Cast Screen Button Appears In Android Quick Settings For Some

It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see Chromecast creep deeper into Google’s mobile ecosystem. The $35 dongle instantly became a hit when it was released late last year, with Google selling “millions” of units in the U.S. alone. Earlier this week it finally released Chromecast in nearly a dozen international markets. Some Android users, who have newer Motorola or Nexus devices, report that a “Cast Screen” button is showing up in Quick Settings. It doesn’t do anything right now, but its possible that the feature is incomplete at this stage.

In most cases, users who have spotted this button are running Android 4.4 KitKat. Moreover, it seems to appear if certain Chromecast enabled apps are launched, such as AllCast. No one has been able to make sense of what it actually does, presumably its triggering an incomplete casting feature, but as of now this native screen casting feature hasn’t been made able to work.

It possible that further down the road Google might allow users to mirror their Android display to a TV through Chromecast. While there are solutions available to do that, nevertheless a universal casting trigger will eliminate the need for third party apps or standalone apps that beam local content to Chromecast. We’ll have to wait and see if and when this feature is completed.

PhoneJoy Android Gaming Controller Starts Shipping

Back at the end of 2012, I mentioned a company had created an interesting game controller for Android smartphones and small tablets called the PhoneJoy. The controller turned up on Kickstarter and raised about $70,000 within a few months to come to market. Now over a year after the controller hit Kickstarter, the PhoneJoy is finally shipping.

The controller is shipping to Kickstarter backers right now. If you didn’t back the Kickstarter campaign, but want your own PhoneJoy, the controller is available to pre-order for $79.90(USD) and will ship starting on April 8. It will later be available on Newegg, Amazon and other sites.

The controller is designed to slide apart and allow the phone to be placed between the two halves of the controller, and can work in either landscape or portrait modes. It works with most smartphones, regardless of size, and even can handle 7-inch tablets. It has dual analog sticks, a D-pad, and multiple buttons. When not in use, it folds down to be about the size of a typical wallet.

According to its maker, there are already hundreds of games which will work with the controller out of the box.
