The iPad will be in even more schools come this fall when classes start up again, as Apple has landed a huge contract with the Los Angeles Unified School District that will see them pay $30 million to Apple for the ability to use iPads in classrooms once the school season starts back up again
There is nothing quite like the smell of a newborn baby, and of course, the promise and joy that a new life is able to bring into one’s life. The thing is, there are instances where new mothers are separated from their newborns right after birth, no thanks to a host of reasons, where among them include complications that arise post birth, a premature birth, or for some, the need for post surgical recovery. Of course, this moment in time would definitely be very hard for the mother, who has for at least 7 months already did her fair bit in making sure that said child would have a relatively safe passage into this world. In order to ease the pain of this separation in a virtual manner, the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles will be relying on the wonders of an iPad in their neonatal intensive care unit for video teleconferencing purposes between mothers and children.
The new program will be known as BabyTime, where it also offers a new mother the ability to speak with the clinicians who happen to take care of her baby. This is more than a welcome feature, especially when things do seem to go downhill at the moment, as this particular connection between mother and child is one that remains all life long, even right from the very beginning. The iPad will be set up right beside the infant’s incubator the moment said infant enters the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, while the new mother would be on the receiving end of an iPad herself, as she can log onto BabyTime twice a day.
Selma Braziel, nurse manager for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, said, “The BabyTime program will reduce fear and stress in the new moms as they are able to see their babies and also communicate with the doctors and nurses.” I can totally identify with what she said, and it makes a potentially traumatic experience more manageable, which is always a good thing.

The cellphone may have turned 40 years old today — just in time for its mid-life crisis, but another product is having a birthday as well, celebrating three years of being on the market. The original Apple iPad was released to the public for the first time exactly three years ago today, on April 3, 2010.
On that day, only the WiFi version was available for purchase, which would set you back $499 for 16GB of storage, 256MB of RAM, and an 1GHz Apple A4 processor. The tablet was officially unveiled to the world on January 27, 2010, but didn’t go on sale for another two months, roughly. The 3G version was released on April 30, with international users being able to buy one on May 28 of that year.
Look ahead to today, and Apple has already flown through four generations of iPads, the newest sporting a Retina display, a 1.4GHz Apple A6X processor, 1GB of RAM, and up to a whopping 128GB of storage. There’s even the iPad mini, which is a smaller 7-inch version of the full-size, 9.7-inch variant.
The iPad has certainly come a long way since it’s release three years ago, and while it has ultimately gotten thinner and faster, the original iPad is still a remarkable piece of machinery. Heck, I still have my 1st-generation iPad going strong to this day, and it’s showing no signs of stopping quite yet. To get a bit of nostalgia flowing through your veins, check out our full review of the device, which also went live three years ago today.

Apple patent application details magnetic iPad stand for extra-secure mounting
Posted in: Today's ChiliA recently published Apple patent reveals the design for a “magnetic tablet configured to rigidly hold a portion of the tablet device in place.” You can bet that “tablet device” is the iPad, and judging from the many photos associated with the patent, the stand is meant to mount the slate more securely than your average dock, not to mention the Smart Cover. One scenario, for instance, shows the iPad secured on top of a treadmill, while another depicts the device hanging from the roof of the car. By far the most intriguing example is two iPads connected to each other magnetically, creating a hinge between the two displays. Click through to the source link for a look at Cupertino’s other envisioned use cases for this super-strength stand — though don’t get your hopes up on seeing this design hit stores any time soon; the original patent was filed in late 2011.

