Opera Max Beta App Launched For Android Users

Opera Max Beta App Launched For Android UsersOpera has been around for quite some time already where Web browsers are concerned, whether they are on the mobile platform or otherwise. Their mobile browsers are also pretty popular because they are able to compress data, but this has become not as useful as before considering how smartphones have continued to move forward in their evolution, and data is pretty much cheap these days. After all, most of us do use our smartphones to stream music, download as well as upload stuff, check out social networks on the go, among others.

Opera has recently introduced a new beta Android app that they have called Opera Max, where it will be able to compress the majority of the information that goes through the device, regardless of whether they are images, videos or music. This is made possible thanks to Opera’s setting up of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) which will be able to measure the amount of data that goes through your device, where these data requests will then be sent through Opera’s servers. It remains to be seen just how much data will be saved eventually, but why not give it a go for a month and see where else you can put the saved data to good use? [Press Release]

XOLO Launches $150+ Windows Phone Devices Next Year

XOLO Launches $150+ Windows Phone Devices Next Year

In the battle of the most popular mobile operating systems, Windows Phone appears to have cemented its third position. As it looks to challenge iOS and Android in the future, Microsoft needs more hardware partners who develop WP devices. When it announced its acquisition of Nokia’s hardware and devices division, many feared that the deal wouldn’t go down well with its OEMs. However there still exists interest, as China’s ZTE has committed to developing WP devices in 2014. India’s XOLO has confirmed its commitment as well, promising Windows Phone devices next year that will cost between $150-$300, the ideal price points for its local market.

XOLO already develops and sells affordably priced Android devices in India. The company’s co-founder tells The Economic Times of India that pricing of its upcoming Windows Phone devices won’t be much different from its Android lineup. XOLO will become the first local manufacturer in India to develop a Windows Phone smartphone, it aims to release the first device early next quarter. The co-founder agrees that there is an ecosystem cost that they’ll have to pay to jump on the Windows Phone bandwagon. However manufacturers like XOLO might be in luck. Microsoft is reportedly considering waiving Windows Phone licensing fees for OEMs, which will no doubt be an added incentive for such manufacturers to produce more and more WP devices.

Samsung HomeSync Now Supports Android Devices From Other OEMs

Samsung HomeSync Now Supports Android Devices From Other OEMs

Samsung announced the HomeSync earlier this year but it didn’t immediately reveal the pricing and availability details. It then dropped off the radar before appearing on Samsung’s website back in August. Finally in October Samsung started shipping the $299 HomeSync in the U.S. Through the device users can sync content to their TVs using the Korean manufacturer’s mobile devices. Samsung has announced that it is removing this restriction and opening up HomeSync to Android devices from other OEMs.

Packing a 1.7GHz quadcore processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB flash storage and 1TB hard drive, the HomeSync is much powerful than your average set-top box. HDMI, USB 3.0, microUSB and support for standard audio and video codecs is present. Users also have full access to the Google Play Store, Samsung Apps, Media Hub, Video Hub and YouTube. Those who don’t to stream content can store it on the 1TB HDD, now all these features have been opened up to non-Samsung Android powered devices. The app is available right now through Google Play Store, however only a handful of Android devices from other manufacturers are supported at this point in time. It may take some time before HomeSync becomes compatible with all devices, regardless of their position in the global smartphone market.
