Square Motorola Android slider leaks out, causes consternation

We swear we’ve seen a Motorola phone that looks like this odd square thing before, but it’s also possible we’re crazy. Either way, it looks like Moto’s working on a new Blur set running Android 2.1, and if you thought screen size and resolution issues differences were a big part of Android fragmentation before, well, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Oh, and as for the story that this pic came from a student who borrowed the phone from a friend whose dad works for Moto? We’d be more skeptical, except that’s exactly how we’ve gotten other dead-on Moto leaks. So… yeah. Anyway, a square Moto slider running Blur. Does that do anything for anyone? No? Okay.

Samsung Moment 2 with Sprint branding and TouchWiz 3.0 peeks out

The Samsung Moment is due to get Android 2.1 sometime in the near future, but it looks like it’s also going to get a bit of a refresh — check out this pic of a Sprint-branded Moment 2 that’s said to have TouchWiz 3.0 on top of Android 2.1. Unfortunately, the same source says this thing doesn’t have Sammy’s new Super AMOLED screen, so we’d assume it doesn’t have that new faster processor from the Galaxy S either — all of which means the HTC EVO 4G is still really the Sprint device to wait for. But hey, maybe you love TouchWiz? Is that a thing? It’s hard to say what the kids are into nowadays.

LG LU2300 Android handset gets photos, ‘April or May’ release date?

Actual, honest-to-goodness photos of what is presumably the Korea-only LG LU2300 handset popped up on a site in the SK recently, and like a family pet that plays professional sports (guess who watched Air Bud last night?) it’s certainly captured the imagination of the Android-lovin’ world at large. The thing is said to sport a 3.5-inch (800 x 480) AMOLED capacitive touch screen, Android 2.1, landscape mode slide keyboard, support for DivX files, a 5 megapixel (720p video) camera with geo-tagging, WiFi, GPS, DMB tuner and — last but not least — a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The stats are consistent with what we’ve heard before, and now we have a possible release date: April or May. What we don’t have, however, is any reason to believe rumors that this is going to be released in the states as the C710 Aloha. Although we might be skeptical, we understand the inherent wish-fulfillment: this is one sexy phone, and we’d certainly like to see it become available here. HTC Desire review

Following the Legend, HTC continues its Android 2.1 lineup with the Desire — a gorgeous cousin of the renowned Nexus One. We can trace our drool all the way back to the Desire’s leak in December, but there have been some changes since then that made it slightly less desirable — DivX support and 720p video capture never made it to the final build, but it’s not like the company laid down any official promise on them, right? Anyhow, there’s still plenty to be loved here, namely the speedy 1GHz Snapdragon, the large AMOLED screen, and HTC’s latest revision of Sense UI that we’ve already seen on the Legend. Now, there are probably two questions floating in the minds of our readers: is the Desire worth the extra moola over the Legend? And is it any better than the Nexus One? Let’s all find out together.

Droid mercifully gets a manual 2.1 update option

As is pleasantly often the case with Android devices, it turns out there’s already a quick, easy, nearly painless way to circumvent the phased rollout of Android 2.1 to Verizon’s Droids out in the field. Anyone who’s already been through this will feel right at home with the process: grab the binary straight from Google (so you know it’s legit, which is always nice), rename the file, transfer it to your microSD card, and reboot to the recovery mode screen. The rest is pretty self-evident, and when all is said and done, you’ll have a Droid equipped with the very latest and greatest that Google has to offer. Let us know how it goes, y’hear?

Samsung Galaxy S Pro to come with a QWERTY keyboard in June, says Eldar Murtazin

Those whispers you might have heard of a Pro version of Samsung’s delectable Galaxy S have just turned into a booming roar, thanks to Eldar Murtazin apparently confirming the existence and prospective arrival of the rumored handset. According to the legendarily loquacious mobile reviewer, Samsung will be strapping a QWERTY keyboard onto the already potent Galaxy S hardware and upping the pricing ante with an extra €50 (about $67) charge. He also manages to give us a June launch date, but pictures of this device are predictably not yet available. We’ll just have to let our imagination do the work until Mr. Blurrycam gets on the case. Update: HDblog.it has thrown up a pretty realistic (though fake) render of the rumored model, and if the real thing is anything like this, Sammy might have a contender on its hands. Now we sit and wait for June, eh?

Verizon begins Android 2.1 update rollout for Motorola Droid

Flippin’ finally, right? Verizon Wireless put the long-awaited Android 2.1 update on hold for its cadre of Motorola Droid owners earlier in the month, with an all-too-vague “TBD” as the only detail as to when we could look for it to actually, really land. We’ve just happened upon what looks to be an internal Verizon email that went out this morning, and sure enough, it sounds as if the update will at long last begin hitting Droid owners in just a few minutes. At noon on 3/30 (that’s today, vaquero), a grand total of 1,000 users will receive notification of the update, while 9,000 more will get a similar alert just before midnight. If all goes well, the rest of ya will see v2.1 slide down starting on Thursday, though it looks as if patience will be your only friend as you await your turn. Head on past the break for the full memo, but don’t get your hopes up too high — wouldn’t want to be let down again, would you buttercup?

European Milestone gets OTA 2.1 update, Droid update MIAMotorola Milestone owners, your moment is now. The Android 2.1 update you’ve been waiting for is now available en masse. Users outside of Hong Kong (which already got served) have received notice that an over-the-air update is available to unlock the nine home-screens, Google Earth, and other goodness that comes along with the latest flavor of Google’s mobile OS. When can US-bound Verizon subscribers hope to get their point release of goodness? That, sadly, is still TBD, but we’re guessing it’ll be any day now.

HTC Desire turning Japanese with SoftBank in late April

The HTC Desire is spreading its wings today with the announcement of a distribution deal with Japan’s SoftBank. One of the big heavies over on that most famous archipelago, SoftBank will carry a WCDMA version of the handset with the standard Android 2.1 with Sense software and brownish externals. Sorry to disappoint our dear readers yearning for a silver or black option. Maybe in the future, eh? We don’t know what reaction to expect from the Japanese audience, but we suspect the language of effortless responsiveness and snazzy AMOLED screens will prove to be universally understood.

HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 on April 26th in home country of Taiwan

We’re past mid-March and rapidly approaching the early Q2 launch estimates for the Android 2.1 update for HTC’s Hero. Now Engadget Chinese has tipped us to an official HTC release date issued on Plurk (a very popular, local Twitter-like social service) in HTC’s home country of Taiwan: April 26th. So we should see the update go hot globally, with the latest version of the Sense UI in tow, at about the same time. You know, if you haven’t grown tired of waiting and already hacked it in.
