Tim Cook Says Hard To Call Apple TV A ‘Hobby’ These Days

Tim Cook Says Hard To Call Apple TV A Hobby These Days

Even though there have been countless rumors that Apple is working on a full fledged TV set, its only TV related offering is the set-top box, Apple TV. This has been around for quite a while and initially the company itself, back then lead by Steve Jobs, dubbed it as a “hobby.” Since then the perception has always been that Apple has sort of always kept this product going just because its a hobby, but that doesn’t mean its not a popular product. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook remarked at the company’s shareholders meeting recently that ”It’s a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days.”

The company’s TV offering hasn’t been updated for quite a while now, even though it was expected that a new Apple TV set-top box will be released late last year. Now rumors suggest that it may be unveiled within the next few months, but Jim Dalrymple of The Loop claims that its not going to happen any time soon. Dalrymple has been right on many occasions before, his predictions are presumed to carry weight.

Apple Made Over $1B On The Sale Of Around 10M Apple TV Units In 2013

Apple Reportedly Scaled Back Ambitious Apple TV Plans

Apple Reportedly Scaled Back Ambitious Apple TV PlansAccording to our report from earlier, Apple is rumored to be launching their new Apple TV in April, but might only release it later on in the year. The report originated from Bloomberg and has since been confirmed by The Wall Street Journal who has added some insight into the rumors as well. Interestingly it seems that apart from your typical hardware upgrade to the Apple TV, Apple is said to have had more ambitious plans for the device and were actually planning on offering TV shows and movies exclusively over the internet where customers could purchase content using their Apple ID.

However it seems that due to resistance from content providers, Apple could be changing their plans. For instance instead of acquiring the rights from media companies themselves, Apple would instead rely on cable providers to acquire the programming rights and use them as a proxy. What this means is that if you wanted to watch certain shows on the Apple TV, you might need to have a subscription with the cable provider as opposed to dealing with Apple directly. Other reports for scaling back include Apple’s original demand for full seasons of shows, which has now been reportedly scaled back to just five episodes of back catalogue as per the industry standard.

Apple TV Rumored For April Announcement

Apple TV Rumored For April AnnouncementThe Apple TV is due for a refresh as it has been a while since we had last heard anything new about it. The rumors claim that 2014 could be the year when we might see a refresh and now thanks to a report from Bloomberg, we have a more specific timeframe which is in April. This is according to Bloomberg’s sources who has informed them that a new Apple TV could be launched as soon as April, although we’re not sure if it will just be quietly introduced into the Apple Store or if there will be an event for it as April is just a couple of months away from WWC 2014.

Evidence that Apple could have a new Apple TV in the works was discovered in iOS 7 where there were references made to an “AppleTV4,1” which is definitely a step higher than the previous Apple TV which was referred to as “AppleTV3,2”. Based on the numbering, we can only expect that Apple will be making some big changes to the Apple TV device, although what exactly remains unknown, although the rumors are claiming a faster processor and a simpler user interface. In any case aside from a possible announcement in April, sources are claiming that the Apple TV will only ship later in the year, possibly before Christmas, although we’re not sure what is up with the delay.
