CyanogenMod Launches GalleryNext
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe CyanogenMod team developers the most popular custom Android ROMs, they are used by millions of people around the world who want a different experience on their Android devices. These AOSP based ROMs bring a lot of features that are otherwise not present on stock or even OEM modified Android iterations. Moreover, ROMs are often swiftly updated with new features, which means that they almost always have something new to offer. CyanogenMod today launched GalleryNext on the Play Store, its their new software that seeks to revamp the built-in image gallery that ships with their ROMs.
The team believes that the current AOSP Gallery shipping with its ROMs is “severely lacking,” and it has addressed this with GalleryNext. Available in beta, the new app brings all pictures in one centralized location and offers integration with a plethora of cloud services such as Dropbox, Flickr, Picasa and Facebook. It also touts Moments support, which automatically classifies and groups media based on meta data. GalleryNext also supports video playback and GIF, along with deduplication in ‘All’ view and more. Upcoming features include editor support and implement of Android 4.4 KitKat’s immersive mode user interface. Since this is a beta release, there might be a few bugs here and there, which will be taken care of in the subsequent updates. To download GalleryNext, join CyanogenMod’s Google+ community and then proceed to the Play Store.

Earlier this week Microsoft launched its new iOS app for the Xbox Music streaming service. The new update brought one major feature, the ability to play music offline. This was welcome news for those who signed up for Xbox Music Pass, as they can now access their songs even when they’re not connected to the internet. Microsoft has now added the feature in the Xbox Music app for Android as well. The update, released today, comes with support for offline playback of playlists. Previously both apps required users to be constantly connected to the internet if they wanted to stream music.
Turning on this feature isn’t that hard. A toggle is displayed on each playlist through which users can decide which playlist is to be made available for offline listening. Its actually quite similar to the way playlists are pinned in Google Play Music. Once done, the entire playlist is available for offline streaming, allowing users to listen to their music even if they’re on board a plane or simply somewhere where there is no internet, even in these modern times, that can happen quite frequently. The updated Xbox Music app for Android is available as a free download, it is live now on the Google Play Store.

One of the reasons why BlackBerry’s handsets have been struggling in the market is because there’s a significant “app gap.” Consumers have come to expect unimaginable numbers of apps at their fingertips, which can easily be found on iOS and Android. Other platforms like BlackBerry and even Windows Phone are trying hard to catch up, but there’s still a significant gap to be covered. It seems that BlackBerry might be placing a bet on Android, while it has no plans of launching Android powered smartphones, its BlackBerry World app repository may soon start accepting apps developed for Google’s mobile operating system.
The upcoming BB OS 10.2.1 update, a major update that’s set to bring new features, is expected to add a new section to BB World where all native Android applications will be listed. The Android runtime is also expected to be upgraded, meaning that users will be able to run newer apps as well. It has been rumored that BlackBerry has been courting developers to upload their Android apps on to BB World, this according to Good e-Reader, which claims to have heard this from a few game developers at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014 last week in Las Vegas. BlackBerry is expected to release the OS 10.2.1 update in the coming months.