According to Piper Jaffray, an investment research firm, Apple will most likely be hosting an event between March and April. An analyst at the firm, Gene Munster, analyzed the time frame of launch events held by Apple, and he believes that Apple’s full-sized iPad is due for a major redesign. He also believes the iPad Mini may receive an update of its own as well, but considering that it had just launched last October, it would be unlikely.
By analyzing the previous launch events held by Apple, Gene Munster believes that the Apple always holds a launch event in the Spring time. Combing through the 11 major product launch events held by Apple since the launch of the iPhone 3GS, Munster believes that the Spring event always centers around iPad updates, and that with it being the first Apple event of the year, it is going to feature something major. The ‘something major’ is speculated to be a complete redesign of the full-sized iPad that resembles the design of the iPad Mini. He also believes that the next iPad mini could be introduced at the event, and this time it will carry a Retina display.
Munster goes deeper into the details, and found that the average time between Apple’s launch events is 123 days, or about 4 months. He also analyzes that the longest time between events was about 216 days, or 7 months, and that was the gap between the iPad 2 launch in March 2011 and the iPhone 4S launch in October 2011. By taking those times into consideration, and also considering that every other company will be holding major launch events around that time, he believes that the event will be held in between March and April.
Apple TV is also due for an update sometime within the next 6 months, and Munster believes it will be updated to ‘prime the pump for the ultimate television’. Considering that Apple has just launched the iPad Mini and 4th gen iPad in October, there could be a change in the schedules of its launch events. We all remember how upset iPad 3 owners were when the 4th gen iPad was release just 7 months after they bought their devices.

It looks like Apple and Staples has come to an agreement that will allow Staple to sell Apple’s products through its U.S. retail stores. The first confirmation came from Regis Mulot, Senior Vice President of Global Human Resources at Staples, who sent out a tweet saying, “After Canada, #Apple products arecoming to #Staples in US. Great news!”. We assume that Regis Mulot was a little too trigger happy with his tweet because it was deleted soon after. Fortunately for us, many other executives has confirmed the agreement as well.
To Apple, this is probably just another day of meetings and agreements. But to Staples, this is a huge win, and it’s apparent due to the excitement from its executives. Erin LaFlamme, Strategic Accounts Coordinator for Staples, tweeted, “Thanks #Apple for letting #Staples sell you…oh, and for the delicious apple products to celebrate at… ”. Mike Goggin, Field Services Manager for Staples, tweeted, “Staples just finalized a deal to begin selling Apple products #finally”.
This agreement has been long overdue in the U.S., especially considering that Canada’s Staples stores have been carrying Apple products for quite a while now. The availability of Apple products in Staples’s U.S. retail stores should increase the convenience of purchasing an Apple device for many consumers. Not everyone has an Apple store nearby, so Apple enters into agreements with retailers to get their products into the hands of as many consumers as possible.
None of the tweets about the Apple/Staples agreement said anything about when Apple’s products will be available at Staples, but it shouldn’t be too long from now. There also wasn’t any confirmation on what Apple products would be for sale at Staples, but if it’s anything like the Staples in Canada, you should expect to see Apple’s whole selection of products, including iPods, iPads, Macbooks, and Apple TVs.

Regardless of whether you love or hate the iPad, I am quite sure that you have crossed paths with it at least once in your lifetime. For those who fall under the latter category of feelings, well, perhaps this bit of news might irk you more, but for Apple fans, this is definitely pleasant news that will send you scurrying back to your piggy bank, wondering whether there is enough inside to help you make the jump to an upgrade. I am referring to the fourth generation iPad with Retina display which has just been announced to receive a bump to the total amount of storage space – it has basically doubled from 64GB to hit the 128GB mark, making it an Ultrabook alternative when you think about it. All you need now is a wireless keyboard accessory to hook up to the 128GB iPad and you’re good to go.
The 128GB version of the fourth generation iPad with Retina display will be made available for the iPad with Wi-Fi and iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular models, and with double the storage capacity of its predecessor, this would mean you are able to stash away even more valuable content ranging from photos to documents, projects, presentations, books, movies, TV shows, music and apps among others.
Sure, this is not exactly a quantum leap when it comes to hardware, but still, 128GB of storage space would make the iPad all the more desirable if you have yet to pick one up from Apple.
Just to recap, the fourth generation iPad will come with a 9.7-inch Retina display, where it runs on the Apple-designed A6X processor, accompanied by a FaceTime HD camera with iOS 6.1 as the operating system of choice. Expect the new 128GB models of the fourth generation iPad to be made available before Valentine’s Day, starting on February 5, where it will come in black or white colors. The asking price? $799 and $929 respectively, for the iPad with Wi-Fi model and the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model.
