White iPhone Knockoffs Could Land Teen in Hot Water

white-iphone-4.jpg

A New York-based teenager may have incurred the wrath of Apple’s lawyers after he took white iPhone delays into his own hands. Seventeen-year-old Fei “Phil” Lam has been selling eager customers converter kits to turn black iPhones into white iPhones.

The kits, which he’s selling for around $279 a piece contain parts supplied by Foxcon–the China-based company that manufactures parts for Apple. Lam speaks fluent Chinese and got in touch with FoxCon through an acquaintance. He sells the kits through his site whiteiphonefournow.com.

Lam claims to have made around $130,000 selling them to antsy Apple fans who apparently can’t sit through anymore delays (the white iPhone, now scheduled to arrive in March, was originally slotted to appear at the same time as the black iPhone 4).

Lam plans to use that money to help pay for school. “I’m very thankful, ’cause for months I was struggling for an idea that would bootstrap my first startup and help pay for college,” he told The New York Observer.

Unfortunately, all of that money may end up going to Lam’s legal expenses. The Queens-based teenage entrepreneur claims to have been contacted by a private investigator attempting to put the kibosh on his burgeoning company. Lam believes that the P.I. may have been hired by Apple.

“There are a couple of other sellers online and somehow I’m the ‘focus’ of it all,” Lam said. “I think this guy is just trying to scare me into stop selling on behalf of Apple.”

The video showcases the seven inch business-minded tablet’s browser speed, its ability to run Flash, and its handling of the HTML5 standard.

This Apple-1 Can Be Yours for $240,000

Apple-1This Apple-1 and a signed note from Steve Jobs included with the package can be yours for the low, low price of $161,000 to over $240,000 if you have the money and the stomach to bid on it. The Apple-1 is up for auction at Christie’s in London, and was originally one of the first 200 Apple-1 computers to be sold by then partners and now Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who parted with the hardware for a very evil and now infamous $666.66.

Similar Apple-1 models have sold at auction for as much as $50,000, but the addition of the signed note and the near pristine condition this Apple-1 is in may have led to the bump in starting bid. This Apple-1 comes with the original packaging, operating and instruction manuals, and sales invoice that lists the address of the garage where Apple started as the company address.

Bidding is open now if you want this piece of computing history in your personal collection, but it’s more likely that the buyer will either be a wealthy private collector or a museum or foundation looking for a unique piece to put on display.

Apple/Twitter Strike Ping Deal

ping-itunes.jpg

This may be just the kick in the pants that Ping
needs. Thus far the iTunes-integrated social network has proven something of a
rare misfire in its short existence, a fact that no doubt owes a little to
Apple’s much publicized inability to strike a partnership deal with Facebook.

Apple has, however, found seemingly the next best thing, in
terms of social netowork partnerships: Twitter. A new deal struck between the
two high profile tech companies makes it possible for Ping
users to share song samples on Twitter. The deal also makes it possible to find
friends on Pin by searching through Twitter follower lists.

Explains Twitter,

Once you’ve linked the accounts, whenever you Post, Like,
Review, or tell your friends why you purchased a song or album on Ping,
this activity will also be tweeted to your Twitter followers – complete with
playable song previews and links to purchase and download music from iTunes.

The aforementioned samples will be available in all 23
countries that iTunes serves. Ping was announced back in September, with the introduction of iTunes 10.

Blue Upgrades the Mikey

Mikey_iPod-Touch.jpgBlue Microphones announced the second generation Mikey iPod/iPod Touch/iPhone microphone back in June, but it seems to have been delayed several months. We’ll it’s here now–just about. On Monday the 15th, you’ll be able to get Mikey 2G at Amazon or Apple.com for $79.99. The original earned a lot of fans as a plug-and-play mic for Apple devices that was able to record CD-quality sound. Now the second generation upgrades the first with improved circuitry for better recording at higher volumes. It also now features a 3.5mm line-input for direct recording from sources like a guitar or mixer.

The Mikey 2G offers a 230-degree range of adjustability with seven positions. That means you can position it perfectly for whatever you’re recording: a lecture, voice notes, live music, interviews, or anything else. It also now comes with a carrying case. Like the original, it offers stereo condenser capsules and three selectable gain settings. Note that it doesn’t work with the iPad or iPhone 4, which use different input technology. Blue says an updated version is coming. But when?

Wi-Gear CEO Refutes Apple Purchase Claims

imuffs-ad.jpgIt was only Tuesday that the rumor mill was buzzing over the potential that future iPods may come with wireless headphones, and that Apple had purchased wireless headphone maker Wi-Gear to start work on wireless listening devices for the iPod and possibly the iPhone. While Apple may very well be interested in wireless headphones, according to Wi-Gear CEO Mark Pundsack they didn’t purchase his company. According to comments he made to Barrons:

“The rumor is false,” Wi-Gear CEO Mark Pundsack said via e-mail in response to an inquiry from Tech Trader Daily. “Wi-Gear and its IP are still available for sale.”

He went on to note that the company is currently out of business, but I have to applaud him for making sure to note that the company is indeed up for sale, so Apple, you might want to get on that.

Apple iAd Team Reportedly Getting NYC Office

madmen_cigarette.jpeg

Apple is reportedly in the process of building a new office space next to Manhattan’s Union Square. According to the old anonymous sources, the company is looking to house the iAd mobile advertising team in the new space.

The team is said to currently be holed up in the former Quattro Wireless space, which SF Gate says possesses a ” very start-up feel.” The space is very small, however, and not intended to hold more than 30 employees. The company has an even smaller space above its 14th st. store, west of where the new office is set to open.

The new space is apparently an attempt to win over the Madison Avenue suits.

Apple Reportedly Working on Wireless Headphones

imuffs-ad.jpg

Apple does a lot of things well, but making headphones isn’t among them. Those cheap little white plastic earbuds have long been a dim spot in company’s otherwise aesthetically perfect mobile devices.

They’re cheap and uncomfortable, and surely nearly everyone who has picked up an iPod or iPhone has almost immediately upgraded to a third-party pair of headphones. Word is, however, that those little white ear canal stretchers are going to be replaced by Apple. The company is reportedly working on its own stereo Bluetooth headphones.

The headphones are said to be the fruit of the company’s reported acquisition of Wi-Gear, the company behind the iMuffs wireless headphones. As Ars Technica notes, neither company has actually confirmed the acquisition, though Wi-Gear’s site notes that the company has “ceased operations,” and its lead engineer Michael Kim is now on Apple’s payroll.
