Apple TV Gets Three New Channels Today

Apple TV Gets Three New Channels Today

As it continues to expand content sources on its set-top box, Apple today added three new channel to the Apple TV. Cable subscribers will now be able to download apps for A&E, The History Channel and Lifetime on their set-top boxes, courtesy of A&E Networks. However Apple TV users will require a cable subscription to access these content sources. Supported cable providers include DirecTV, Cablevision Optimum and Verizon FiOS. The network has said that it will add support for other major as well as local providers, but doesn’t say exactly what it will do that.

Over the past few months Apple has greatly expanded the content offering on its set-top box to better compete against rivals like Roku. Support for ABC and Bloomberg was added only recently, apart from the release of HBO Go for Apple TV.

The increasing number of content apps might serve Apple’s purpose of keeping the set-top box afloat, but they do much when it comes to increasing sales. For that a new Apple TV is required, which the company reportedly plans on launching later this year. Apparently it will come with a standalone App Store as well as the ability to play games. It will also have the current crop of content applications. The new Apple TV will come with better internal hardware and presumably design changes as well.

Original Apple TV iTunes Connectivity Issue Irritates Users Globally

Owners of first-generation Apple TV set top boxes (sold from 2007 through 2010) have been reporting issues that are keeping them from connecting to iTunes. The issue is said to be affecting users of the original Apple TV around the world. Without being able to connect to iTunes, users can’t buy content and may not have access to all their content.

Users are reporting that none of the normal troubleshooting procedures are fixing the connectivity issue. Neither rebooting nor restoring the set-top box seem to resolve the issue.

In addition, users of the iPhone on iOS6 or older recently found that they no longer had access to FaceTime. Some believe that the two issues are related and some sort of change at Apple has made the errors rear their heads. Some rumors suggest updates to protect Apple servers from Heartbleed led to these problems. Apple had a fast fix for the FaceTime issue with people needing to update their operating system. No such quick fix for the Apple TV has surfaced so far.

Apple hasn’t confirmed the issue officially, and as of this report, the problem appears to be unresolved.

First Generation Apple TV Facing Issues When Connecting To iTunes

first-generation-apple-tv

It looks like the first generation Apple TV units are unable to connect to iTunes. Users from around the world seem to be facing this issue. This was first reported on April 17th when a thread was started on Apple’s official support forums. By now that thread has become quite lengthy with repeated complaints by first-gen Apple TV users who are unable to make their set-top boxes connect to iTunes. The first generation Apple TV was released back in 2007 and the company sold it until 2010, so there are quite a few of them out there.

One poster described that this simply happened out of nowhere. He had full access to iTunes Store the night before, but in the morning it started displaying an “iTunes Store Not Available” message. Access completely disappeared, except for movie trailers, after he unplugged the Apple TV.

In the thread, users say that they have gone through a variety of processes to try and get iTunes back. Rebooting and even restoring the software doesn’t help, the first generation Apple TV is simply unable to connect to the iTunes Store.

Apple hasn’t commented on this as yet, so it is unclear if the company has already started working on a fix or not. We’ll keep our eyes peeled and will let you know as soon as we hear more.

2014 Apple TV May Rely On Motion Control Technology

2014 Apple TV May Rely On Motion Control Technology

There has already been a lot of speculation about the 2014 Apple TV set-top box. The expectation now is that Amazon’s Fire TV is likely to compel Apple to retaliate, and finally release a much needed revamped set-top box. We have already read a great deal about the features it may offer. A research note from one well known Apple analyst claims that the next set-top box will rely heavily on motion control technology, eliminating the need for the user to interact with the set-top box through a remote.

New Apple Set-Top Box Hinted In Comcast/Time Warner Cable Filings

New Apple Set Top Box Hinted In Comcast/Time Warner Cable Filings

Comcast and Time Warner Cable have made filings explaining to regulators why their merger should not be struck down. In February Comcast announced its intention to acquire time Warner Cable in a stock-for-stock transaction, with the former picking up TWC’s 284.9 million shares to the tune of an equity value going north of $45 billion. There’s much speculation that regulators might not be open to the idea of Comcast and TWC being merged, and they have the power to strike the deal down. Comcast seems to have revealed something about the next Apple TV in one of the documents in its filings.

David L. Cohen, an executive vice president at Comcast, writes in the document that even while Apple offers an online video service, it continues to “explores development of an Apple set-top box.” Recent rumors suggest that Apple has long been in talks with Comcast for an internet TV streaming service that would go through its set-top box. These talks have apparently slowed down due to Comcast’s bid for TWC.

Other rumors suggest that Apple’s new set-top box was due be launched as soon as this month, but the deal has pushed it back. It remains unclear if a deal with Comcast will ever be reached, but the more Apple waits on this, the more its rivals will benefit. The TV market is already filled with similar products from Google, Roku and even Amazon. Apple surely needs to step up its game.

Why Roku Matters More Than Ever

Why Roku Matters More Than Ever

You have more streaming TV options than you could hope for, especially now that Amazon has entered the fray. And while Apple TV, Chromecast, and Fire TV all have their strengths, they also share the same crippling weakness: self-interest. That’s what makes Roku so important.

Analyst Thinks Amazon’s Fire TV Will Motivate Apple To Revamp The Apple TV

Analyst Thinks Amazons Fire TV Will Motivate Apple To Revamp The Apple TVEarlier today Amazon announced the Fire TV, a device that has long been rumored, which is basically their answer to other set top boxes like the Apple TV and Roku. In fact its asking price of $99 is on par with Apple’s own asking price of $99, making it a pretty credible competitor to the Apple TV.

So is this something Apple should be worried about? Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster certainly seems to think so and believes that the Fire TV is basically what the Apple TV should have been all along, and that he hopes with the launch of the Fire TV that Apple will finally start to do something about it.
