Playboy Coming to iPad, But Not Via App

hug_hefner.jpg

Hugh Hefner wasn’t lying to his loyal Twitter followers earlier today when he stated, “Big news! Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March.” But the facts aren’t quite what many had suspected (or, perhaps, hoped).

Apple hasn’t dropped its staunch anti-adult content policy in the wake of Steve Jobs’s absence. Nope, Hefner and co. will be circumventing the company’s strict App Store policing the way so many adult content providers have before–via the Internet.

Playboy is teaming up with Web designer Bondi to create an iPad-friendly content site. As a Playboy rep said in an interview, “We are releasing a web-based subscription service with Bondi Digital Publishing that will give users access to every issue of Playboy both past and present. The service will be iPad-compatible and will utilize iPad functions.”

The publisher will also be offering an iPad app in the coming months, but this one will feature a lot less nakedness, for those who are actually, you know, in it for the articles.

This Tank is Controlled by iPhone

TankBot

If you have some spare cash in your pocket, an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, and an affinity for tanks and/or robots, TankBot is a robotic toy that can sit on your desk when not in use, but can storm the front between HR and Sales when you need to reclaim some territory.
TankBot is controlled through an iOS app, much like the Parrot AR Drone, and uses your iOS device’s accelerometer to roll forward, backwards, or make turns.
Simply tilt your iPhone forward and TankBot starts moving ahead. Tilt your phone to the left, and TankBot makes a left turn. If you’d rather let TankBot do its own recon, you can set it to autonomous mode and let it go exploring. It’ll avoid obstacles and interact with the people it encounters all by itself. TankBot will be available in June and retail for just under $20.

The Kensington PowerLift Props and Charges Up Your iPhone

Kensington Powerlift

iPhone and iPod docks are a dime a dozen, but the new Kensington PowerLift is a dock that’s designed to fit you just right. The dock is a compact package with a 30-pin dock connector on one side, a kick-stand for your iPhone on another side, a battery under the hood, and a USB cable tucked into the top.
The dock connector folds out to the angle you want to keep your iPhone propped up to, and the kick-stand folds up to keep your iPhone in place and propped up.
The USB cable folds out from the base of the dock and connects to either your power brick or your computer for charging and syncing, but you may not need it thanks to the PowerLift’s built-in 1200 mAh battery, which can give your iPhone a boost when it’s running low. When not in use, the PowerLift folds up into a small square brick and packs away nicely. It’s available for pre-order from Kensington for $49.99 list price.

Playboy Hits the iPad–Is Apple Softening Stance on Adult Content?

hug_hefner.jpg

Is Apple loosening its strong anti-adult content stance? Playboy founder Hugh Hefner announced via Twitter today that his magazine’s content–all of it–will be hitting Apple’s popular tablet.

“Big news!” the robe-clad magazine magnate tweeted. “Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March.” The content, Hefner confirmed in a follow up response, will be “uncensored,” including the “whole magazine from the first issue to the latest.”

Apple–particularly CEO Steve Jobs–has barred all adult content from its App Store. Last April, Jobs famously told the press, “You know, there’s a porn store for Android. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That’s a place we don’t want to go–so we’re not going to go there.”

No word on Apple’s end whether the company will be “going there” with Playboy.

Woz “Frightened” By Jobs Leave

steve-jobs-Steve-wozniak.jpg

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak responded to Steve Jobs’s sudden leave from Apple this week in an e-mail, stating, “The news actually frightened me because I did not expect it.”

Jobs over the long weekend issued a release stating that he would be going on leave for an unspecified medical reason, fueling speculation in the media that his pancreatic cancer had returned. The day-to-day running of the company has fallen on Apple COO Tim Cook, who has filled in for Jobs during past medical leaves–and is largely expected to become the company’s next CEO.

Woz said that he had yet to actually reach out to his Apple co-founder, but added that he supports Jobs’s decision. “If Steve is tired and wants a bit more normal life,” Woz said, “more power to him.”

Wozniak and Jobs co-founded Apple Computers with Ronald Wayne in 1976. Wozniak exited the company in 1987, but is still an Apple shareholder–and proud user of Apple products.

Starbucks Adds Mobile Payments From iPhones, BlackBerrys

Is there anything more troubling in this modern world than having to use a credit card to pay for overpriced coffee? Thankfully, Starbucks is making life easier for iPhone, iPod touch, and BlackBerry users, releasing an app for those platforms that will let customers pay for their caramel macchiatos with their mobile devices at 6,800 standalone locations and 1,000 Target-based locations.

