Apple tablet rumors strike back: 9.6-inch with HSDPA and P.A. Semi processor coming February 2010?

Now that all that iPod mess is over and done with, looks like it’s as good of time as any to return to the world of Apple tablet rumors. A report from Taiwan Economic News starts us off right, with “industry sources” telling the outlet it’ll have a 9.6-inch multitouch screen, built-in HSDPA (so much for Verizon), a P. A. Semi processor, a “long lasting battery pack,” and a $799 to $999 price tag. Most to all of that sounds fairly familiar, but coming along with it is a new timeline: shipments will reportedly be delivered to Apple this December in preparation for a launch in February 2010. As for component providers, Taiwanese company DynaPack will reportedly be the exclusive supplier of battery packs, as much as 300,000 per month, while iPhone screen-maker Wintek will be doing the display duties here, too. The author in question here does appear to have some manufacturing sources — it looks like he was right about the Acer Timeline — but at this point, we’re not ready to believe anything without some photographic evidence of Steve Jobs personally adding the magical unicorn tears.

Sweet Confession: I Ate a Chocolate Apple Tablet

With Taste Test in full swing, I couldn’t resist taking a dream concept and challenging a chocolatier. The end result, my friends, is the best tasting Apple product ever. (Trust me on that claim, I ate the whole thing.)

Many, many thanks to Michelle Palisi of Chocolates by Michelle in Port Richey, Florida for making this project possible and for being my personal Willy Wonka.

In the Beginning, There Was Jesus

There’s no hiding the fact that our own Jesus Diaz is a bit of a daydreamer. A little while ago he went as far as to share one of his favorite dreams with us in all its high-definition glory: The Apple Tablet (also known as the iTablet), shown here meticulously rendered next to Jesus’ iMac and iPhone.

I’ll be honest: I drooled when I saw the concept. Not because I’m an Apple fangirl (the only Apple products I own are iPhones and iPods), not because I spotted a Dorothy Parker book in the background, but because I had chocolate on my mind. To me, the iTablet looked like it was one great big chocolate bar straight out of a wacky Willy Wonka fantasy.

And despite all the perks of working for Gizmodo (such as [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]), I didn’t have a Golden Ticket that would let me find out if good ol’ Willy really did make something like this iTablet. But I had something better.

Then There Was Michelle

I had Michelle Palisi, chocolatier extraordinaire, the bane of my waistline, and the person who turned my daydream into reality.

Michelle didn’t even bat an eyelash when I came to her with my request. Instead she looked at the pictures I gave her, studied my iPhone, and handed me a brownie pan. Not one of those odd all-edges brownie pans, but just a simple, basic, plain ol’ brownie pan. For a moment I thought that she had been inhaling too many sprinkles, but then she explained that making a precise mold would cut it too close time-wise, so she would improvise a bit.

Touchscreen? How About Lickscreen?

In my mind, the biggest challenge with the chocolate Apple Tablet was the screen. I’ve seen some cool things done with fondant and frosting, but the screen I wanted had far too much detail for that.

Michelle on the other hand, already had a solution in mind before I even mentioned my concerns: The screen would be printed (with edible ink) on edible paper.

Is This Really Going to Work?

Through some crazy combination of improvised brownie pans, my iPhone and Jesus’ concept as models, edible paper, piping gel, edible paint, frosting and who knows what else—is that a melon baller Michelle is holding?—the dream chocolate iTablet looked like it was moving closer to reality.

Time to Wake Up

When Michelle called me to come see the final products, I was on edge. What if my dream melted into a nightmare? Would the silver bezel drip right off? Would there be dead pixels on the screen?

My fears were for naught. Michelle, who had never even heard of the rumored iTablet before I approached her, did a rather good job creating a chocolate model. The bezel did turn out to be the main issue as the paint smeared with even the lightest touch, leaving my hands looking as if I’d been groping the Silver Surfer.

Lickable But Not Clickable

For a moment I’d let myself imagine that maybe I would be able to switch that damned song with a flick of my finger, but sadly my chocolate gadget is stuck on an infinite replay.

