WikiLeaks Pulled From iPhone App Store

wikileaks_iphone_app.jpg

Five days after first appearing in the iTunes App Store, Apple has apparently pulled an unofficial WikiLeaks iPhone/iPad app. The biggest shocker here seems to be the fact that the thing ever actually appeared in the store at all. Apple has sought to avoid controversy (granted not always that successfully) with its fairly nebulous App Store terms of service, and these days things don’t get all that much more controversial than WikiLeaks.

A number of high profile companies have already pulled support for the whistle blowing site in a very high profile way, including Amazon, Bank of America, Mastercard, PayPal, and Visa. A number of governments–the US included–have condemned the actions of WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange.

Apple didn’t give much detail regarding the removal of the app, sending developer Igor Barinov a generic form letter reading, “The status for the following app has changed to Removed From Sale.” The app itself wasn’t sanctioned by WikiLeaks. It is a paid app ($1.99) that offers access to the site’s free content.

At present, a number of WikiLeaks-related apps are still available through the Android Market.

Where’s the cheapest place to pick up an iPhone 4 these days? For the next week or so, that title belongs to Walmart offshoot Sam’s Club. You can get the latest version of Apple’s handset for $147, according to information obtained by Engadget–that’s a full $2 less than you would pay for the same handset over at Radio Shack.

The deal on the 16GB handset goes until Christmas day. The store is also offering up its predecessor, the iPhone 3Gs for a dirt cheap $47, marking a $42 price drop for both phones.

Best Buy Offering Free MiFi With iPad Purchase

Probably a little late for the Christmas crowd, but 9 to 5 Mac managed to snag an early peak at a new Best Buy ad offering up a free MiFi with the purchase of an iPad. Pretty sweet deal, if you’re in the market for both of those things–you’ll save $130 off of Verizon’s asking price.

Of course, nothing is ever truly free, when it comes to mobile hardware–you’ll have to sign a two-year contract with either AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon. If you’re still down, you’ve got until January 2nd, to take advantage of the deal.

Top Stories of 2010: Part One

Thumbnail image for justinbieberbike.jpg

As 2010 nears its end, it’s time to start getting all nostalgic. There were a lot of ups and downs in the world of tech this year, and as we take a look at some of our top stories for the calendar, it’s impossible not to notice just how diverse the selection is.

We start this first of a two-part retrospective with a surprisingly popular “sex robot” and cap it off with a bit of bad press for Apple in what was largely a pretty decent year for Jobs and co.

[Above, sorry, a little Bieber couldn’t be helped.]

iTunes Still Dominating Music Market

Apple still controls 66.3 of the online music market, according to new numbers from analyst firm NPD. Amazon is in second place–a distant second at 13.3 percent of the market, all of this despite an aggressive push from sites like Amazon and Walmart.com to topple iTunes’ strangle hold on the industry.

Among Amazon’s approaches are deep discounts on records, like the new album from Kayne West, which sold for $4.99 its first week–less than half of Apple’s asking price. Great for consumers, but artists seem less than enthused. The Wall Street Journal quotes the Fleet Foxes’ Twitter feed, “Been working for nine months on something that will sell for 3.99 on Amazon MP3. That’s about the price of a whoopie cushion.”

Yowtch.

Apple actually managed to increase its market share in 2010, moving up from 63.2 percent. Amazon increased as well, moving up from 11 percent.

Scosche Kickback P1

If you’re on a long plane trip or just prefer to use your iPad as an entertainment device, it helps to have a decent stand you can use to keep it propped up while you watch a movie or play games. Some cases and stands are made for work and others for play, but the Scosche Kickback P1 is designed for both. The case is rugged polycarbonate with a kickstand that can prop your iPad up near-90 degrees so you don’t hurt your neck watching a movie.
The sides of the case allow access to the iPad’s ports and controls, and the back has rubber bumpers on it so it rests comfortably when laid flat. The Kickback P1 is available now, and will cost you $59.99 retail price.

Word Lens: iPhone App of the Year?

word lens.jpg

Here’s a belated entry for those of you who are compiling year-end best of mobile app lists. People are tossing around words like “magic” and “future” upon giving Visual Quest’s new app a spin, and we’ve got to say, from demos we’ve seen, we’re pretty impressed.

Word Lens is an augmented reality language translator–hold it up in front of a sign in a different language, and the thing will translate it in real time. All in all, it’s pretty fantastic, and a lot more useful than most of the games and other apps that tend to dominate the iTunes sales lists.

The app itself is free, but there’s $4.99 fee for Word Lens’ various language packs. At present, the app only does Spanish to English and English to Spanish. More languages will be coming soon.

Octavio Good, a developer behind the app explained its process thusly, “It tries to find out what the letters are and then looks in the dictionary. Then it draws the words back on the screen in translation.” Neat.

Video of the app in action after the jump.

Apple Opening Mac App Store January 6th

Apple will be kicking off the new year in style, with the launch of its much anticipated Mac App Store, a desktop-based counterpart to its ultra-successful iPhone and iPad stores. The new storefront will be available in 90 countries and will feature applications from a wide variety of categories, including Games, Productivity, Utilities, Education, Design, and Lifestyle.

Said CEO Steve Jobs in an announcement that went out this morning, “The App Store revolutionized mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.”

Note the use of the word “PC.” Aw, how the times have changed.

The Mac store will offer most of the familiar features, including download charts, ratings and reviews, and one-click purchasing. Once downloaded, apps can be run on multiple Macs when signed into your account. The store is available as a free update to Mac owners with Snow Leopard installed.

Apple is offering up 70 percent of download revenue to developers.
