressure, which slightly affected last quarter’s numbers. Yet, those  constraint are typically a “good problem” to have, and there is no doubt that HTC or Nokia wouldn’t mind having those  right now. There is no official Samsung Galaxy S4 specifications yet, but at this point, they are speculated to look like this: 5″ Super-AMOLED display (1920×1080, full HD) , 13 Megapixel camera, wireless charging, Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor with 2GB of RAM. It looks like this year will be more competitive than ever, and that’s how we like it as consumers.

iPhone 5S coming in June 2013 according to analyst

While the iPhone has seen yearly updates for the past several years, it’s rumored that might change with the next iPhone model. According to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, the iPhone 5S will be released in June or July of 2013. This is similar to other reports that we’ve heard that suggest Apple is moving to a 6-month update cycle.

So what can we expect with the iPhone 5S according to Misek? He says that, based on the team’s checks, the iPhone 5S will likely “include a new super HD camera/screen, a better battery, and NFC. Possible updates include an IGZO screen for Retina+, 128GB storage, and coming in 6 to 8 colors.”

These are certainly upgrades that would go a little further than what we’ve seen in the past with minor upgrades to the 4S from the 4, and the 3GS from the 3G. However, we’d assume that Apple will keep the same body style based on leaks that we saw last week, when the alleged back plate of the iPhone 5S leaked.

Misek also brought up the iPhone 6 — the iPhone that would come after the 5S. He says that several prototypes are “floating around”, one of which has a 4.8″ screen. That prototype has a Retina+ IGZO screen, a new A7 quad-core processor, and “a new form factor with no home button”, which could mean full gesture control. Obviously, that’s a long way off, but if Apple turns to a 6-month upgrade cycle, we could see the iPhone 6 in about a year or so.

IDC: Samsung and Apple still kings of the smartphone market, Nokia loses top five spot to RIM

IDC Samsung and Apple still kings of the smartphone market, Nokia loses top five spot to RIM

IDC’s third quarter figures are in, complete with a few unexpected shake-ups. The entire cellphone market grew 2.4% over the same time last year, but smartphones drove the majority of that, showing growth of 45.3% and beating the analysts’ expectations. Of the 179.7 million smartphones shipped, Samsung and Apple devices accounted for almost half of them, with the companies retaining their number one and two positions in the market, respectively. IDC notes that iPhone shipments didn’t increase, but this is somewhat expected given the latest iteration was released only a short time before the end of the quarter. What we find particularly interesting is that Nokia was ousted from the top five smartphone players and replaced by RIM. Whether Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices will put it back in contention remains to be seen, as does the effect BB10 and RIM’s new handsets will have on the market. ZTE finished fourth in the list thanks to increased sales in North America, with HTC rounding up the top five vendors with continued uptake of its power devices. With a bunch of new handsets coming to the table and the holiday season fast approaching, look out for even more surprises in the fourth quarter numbers, due early next year.

Gartner and IDC: PC shipments tumbled over 8 percent in Q3, only ASUS and Lenovo escaped unhurt

Gartner and IDC PC shipments tumbled over 8 percent in Q3, only ASUS and Lenovo escaped unhurt

We don’t often summarize market share in one word, but: ouch. Both Gartner and IDC have trotted out their preliminary estimates for PC market share in the third quarter, and the two agree that this summer was a dire one for the traditional computer. Outside of ASUS and Lenovo, whose price-focused strategies and key acquisitions kept them ahead of rivals, virtually every major vendor saw its PC shipments collapse versus a year ago, often by more than 10 percent. Total worldwide shipments declined by more than 8 percent in either estimate — enough to make a flat second quarter seem rosy by comparison. Lenovo took the top spot in Gartner’s study, although IDC is counting workstations and kept HP in its usual lead.

