Mega launches Android app with support for other platforms in the works

Mega – the file-hosting website of Kim Dotcom fame – has announced the arrival of its first mobile app, which is for Android and available now on the Google Play Store. Although neither the iOS nor Windows Phone apps are available, the announcement states they are in “the final stages” and will be launched in the near future.

The app is tied to one’s Mega account, and allows for both uploading and downloading files, promising that it does so quickly in both regards. One particularly nice feature is that it can be synced with the device’s camera for auto cloud storage of videos and photographs that are taken, a nice alternative or secondary backup to shuttling the content off to one’s Google account.

There are image thumbnails, the ability to export and send both folder and file links, as well as editing functions for moving, renaming, and deleting both files and folders. There’s an on-board search function for finding files located within one’s own Mega account, as well. The announcement suggests that more features will be added over time, but what those future features will be is up for speculation.

Those with a Mega account have access to 50GB for free, and as was Dotcom’s professed goal, all content that is uploaded is fully encrypted, with the user retaining the keys to decrypt the files. Such a method aims to thwart law enforcement by making the service raid-proof. This follows the raid on Dotcom’s house, and the ensuing legal fallout that has been ongoing since.

The service was announced back in November, and is a replacement for the now defunct Megaupload, which was pulled last year and replaced with a nifty FBI splash page. The hosting website has servers located in New Zealand and Europe, and Dotcom has been quoted as saying that “every file that is being uploaded to Mega is not just on one server, meaning if one hosting company goes bankrupt then those files will be on least two servers in the world and in two different jurisdictions.”

Kim Dotcom’s Mega launches Android app, vows iOS and Windows apps soon

Mega launches Android app

Kim Dotcom launched his Mega cloud storage platform with much fanfare, but few ways to use it. That’s finally improving now that the Mega Android app is here. The release won’t shock anyone who has used established rivals like Dropbox and Google Drive, but it is reasonably complete with two-way transfers, image previews and automatic camera syncing. It won’t be alone for long, either. Mega says that both iOS and Windows apps are in the last stages of testing, which could give us more of an incentive to try what’s still a very young service.

Flixster for BlackBerry 10 adds UltraViolet movie streaming

Flixster for BlackBerry 10 adds UltraViolet movie streaming

BlackBerry 10 users have had Flixster’s app as a movie guide since January, but they haven’t had the chance to watch their discoveries on the BlackBerry itself. Thankfully, Flixster has provided that missing piece of the puzzle today by adding UltraViolet support (not pictured here). As with Android and iOS, anyone with a BB10 device can now stream videos saved in their UV locker. The upgrade brings regular Flixster accounts, too — members can mark the movies they want to see and review them afterward. Between these two major additions, the new Flixster app is easily worth an update at the source link.

Microsoft kills Facebook, Flickr integration in Windows 8.1 Photos app

Microsoft kills Facebook, Flickr integration in Windows 81 Photos

If you enjoyed Windows 8’s central Photos app that not only stored your local images but also those from other sites, you might be disappointed with Windows 8.1, if a post in Microsoft’s forums is any indication. After a commenter noticed that Facebook and Flickr integration was gone, one of Redmond’s employees said it was no longer necessary since other apps (including one arriving soon from Facebook) can now do that, unlike when Windows 8 was first launched. The spokesperson added that Microsoft “welcome(s) Flickr to do the same” and recommended the People app as another way to “socially engage” with your photos. Subsequent commenters felt differently, with one summing up the sentiment by saying the OS was moving backwards from its Hub pinnings and “forc(ing) you to be app-centric (like Android or iOS) instead of content-centric.”

Nook’s Android app now supports HD magazines on tablets

DNP Nook for Android now supports HD magazines

Next time you fire up the Nook app on your Android tablet, you’ll be able to browse HD magazines — assuming your device has a 1280 x 720 screen. Introduced three months ago on Retina iPads, the feature now jumps to the latest version of the Android app, along with a number of other updates. New magazine titles aside, version 3.4 lets you enlarge book illustrations and adds support for the system’s assistive technology for blind and low-vision users. So, you can go wild with screen magnification on Android 4.2 or higher, or listen to the app speak via TalkBack on 4.1. Meanwhile, the Nook app for iOS comes equipped with bug fixes and a better way to organize books in a series. Sure, these updates don’t bring a bunch of new major features, but they show that Barnes & Noble isn’t likely to axe its mobile apps in the near future like it did the ones for Macs and PCs.

USA Network now lets you watch past episodes on its iOS app

USA network brings Anywhere Plus app to iTunes with cableless viewing for some shows

Like many, many (many) other programmers, NBC Universal’s USA Network has had its own iOS app, USA Anywhere, for quite some time. However, users have been disappointed with the lack of past episode availability, among other foibles, so USA has just taken the wraps off a new app called Anywhere Plus, available for free on iTunes. You’ll now be able to watch all its programs a day after they air and back episodes for certain shows, assuming you’re signed up for the network with a cable provider. Even if you’re not, selected episodes are now available along with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews and the like. You’ll also get a program guide and the usual social network bells and whistles, so if you’ve been looking to get your Psych or Burn Notice fix on the go, hit the source.