Mmmm….Yes, It’s Definitely Edible

So, how edible is this tablet? The entire thing can be eaten. From the painted bezel to the screen. (Though I must admit that while it melted in my mouth, I wasn’t a fan of the screen taste.)

And Yes, I Ate the Whole Thing

Yummy screen or not, for the sake of proper taste testing I gradually nibbled my way through the entire tablet. Yes, that’s a lot of chocolate and thank goodness that rumor about an XL version didn’t come out yet, because I don’t think I would’ve made it through a tablet that size.

Verdict? Choco-Tablet Beats iPhone Across the Board in Taste Test

It would be a travesty to not truly live up to our theme and conduct a proper comparison test. So I made sure to try out the edibility of another Apple product, my iPhone. Let’s just assume that it doesn’t taste all that great because I gave up on taking a bite after nearly chipping a tooth.

The Morning After

Messy hands, slight tummy ache and a broken chocolate addiction later, I’m satisfied with how this journey from dream to chocolate reality ended. But I definitely hope that the next dream concept isn’t a 30 incher. There is such a thing as too much chocolate.

Rumor: Apple May Be Working on XL Tablets Running Full Mac OS X

This one caught us by surprise, but it comes from a source that has always been 100% reliable: Not only Apple may be working on a 10-inch tablet, but also in 13″ and 15″ models, one running Mac OS X.

This source claims that the two touchscreen prototypes—made of aluminum, but on the shape of big iPhones—were in a factory in Shenzuen, China. One of them “was running Mac OS X 10.5.” When I asked, the source didn’t know if these were built for demonstration purposes, or if they were preproduction units. The company has a tight relation with Apple but “it’s not FoxConn.”

As I said before, with everyone focused on the 10-inch tablet with iPhone OS, this sighting is quite surprising. It is possible that Apple may be just exploring other form factors, and these two models may or may not end being future products.

According to rumors, Apple is in the final stages of developing the Apple wet dream, a 10-inch tablet allegedly running the iPhone OS. Several sources claim that Steve Jobs—back in Campus—is now personally driving this project. However, until now there has been no reliable rumors on 13″ and 15″ models, much less one running full Mac OS X.

WSJ: Steve Jobs ‘pouring almost all of his attention’ into an Apple tablet

There isn’t a lot to go by here, but if the Wall Street Journal’s sources are to believed, recently-returned Apple CEO Steve Jobs is currently focusing the vast majority of his attention on the oft rumored tablet device, micromanaging every detail much in the way he did with the iPhone. The report also says that the tablet project has been twice killed by Jobs in recent years — first time because of bad battery life, which we get, and second because of insufficient memory, which seems a little less believable. Interestingly and uncharacteristically, Jobs took it upon himself to respond, saying via email, “much of your information is incorrect.” If Apple really is ramping up to unveiling a tablet, the first of its kind for the company, we have no doubt Jobs would be personally watching over every minute detail of it — what we really want to know is when we might see something materialize, and that’s still very much a mystery.

WSJ: Steve Jobs Killed Apple Tablet Twice Already

While we knew that Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ had been working on the company’s tablet project, the WSJ says that Steve has already “killed the project twice in recent years.” That’s right. The Apple tablet. Dead. Twice. Why?

The first time, apparently, he killed it for crummy battery life, and then the second time because it had “insufficient memory.” Both of which seem like minor roadbumps, not fatal sins—isn’t that the iPhone 3G nowadays to a T? But it actually kind of makes us happy, that Jobs—and Apple—are being that disciplined about it. Death to the weak models. That’s promising.

The report also reveals that since Jobs came back from medical leave, he has been incredibly involved not just with the development of the “touch screen gadget,” but with the strategy for marketing and advertising as well. Which isn’t surprising, since it’s the tablet and Steve Jobs, but apparently this involvement has been “jarring for some Apple employees who had grown accustomed to a level of freedom over strategy and products” while he was gone, said the WSJ, basing comments on a source who specifically said, “People have had to readjust” to Jobs’ management.