The Starbucks Card Mobile App is currently available as a free download from the Apple and RIM app stores. Beyond the aforementioned payment functionality, the app also lets users check the balance and add more money to the card (via credit card or Paypal), locate a nearby store, and check up on their Reward status.

Users pay by opening the app and waving the on-screen barcode across the store’s countertop scanner. According to Starbucks, more than one-third of the coffee giant’s customers own a smartphone, a number that, at least anecdotally, seems a bit low.

Apple Reports Record Numbers, Steve Jobs Still Sick

Apple today posted its financial results for the first quarter of 2011, and the company has plenty to celebrate, pulling in $26.74 billion dollars–that’s up from $15.68 billion the same time last year.

Apple moved 7.33 million iPads, 16.24 million iPhones (up 86 percent over last year), and 4.13 million Macs (up 23 percent over last year). iPod sales decreased, meanwhile, with 19.45 million (down seven percent), continuing no doubt to be cannibalized by iPhone sales.

The company’s CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, was, not surprisingly, optimistic about the whole thing,

We couldn’t be happier with the performance of our business, generating $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter. Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $22 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $4.90.

A release issued by the company also contained a quote from CEO Steve Jobs,

We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with record Mac, iPhone and iPad sales. We are firing on all cylinders and we’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can’t wait to get their hands on.

The presence–or rather lack–of Jobs cast a shadow on the positive results. News came out this weekend that the CEO would be taking yet another medical leave of absence from the company, a fact that has fueled speculation that the executive’s cancer may have returned.

iPad 2 Rumor Roundup

Earlier today, we saw what were reportedly leaked images from a Chinese manufacturer of a silicon case for the upcoming iPad. It’s just the latest in a long series of leaked specs, images, and videos, which all point to something we already know–the iPad 2 is coming, and soon.
Apple, after all, transformed the industry with the release of the first iPad, flying in the face of naysayers who didn’t believe the company could buck the trend by releasing a tablet that would be widely adopted by the public–particularly one that was little more than “a big iPhone.” As evidenced by sales figures, stock prices, and the absurd number of tablets that popped up at this year’s CES, however, Steve Jobs and company have certainly had the last laugh.
Like all Apple products, the company is being incredibly tight-lipped about the new iPad ahead of its release. After the jump, check out a list of what we think we know so far.

14-Year-Old Beats Out Angry Birds for Top iPhone Spot

rober-nay.jpg

Admit it, you were getting a bit sick of those little slingshotting fowl. Well, a new champion has arisen, taking the much-coveted top spot on the iTunes free apps list. The game Bubble Ball follows a pretty simple premise–the user place a series of simple machines in strategic spots on the screen, in order to roll a ball to the finish line.

But where many of the titles that have snagged the top spot have been the work of a team of experienced programmers and game designers (like, say, Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds), Bubble Ball is largely the product of a single designer–Robert Nay, a 14-year-old eighth grader from Utah.

Nay did most of the game development using a few tools like Corona DSK, a $349 program that lets the user create a game and publish it to the App Store. Nay also got a little design help from his mom.

The 14-year-old started work on Bubble Ball back in November, launching it on December 29th. Since then, the app has been downloaded 1.5 million times. Over the weekend, it beat out the free version of the incredibly popular Angry Birds.

Steve Jobs on Leave From Apple, Mystery Abounds

steve-jobs_costume.jpg

What could possibly cause a five percent drop in Apple’s share? An absent Steve Jobs, of course. After all, there’s no other executive in tech that so fully personifies the company he runs. When the company dumped Jobs in the mid-80s, after a disagreement with then-CEO John Sculley, the company nearly collapsed.

And then, of course, there’s the fact that Jobs had taken a leave in the past due to cancer–a word that has come up an awful lot in the wake of this weekend’s announcement that he will be taking another temporary creak.

As with last time, COO Tim Cook will be manning the ship. Said Jobs in a statement that went out over the weekend,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011,” Jobs continued. “I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Questions surrounding Jobs’s health–and Cook’s seemingly eventual rise to the company’s top position–surfaced again last week, when the COO appeared on stage with Verizon executives to announce the long awaited appearance of the iPhone on that carrier, a role most assumed would have been filed by Jobs.
