Angry Birds, Facebook Top 2010 iPhone Apps

Angry Birds Peace Treaty

Apple today released its list of the most popular apps for the iPhone and iPad. Not surprisingly, Angry Birds and Facebook made it out on top this year. Facebook topped the list of free iPhone apps, followed by Angry Birds Lite (the demo version of the popular game), Words With Friends, Skype, and Tap Tap Revenge. The Weather Channel, Rock Band, and Microsoft’s Bing all made the top ten, as well.

Rovio’s popular bird slingshotting title topped the games-heavy paid iPhone app list, followed by Doodle Jump Skee-Ball, Bejeweled 2, and Fruit Ninja. Major League Baseball’s At Bat app was actually the highest grossing iPhone app of the year, followed by Angry Birds at number two.

Over on the iPad side, Apple’s Pages and iBooks topped the paid and free app lists, respectively. Angry Birds HD, Netflix, Pandora, Google, Kindle, and Wolfram Alpha all made the list, as well.

iPhone 4 Made from Dinosaur Tooth Now Available

dinosaur_tooth_iphone.jpg

I never really understood the appeal of those ultra-expensive diamond-covered iPhones. This, on the other hand, is something I can really get behind. Stuart Hughes, the man behind an $8 million blinged out iPhone, has introduced the iPhone History Edition. It’s an iPhone 4 with the customary glass back swapped out for a flattened tyrannosaurus rex tooth and meteoric stone.

The phone also features 8.5 diamonds in the bezel and an Apple logo made from diamond and platinum–because if you’re going to go all out, why not really go crazy? Hughes said of the phone, “I have worked with dinosaur in the past but I wanted to go fierce on this one. Hence we [included] a tooth. It doesn’t come more fierce than that.”

You can pick up this understated handset for the low price of $63,000–a virtual steal compared to that $8 million thing. No world on how dinosaur bone affects reception–extinction, after all, could be the ultimate death grip.

The iPad Lock Keeps Your iPad Cabled to Your Desk

iPadLock

You know those wire cables that businesses use to secure laptops and desktops to desks, walls, and floors in order to prevent theft? Now you can have one for your iPad in the form of the iPadLock, in case you’re worried about someone swiping your iPad from your desk at the office when you go to a meeting, or want to be able to leave it on a desk in the library while you go to the bathroom.
The iPad Lock is a clear plastic full-body case and kick-stand for the iPad with a port on the side that fits the included cable lock.
The iPad doesn’t have its own security slot, so the folks behind the iPadLock built a case that has one in it, and included the steel cable that secures into the case on one side and loops around a fixture or desk on the other. They also claim that once the case and the cable are locked together, the case can’t be removed without damaging the iPad inside.
You can buy the case and the lock together for $79.95 list price, or just the case for $39.95 list.

The iProp gives Your iPad a Flexible Stand

iProp

If you’ve ever wanted to turn your iPad into an alarm clock that stands next to your bed, or position it next to your workspace where you can use it without having to get a stand or clear off a place on your desk for it, the iProp is perfect for you. The iProp is a completely flexible, 36-inch stand with a weighted base that will let you swing your iPad over you if you’re sitting on the couch or lying in bed. The base weighs 6 pounds and can support your iPad anywhere you place it.
Granted, the iProp is built to be the perfect lazy way to hold up your iPad and use it without you having to support it with your hands, but it works just as well as an accessory that keeps your iPad close at hand if you’re sitting and working at your desk. Remember that when you drop the $79.95 list price to buy one, and try to remember to use it in other places than your bed.

iPad 2 Shipping By February 2011 (Rumor)

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for ipadnytimes.jpg

Don’t put too much stock in this rumor–the news that comes from these third-party parts manufacturers is spotty at best. That said, we have seen some of these come to fruition in the past, and let’s face it, if there’s one thing we do seemingly no for sure, it’s that Steve Jobs is going to show off a new iPad next year.

And if Apple goes according to its prior scheduling for the device (the company is often a creature of habit when it comes to updating products), we’re going to see that iPad 2 early next year, seeing as how the first model was unveiled in January of this year.

Apple supplier Foxconn Electronics has reportedly been told to ship 400,000-600,000 iPad 2 units in the next 100 days, according to Digitimes‘ “sources from Taiwan-based component makers.”

Here’s what those sources had to say,

[T]he iPad 2 will ship as soon as the end of February in 2011. Apple originally planned to start mass production in January, but because the device’s firmware is currently still in testing, Apple has been postponing the schedule. Since Foxconn’s new plants in Chengdu are still in pilot production, iPad 2 will be mainly supplied by its Shenzhen plants, while the company’s upstream component partners have all been notified of the shipments schedule.