Though the article is ridden with anonymous “people familiar with the situation,” Jobs himself was contacted and responded with a curt, “Much of your information is incorrect.” Hey, if he didn’t specifically deny the existence of an Apple tablet, that’s close enough for our dreams. Tegra to hit ‘media pads’ soon says company man Mike Rayfield

Mike Rayfield, the general manager of NVIDIA’s mobile unit, sat down for a lengthy — if somewhat restrained — chat with Hexus recently, and he had some fairly interesting things to say about his company’s Tegra strategy. The discussion mostly consists of generalities about the roadmap for the high-power, low-weight chipset, but it takes a more interesting turn when Rayfield goes into detail on the types of devices we can expect to see in the near future. At about two minutes into the conversation, there’s mention of a “media pad,” which prompts some further inquiry from the interviewer. Rayfield goes on to describe the device as a “3G capable touchpad” ranging in size from 7- to 13-inches. Now what’s notable about the mention is that back in April reports were flying hot and heavy that Apple was working on a “media pad” device in partnership with Verizon which would “define the damn category.” We don’t like to wildly speculate, but since Apple and NVIDIA have a healthy history of teaming up on special projects, and since the rumored focus of the mythical Apple tablet is media playback and gaming, we wouldn’t rule out a possible connection here. If you want to do your own sleuthing, check out the full video for yourself after the break — and we recommend a frame-by-frame look at 2:23.

64 Shots of the Fake Apple Tablet Used in Real Life, For Better or Worse

For this week’s Photoshop contest, we asked you to create images showing the fabled Apple Tablet being used in day-to-day life. And there’s a clear line between those craving the tablet and those mocking it. I prefer the latter.

Apple’s iPod event set for September 9th with nary a tablet in sight?

We’ve already heard whispers that Apple has an iPod event in the works for the week of September 7th — as they do pretty much every year — and now alleged company sources are narrowing that date down, telling Digital Daily to mark its calendar for Wednesday, September 9th. Upgraded iPods are the apparent main course, along with some Cocktail discussion, but as for tablets… well, the sources are adamant it won’t get brought up at all. We’re still awaiting official word to come shooting out of Cupertino headquarters, but in the meantime, plan on keeping that Wednesday afternoon as free as possible.

Apple tablet pic ‘leaked’: this is the real one, we can feel it

Throw away everything you thought you knew about the truth. This is the one. We can’t wait to stuff one awkwardly into the fake keyboard tray of our fake MacBook Micro and live life just how Apple rumor sites have always wanted us to live it. Granted, Nowhere Else has gotten some pretty great scoops in the past, so we won’t rule anything out just now. The pic above lines up pretty well with all the rumors we’ve heard so far — which sort of helps and sort of hinders its veracity in our eyes. Nowhere Else isn’t calling it either way, if that helps you in your soul search for the truth. Another pic is after the break.

Update: Eagle-eyed tipster Terry points out that the “Welcome” graphic is an easy spot on Google Image Search, with that exact configuration and timing of converging letters from Leopard’s intro video showing up in the very first result. Try it for yourself! Not a good sign, folks.

Apple iPAD outed in Borders bookstore survey?

Now, we don’t really know what to think about this one, considering how many rumors are swirling about upcoming Apple devices at the moment, but make of it what you will. An online survey currently being conducted by Borders bookstore lists the “Apple iPAD (large screen reading device)” in one of its questions about e-readers. There along with the Amazon Kindle, the Kindle DX, the Sony Reader and the Plastic Logic Reader is the option to check “I plan to buy an Apple IPAD this year.” It’s safe to say that there are two options here: either Borders has access to some privileged Apple tablet / Kindle killer info that we, the wondering masses, do not (and yet is still making blunders like “Blackberry” and “Apple iTouch”) — or they’re just assuming that there must be some truth to all the fuss. And hey, who could blame them? Like we said, we’re not going to put too much stock in it, but go ahead and hit the read link to take the survey for yourself — but be forewarned: you’re going to have to dish on your opinion of Dan Brown before you get to the good stuff.
