TiVo Mini DVR extenders suddenly add Netflix streaming, Amazon coming soon?

TiVo Mini DVR extenders suddenly add Netflix app, Amazon may be coming soon

While we enjoyed our time with the TiVo Mini multiroom DVR extender when we reviewed it, we noted several drawbacks including missing apps for Netflix and Amazon Instant Video (Hulu Plus has been present since launch). Both have been supported on standalone TiVos for a long time, but according to user reports Mini owners may finally have access to them. Zatz Not Funny posted the picture above and points out a TiVo Community post where users report icons for both are suddenly appearing on their Minis, although currently only Netflix is working. Forum poster and Engadget reader sbiller reports 1080p streams currently cause the Mini to reboot, so even that app may not be quite ready for prime time. Whatever the case, it should be active so if that’s been stopping you from adding a Mini to your setup it may be time to reconsider, or re-reconsider.

Twitter #Music iOS app updated with discovery features, additional languages

Twitter Music iOS app updated with discovery features, additional languages

Twitter’s Music app for iOS just scored a few more features aimed at helping you discover new tracks, and, if you happen to hail from a handful of European countries, allowing you to navigate in your native tongue. Version 1.2 now lets you quickly jump to an artist’s top tracks, locate similar tunes, and, as a pretty nifty affiliate perk, jump to the musicians that artists follow on Twitter. There’s now also an option to scan your iPhone’s music library in order to recommend relevant tracks, and you can quickly access a list of musical groups that you’ve tweeted about in the past. Finally, the pièce de résistance — for foreign users, at least — is an option to use the app in a variety of European languages, including French, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Italian. Molto Buono.

Google’s One Today donation app exits pilot mode as more charities are invited to sign up

Google's One Today donation app exits pilot mode as more charities are invited to sign up

Right around a month ago, Google opened up the flood gates and let any US-based Android user download its One Today app — a program that makes it wildly simple to donate a dollar (or more, of course) to a different charity each day. Now, Google is officially releasing the entire project from pilot mode, inviting the masses to both download the app (still US-only, unfortunately) and get their charities into the ‘Google for Nonprofits’ database.

Signing up for One Today is completely free, and Google has provided resources for those looking to get their charity authorized for inclusion. Be aware, however, that Google charges a 1.9 percent processing fee when taking in payments; in other words, each $10 donated translates to $9.81 in usable funds for charities. The real kicker, we’re surmising, is the social tie-in. The more people who donate and then share to various social networks, the more likely their friends and peers are to follow suit. And, ideally, we all join to solve all of the world’s problems.

TripSaver Helps You Stay on Budget While Traveling

I love traveling. Who doesn’t? What I don’t love as much, though, is how I usually go over the budget that I had initially set for myself. Apparently, this is a pretty common problem that most of my travel buddies share.

It’s easy to forget (or ignore) your budget when you’re out and about in a new city. Where can I buy this? Where else can I experience this?, you might think, before handing over your credit card. The full extent of how much you spent usually hits you when you’re back home.

Don’t let this happen to you again. It’s easy to get sidetracked when you’re on vacation, but a tool called TripSaver might just be the thing you need to budget better.

tripsaver app

It’s essentially a travel expense tracker that features a neat and easy-to-use layout. I especially like the counter that shows just how far or how close you already are to spending your daily limit.

All you have to do is fire the app up and enter any expenses you incurred throughout the day. The app draws up attractive pie and bar graphs of your spending so you can gauge your spending quickly and easily.

The TripSaver app is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $1 gives you access to the app before its release (and at half of its $1.99 retail price). TripSaver has already surpassed its funding goal, so it should definitely be released.

Samsung Wallet hits Google Play for select Galaxy devices

Samsung wallet hits Google Play, only select Galaxy devices supported

Samsung’s Wallet app, launched in Beta in the US a few months ago, is now available for wider consumption on Google Play in the US. Despite the name, it doesn’t have Google Wallet-like powers of NFC payment, but works more like Apple’s Passbook app to let you store and categorize tickets, membership cards, coupons and the like. Other functions include time and location-based ticket reminders, a “create my ticket” feature and the ability to receive co-marketing and loyalty card coupons. As you may expect, it’s limited to Samsung devices, and for now the app only runs on the Galaxies S III, S 4, Note and Note II. You may also have trouble finding retailers accepting it, though Samsung said at launch that it would be supported by Walgreens, MLB, Expedia.com, Booking.com, Hotels.com and Lufthansa in the US. If the stars line up and you need something from one of those outfits, are in the US and have the right device, check the source.

KeyMe iOS app photographs your keys and stores them in the cloud

DNP KeyMe for iOS photographs your keys and stores them in the cloud

We’ve all been there. Staring forlornly at a locked door, keyless, with Gandalf’s rumbling voice echoing in our heads, telling us that we would not pass. It’s a sorry sight, and the people behind the iOS app KeyMe are determined to make it a thing of the past. The app (available at the link below) takes photos of your keys and scans them to translate the images into diagrams. If you’ve locked yourself out, you can simply waltz into your local locksmith’s shop with your diagram or find a KeyMe kiosk near you to have an identical key cut. It’s free to store your keys in the cloud, but accessing them comes with a $10 charge (which is pretty small potatoes when you consider the cost of an emergency locksmith). While the app is strictly iOS for now, an Android version is in the works, though KeyMe cautions users not to expect it anytime soon.

Textbooks now available through Google Play Books in US, iOS app updated to match

Google Play Books textbooks

Google promised us that it would offer textbooks through Google Play Books this month, and it’s living up to its word. American students can now buy educational titles or rent them for six months, with prices frequently undercutting paper editions. Appropriately, Google has updated its Google Play Books app for iOS to support rentals like its Android and web counterparts. The launch is a painful reminder that the fall semester is just around the corner, but college-goers who want to be prepared can check out the source links.

Isis Mobile Wallet teams up with American Express for nationwide rollout

DNP American Express Serve comes to Isis Mobile Wallet

Isis is gearing up to expand its Mobile Wallet service nationwide in the coming months, but its plans don’t end there. The company has just announced that it’s teaming up with American Express to bring the latter’s Serve platform to Isis Mobile Wallet. Serve account holders will be able to make use of most of the features they already expect from Amex, like loading cash to their accounts, paying bills electronically and adding funds via direct deposit. By joining up with Isis, Serve is now unlocking the Mobile Wallet’s capabilities, like NFC-powered payments at participating retail locations. Though Isis is currently limited to Austin and Salt Lake City, the company — now with Amex on its side — hopes to reach customers coast to coast before the year is out, though we don’t have a specific date for availability just yet. For more info, check out the press release after the break.