Foxconn naturally declined DigiTimes’ request for comment. My guess is that the site didn’t even attempt to contact Apple…

Verizon iPhone Would Drop Fewer Calls (Report)

iphone 4 flat.jpg

According to a new report–and a little common sense–the consensus seems to be that a Verizon iPhone would drop fewer phone calls than its AT&T counterpart. Nothing too shocking there, right? I mean, that’s sort of the whole reason so many customers are eagerly awaiting Apple’s rumored January announcement of a Verizon handset.

A Verizon iPhone would actually be bolstered by its own limitations–the fact that the CDMA carrier can’t surf the Web while taking phone calls (unlike AT&T’s GSM technology) means that phone calls are less likely to be dropped due to data clogging the bandwidth.

“One of the things about CDMA is that most CDMA operators are set up to be voice first, data second,” a spokesman for the CDMA Development Group told MSNBC. “If you are browsing a Web page and you get a call coming in, the data will stop and the call will go through.”

Think of it this way: Verizon’s 3G data protocol is called EVDO–that acronym initially stood for Evolution-Data Only, meaning that the service just does data, not calls. There is a separate channel for calls. AT&T’s 3G network, meanwhile, does both.

In the next year, CDMA will be offering “simultaneous voice and data optimization,” according to the CDMA development group. While the chipset will allow users to surf the Web while making calls, data and voice will remain on separate channels, meaning that, at least theoretically, one won’t interfere with the other.

Looking for a low priced gift for the tech enthusiast in your life who has everything? Well, if said person owns an iPhone or iPad, consider one of these ultra cheap accessories. Steve Jobs would likely consider the Pogo Stylus Sketch a crime against nature. For those who use their devices to create art and handwritten notes, it may just be a godsend.

This $15 accessory features a soft tip that gives the user the writing freedom of a stylus (you remember those, right?). The Pogo Stylus is also a terrific option in these winter months, when gloves make it impossible to use the device’s touchscreen.

The Pogo also works with the Zune HD, Android handsets, and most other touchscreen devices. You can pick one up at the Ten One Design page.

The Pebble Smartskin for iPad Boosts Your iPad Battery

Pebble SmartSkin

There are plenty of cases that protect your iPad when you travel, but not all of them keep the battery charged at the same time. The Pebble Smartskin for iPad from Veho, however, gives you a screen protector, a soft rubberized case, and a 6000mAh battery pack all in one package that attaches to your iPad when you need a little extra juice but you don’t want to risk scratching or damaging it.
The Pebble Smartskin’s rubber backing slides on the top and the bottom and leaves all of the ports on the iPad free to use except for the Dock Connector, where the battery pack plugs in. The screen protector rests on the screen while you slide the two sides of the case onto the top and bottom, and the Smartskin even comes with a neoprene pouch to carry it all in when you have the case on. The whole package will cost you $89.95 retail price, and is available now at select retailers.

Apple Mac App Store Launching December 13 (Rumor)

mac_app_store.png

Steve Jobs wants to launch that Mac App Store soon. Really, really soon. How soon? Like yesterday soon. Apparently Apple’s head honcho had hoped to have the new store launched by now, having told developers to have their app ready by now.

“That obviously didn’t happen, ” writes Apple Tell, “but Apple appears to be way ahead of schedule on the Mac App Store nonetheless, and looks to take advantage of the Christmas rush.”

An “inside source” told the site that the company is now looking to launch the service a week from today, hitting that ever-precious holiday buying rush, making the purchase of a shiny new Mac all the sweeter. Jobs first announced the new store back in October, giving the company 90 days to launch the service, making the deadline late January.

Apple is also said to be holding a press conference in the coming weeks to discuss publication distribution for the iPad (including a rumored appearance by Rupert Murdoch). Perhaps the company is looking to combine both announcements into a single event.

iPhone 4 “as Low as $24” at Radioshack

iphone 4 flat.jpg

A $24 iPhone 4 at Radioshack? Too good to be true? Sort of. It can happen, but it takes a tricky bit of legwork. Let’s start with the one week sale the electronics retailer is holding, which discounts all iPhone models by $50. New customers and those eligible for upgrades can nab a 16GB iPhone 4 for $150 and a 32GB model for $250. You with me so far? Good.

Okay, next there’s the Trade & Save program–bring in a working iPhone 3G, and you’ll get a $75 credit for a new phone. Bring in an iPhone 3GS, and you’ll get a $125 credit. The $125 credit and the $50 discount bring the price of the 16GB iPhone 4 down to $24.99 (with the requisite contract, naturally).

A tricky bit of legwork, sure, and the stars really have to align to take advantage of the deal, but still, a nice discount if you can get it. Radio Shack is also providing an Eligibility Checker, to see if you qualify for the updgrade pricing. Good Luck.
