WikiLeaks Pulled From iPhone App Store

wikileaks_iphone_app.jpg

Five days after first appearing in the iTunes App Store, Apple has apparently pulled an unofficial WikiLeaks iPhone/iPad app. The biggest shocker here seems to be the fact that the thing ever actually appeared in the store at all. Apple has sought to avoid controversy (granted not always that successfully) with its fairly nebulous App Store terms of service, and these days things don’t get all that much more controversial than WikiLeaks.

A number of high profile companies have already pulled support for the whistle blowing site in a very high profile way, including Amazon, Bank of America, Mastercard, PayPal, and Visa. A number of governments–the US included–have condemned the actions of WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange.

Apple didn’t give much detail regarding the removal of the app, sending developer Igor Barinov a generic form letter reading, “The status for the following app has changed to Removed From Sale.” The app itself wasn’t sanctioned by WikiLeaks. It is a paid app ($1.99) that offers access to the site’s free content.

At present, a number of WikiLeaks-related apps are still available through the Android Market.

iPhone 4 $147 at Sam’s Club

Where’s the cheapest place to pick up an iPhone 4 these days? For the next week or so, that title belongs to Walmart offshoot Sam’s Club. You can get the latest version of Apple’s handset for $147, according to information obtained by Engadget–that’s a full $2 less than you would pay for the same handset over at Radio Shack.

The deal on the 16GB handset goes until Christmas day. The store is also offering up its predecessor, the iPhone 3Gs for a dirt cheap $47, marking a $42 price drop for both phones.

Best Buy Offering Free MiFi With iPad Purchase

Probably a little late for the Christmas crowd, but 9 to 5 Mac managed to snag an early peak at a new Best Buy ad offering up a free MiFi with the purchase of an iPad. Pretty sweet deal, if you’re in the market for both of those things–you’ll save $130 off of Verizon’s asking price.

Of course, nothing is ever truly free, when it comes to mobile hardware–you’ll have to sign a two-year contract with either AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon. If you’re still down, you’ve got until January 2nd, to take advantage of the deal.

Top Stories of 2010: Part One

Thumbnail image for justinbieberbike.jpg

As 2010 nears its end, it’s time to start getting all nostalgic. There were a lot of ups and downs in the world of tech this year, and as we take a look at some of our top stories for the calendar, it’s impossible not to notice just how diverse the selection is.

We start this first of a two-part retrospective with a surprisingly popular “sex robot” and cap it off with a bit of bad press for Apple in what was largely a pretty decent year for Jobs and co.

[Above, sorry, a little Bieber couldn’t be helped.]

PlayStation App for iPhone, Android Doesn’t Play Games

playsttion_iphone_appn.jpg

I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that there’s a PlayStation app coming soon for the iPhone and Android handsets. The bad news is that it doesn’t actually do what you’re hoping it does–i.e. play games.

The app is more of a supplemental resource for PlayStation owners. You can use it to check things like trophies and friends’ statuses, discover information about new games, read the PlayStation Blog, and share info via Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail. PlayStation phone it’s not.

The app is coming “very soon” to European markets like the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. More markets will follow later.

EA is having a downright massive sale on iPhone apps this week, in celebration of the coming holiday. The gaming giant has discounted more than 70 iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps to $0.99 down from prices ranging between $1.99 and $7.99.

There are a of familiar titles on this. Here are a few choice picks:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
NBA Elite 11
Fifa 11
Madden NFL 11
Tiger Woods PGA Tour
The Sims 3
Spore Creatures
Monopoly
Risk: The Official Game
Clue
Scrabble
The Simpsons Arcade
Wolfenstein RPG
Tetris
American Idol: The Game
Littlest Pet Shop

You can find a more complete list of the games over at Touch Arcade. Looks like the holiday push is paying off for EA. The company is currently dominating the iTunes app sales list between its discounts and those perennial favorite Angry Birds.

Word Lens: iPhone App of the Year?

Here’s a belated entry for those of you who are compiling year-end best of mobile app lists. People are tossing around words like “magic” and “future” upon giving Visual Quest’s new app a spin, and we’ve got to say, from demos we’ve seen, we’re pretty impressed.

Word Lens is an augmented reality language translator–hold it up in front of a sign in a different language, and the thing will translate it in real time. All in all, it’s pretty fantastic, and a lot more useful than most of the games and other apps that tend to dominate the iTunes sales lists.

The app itself is free, but there’s $4.99 fee for Word Lens’ various language packs. At present, the app only does Spanish to English and English to Spanish. More languages will be coming soon.

Octavio Good, a developer behind the app explained its process thusly, “It tries to find out what the letters are and then looks in the dictionary. Then it draws the words back on the screen in translation.” Neat.

Video of the app in action after the jump.

The iKit Chrome Flip iPhone 4 Case Has a Shiny Kickstand

iKit Chrome Flip Stand

There are enough cases out there with kickstands now that if you plan to do any traveling with your phone or like to watch video on it, there’s no reason to buy a case that doesn’t have one on the back. The new iKit Chrome Flip case for the iPhone 4 adds a little style and color to your iPhone, leaves the ports and buttons open for use, and has a kickstand on the back so you can prop your device up when you’re ready to watch video or do a FaceTime video call.
The Chrome Flip is available in blue, silver, and pink metallic shades, and is made of polycarbonate to protect your phone from drops and falls. If you’re looking for a stocking stuffer for that iPhone owner who just won’t get a case, this one will set you back $34.95 list.

The TimeCommand iPhone Dock Controls Other Gadgets Too

TimeCommand Dock

Some of us have a ton of electronic devices on our nightstand: phones in chargers, alarm clocks, media players, radios, lamps, and more. Imagine what life would be like if one gadget would charge your phone, wake you up in the morning, play music and even turn your light on or off based on a time you specify. That’s what you get with the TimeCommand docking station
Simply dock your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad on the top and use the mobile app to program the alarm, radio stations or playlists you want to wake up to, and if you have a lamp with an incandescent bulb, you can plug the lamp into the plug on the dock to have the TimeCommand turn the lamp on or off when you specify.
You can even tell the dock to slowly raise or lower the brightness for easier waking or sleeping, and it has battery backups so you’ll never miss an alarm. The TimeCommand will set you back $99.95 and is available in Apple retail stores now.

Verizon iPhone Would Sell 9 Mil Units in 2011 – Analyst

iphone 4 flat.jpg

The Verizon iPhone isn’t any more real right now than it was a few years ago, but that’s not going to stop analysts from making bold predictions about the phone. The handset, which is currently rumored to be hitting the market at the beginning of next year, will sell nine million units in 2011, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

That number is 36 percent of the total number of phones he expects Verizon to sell next year. It’s also two million less than the 11 million iPhones he expects AT&T to sell next year. Munster expects most of the new Verizon iPhone buyers to come over from AT&T.

The two carriers will sell a combined 20 million iPhones next year, according to his numbers–more than the 17.5 million he expects AT&T to sell, should the Verizon deal never come to fruition. The analyst told Apple Insider that these numbers “may be conservative.”

According to the report, AT&T will sell a total of 63 million iPhones globally next year–that number is up from 46.3 million in 2010. The number will jump to 78.3 million globally in 2012. Apple and Verizon are both expected to nab 14 million each.