As for the US, it’s almost better that we don’t look. Gartner and IDC believe that the American market sank by respective 13.8 or 12.4 percent amounts, and the steep global declines repeated themselves in the one country for everyone but Lenovo. Even a market share gain for Apple came only because its shipments dropped at a gentler rate than most of its peers. Whether it’s the US or worldwide, don’t assume that inventory clearances ahead of Windows 8 were the only factors at work, though. Both research teams point to continuing world economic troubles as influences, and IDC contends that buyers are still skipping PCs in favor of smartphones and mobile tablets. There’s often a jump in computer sales between the summer and the fall, especially with a new OS on the way, but we wouldn’t count on a return to the halcyon days.

Gartner reports Western Europe desktop shipments down, portable PCs up in Q2 2012

Gartner reports Western Europe desktop shipments down, portable PCs up in Q2 2012

When it comes to technology and the end of a financial quarter, you can bet your wage there’ll be an analyst report or two letting you what’s what. And according to Gartner’s latest estimates for Western Europe, PCs didn’t fare too well in Q2 of this year, with a 2.4 percent decrease in shipments compared with the same period in 2011. Consignments of mobile PCs (read: not tablets) grew by 4 percent, while desktops floundered, dropping 12.8 percent. Of this, a minor growth of 0.4 percent was recorded in consumer PCs, while the professional market decreased by 5.3 percent. Among the big hitters, HP remained at the top of the pile despite losing some market share, and Acer remained in second position with a mild increase in the same. ASUS put in a healthy performance, moving the company up to bronze medal position, while Dell dropped off the podium to fourth. The vendor statistics for the whole region were echoed in France in Germany, but during the quarter Apple managed to break into the top five in the UK market. Meike Escherich, principal analyst at Gartner, attributes the overall performance to economic uncertainty in the region, as well as lackluster demand in the wait for Windows 8 machines. We don’t want to spoil all the fun, so a comprehensive breakdown of the numbers awaits you at the source link.

Canalys: PC and tablet shipments hit new high in Q2 with Apple in the lead, HP next in line

Canalys PC and tablet shipments hit new high in Q2 with Apple in the lead, HP next in line

Wondering how the industry fared in the second quarter of 2012? Shipments in the PC sector, which in Canalys’ book includes tablets, were higher than ever, totaling 108,708,780 units globally. iPad sales put Apple in the lead, with more than 21 million devices shipped (this figure also includes desktops and notebooks) in Q2, compared to just over 13 million during the year-ago quarter, representing a massive 59.6-percent year-over-year growth. HP, which led the way in Q1, has fallen to the second-place spot, with nearly 13.6 million shipments during the quarter ending yesterday, followed by Lenovo with about 13.2 million, Acer with nearly 10.7 million and Dell with roughly 9.7 computers sold. Manufacturers like ASUS and Samsung are represented in the substantial “others” category, which totals about 40.6 million devices. There’s no question that the iPad is behind Apple earning the number-1 slot, and with the upcoming Windows 8 launch, those figures could shift drastically the next time around. Click on through to the source link below for the full Canalys breakdown.

Analysts predict 6.5m Galaxy S IIIs sold in Q2 ’12

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S III in Europe and the United States, with the device poised to be one of the most popular smartphones this year. Analysts at JPMorgan believe that Samsung has managed to sell around 6.5 million Galaxy S IIIs over the second quarter, and they’re predicting that the South Korean company will shift up to 15 million between July and September.

On top of that, analysts believe Samsung has sold around 50 million smartphones in the second quarter alone, putting the company comfortably ahead of Apple’s estimated 30 million iPhone sales. For reference, Apple managed to sell 37.million iPhones in the first quarter of this year, while Samsung sold around 41 million smartphones.

The Galaxy S III recently launched on all major carriers in the United States, featuring a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED 720p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, 2GB of RAM, an eight megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, and a microSD card slot. NFC support is also onboard, and depending on which carrier you choose you’ll get LTE connectivity too. Shipments for the Verizon version of the phone have been delayed slightly, but the carrier says everything should be back on track starting from today.
