Google Science Fair 2013 came to a close yesterday, as 15 young scientists aged between 13 and 18 demonstrated their projects in front of Google’s expert panel. With over a thousand submissions worldwide, only four entrants were able to take home prizes, but it was 17-year-old Eric Chen who walked away with the biggest prize. By combining computer modeling and biological studies, Chen’s research focused on leads for a “new type of anti-flu medicine” to help fight the spread of the influenza virus. Australian Viney Kumar and Canadian Ann Makosinski took home awards for an early warning app for oncoming emergency vehicles and a flashlight that operates without batteries or moving parts, respectively. This year, voters got the chance to affect the outcome, awarding a new prize to Elif Bilgin, from Istanbul, who showed it was possible to create plastic from banana peel. Each winner took home a trophy built from Lego, as well as prizes from National Geographic and Scientific American. Chen, however, walked away with a $50,000 scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos Islands and his school gets both $10,000 and a Hangout with the boffins at CERN. Well deserved, we’d say.

Major League Baseball has updated the MLB.com At Bat app to both support Apple’s new software and introduce host of postseason-friendly features. Sports fans can now watch live Wild Card games, division playoffs and National League championships from multiple camera angles. The updated app also brings a full suite of postseason info, complete with dedicated news and stat sections. Not everyone is happy with Cyanogen as a company. Guillaume Lesniak, the creator of CyanogenMod’s Focal camera app, doesn’t like that licensing changes accompanying the new venture would limit his control. Accordingly, he has just removed Focal from CyanogenMod and launched it as a standalone beta. The app includes all the features from its ROM days, including burst shooting, a panorama mode and an equivalent to Google’s Photo Sphere. While the release is a mild inconvenience for CyanogenMod users, it’s ultimately a win for anyone who wants to try Focal — they can now give the app a spin regardless of the firmware they use. If you’re wondering what Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, has been up to since he sold the read-it-later service to Betaworks, wonder no more. At the XOXO festival in Portland, OR, Arment announced that he’s been working on a new podcasting app for iOS called Overcast. Why? The tl;dr reason is because “podcasts are awesome” (We can’t say we disagree). The long of it, however, is because as a lover of podcasts, Arment was frustrated at the quality of the podcast apps that are out there, stating that Apple has been asleep at the podcast wheel for years and third-party solutions aren’t that much better. So he’s taken matters into his own hands with Overcast. He’s currently about half-way done with the app and hopes to release it later this year. We don’t really know that much more about it, but if Arment’s previous work is any indication, we have high hopes for this one. In the meantime, you can head on over to Overcast.fm to sign up for updates.

We hope you weren’t scheduling your weekend around the launch of BBM for Android and iOS, as BlackBerry has paused the rollout following a leak of the Android version. There were too many simultaneous users, the company says; with over 1.1 million active clients in the first eight hours, the messaging service just wasn’t ready to handle the load. There’s no mention of when the BBM deployment will continue, although BlackBerry is disabling the unofficial Android build to prevent future problems. Unless you grabbed BBM’s iOS version in the first several hours, you’ll just have to be patient.

Streaming Thundercats to your iDevice with Lovefilm is all well and good, but what if you wanted to watch it on a bigger screen? Well, now you can, assuming you use Apple TV: the app’s latest update has added AirPlay support. The refreshed app also tacks on Watchlist management and IMDb integration, much like the update Amazon (Lovefilm’s parent company) brought to its Instant Video app earlier this month. Just like that, Apple faithful have another video option to choose from. Now if you’ll excuse us, we have some catching up to do with Lion-o.
