Apple Reportedly In Talks With Networks Over Content For Its TV Set

Apple Reportedly In Talks With Networks Over Content For Its TV Set

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a full fledged TV set. The company hasn’t said if it plans on entering the TV market with a product of its own, though many analysts are of the view that Apple may release its TV set next year. The company is reportedly negotiating with networks and production studios over content for the TV. ESPN, HBO and Viacom are named among the companies Apple is talking to. It is unclear right now if any deals will be finalized in the near future.

The report goes on to claim that Apple might form its own pay TV service, delivering content to subscribers for a fee, essentially becoming a cable company albeit one that delivers content over the internet. It is believed that this pay TV service might be launched alongside the full fledged TV set. Apple would essentially control the entire TV experience on its new product, thus eliminating the need for customers to hook it up with a cable box from another company. Apple has reportedly declined to comment on this rumor and so has Viacom. ESPN spokesman Chris LaPlaca has confirmed that they’ve had talks, but he refers to them as “very, very exploratory” in nature and adds that no formal discussions have taken place yet.

The latest rumor, via Quartz, mentions that Apple’s been chatting up Viacom, HBO, Disney, ESPN, et al about offering their content on a new TV service. VEVO Channel Reportedly Launching On Apple TV Later This Week

VEVO Channel Reportedly Launching On Apple TV Later This Week

VEVO has become the go-to service for watching music videos from over 25,000 global artists. It also offers original content now. The service is quite popular with music lovers. Recently we reported that VEVO iOS app had been updated with full AirPlay support, allowing users to beam music videos to their television set through an Apple TV. There has been chatter lately that VEVO might be added as a separate channel in Apple TV, and if Wall Street Journal’s latest report turns out to be true, the channel might be added within this week. Users would then be able to watch videos on VEVO straight through the Apple TV, they wouldn’t need an iOS app to beam videos to their TVs.

The report also claims that VEVO will be added as an app on Samsung smart TVs as well, but that is expected to happen after a few weeks. VEVO’s library contains over 70,000 videos from major record labels such as Sony and Universal. Being able to reach viewers on mediums other than YouTube, where majority of the users watch videos uploaded by VEVO, is likely to boost its ad revenue. Google reportedly keeps as much as 50 percent of the ad revenue generated through YouTube. VEVO is expected to serve ads on both the Apple TV and Samsung smart TVs, it would presumably receive a much larger cut as opposed to the one it receives from the world’s biggest video streaming website.
