Apple TV 2 5.3 Untethered Jailbreak Released

Apple TV 2 5.3 Untethered Jailbreak Released

Often called a “hobby,” the Apple TV is actually quite a decent set-top box that has performed relatively well in the market. Its the company’s only TV offering despite mounting rumors of a full fledged HDTV set. Since the set-top box runs on a modified version of iOS, its firmware can be jailbroken as well. Thanks to the recent progress made by the jailbreak community, Apple TV 2 5.3 untethered jailbreak has finally be released. The third generation Apple TV still hasn’t been cracked.

The folks at FireCore have released a new version of Seas0nPass which can be used to jailbreak Apple TV 2 on 5.3 firmware. Apart from that, they have also released an updated version of aTV Flash, which basically opens up a whole new world on the Apple TV, it even includes a web browser. The Apple TV 6.0 update was released in fall 2013, the jailbreak is not compatible with this update which brought features like AirPlay from iCloud and iTunes Radio. The evad3rs developers team has been monumental in releasing the iOS 7 untethered jailbreak, they’re also working with @nitoTV on a jailbreak for Apple TV 6.0+ firmware. FireCore says that “encouraging progress” has been made, work still continues and it can’t be said for sure when a jailbreak for said firmware will finally be released.

Mirror Android Display On Apple TV Using Mirror App

The CyanogenMod team recently released a new app called Screencast that lets Android users record the display of the device with audio. You can then retrieve the saved video from your device and play it on anything you want. Though wouldn’t it be nice to be able to mirror your Android device’s display in real time to an Apple TV? That’s where the new Mirror app comes in, it has been released today in beta version and CyanogenMod’s well known developer Koushik Dutta invites people to give the app a shot and report if they find any bugs.

The Mirror app actually offers the best of both worlds, not only does it let users mirror the screen to an Apple TV, but it also lets them create a video recording of their device. Those of you who are willing to try out the app need to keep in mind that your device must be rooted on Android 4.4.2, there’s no need to install a custom ROM though. Then, you must join the ClockworkMod community as well as the beta program prior to downloading the app from the Google Play Store. As always, these apps and communities are absolutely free, you won’t have to pay anything to gain access. You’ll obviously need to have an Apple TV, if you don’t have Cupertino’s set-top box, you might as well wait for Chromecast to receive Android mirroring support.

Apple TV Bloomberg App Brings 24 Hour Live News Stream

Apple TV Bloomberg App Brings 24 Hour Live News Stream

Cupertino’s set-top box, the Apple TV, has received quite a lot of new content partners this year. Apple isn’t done adding new partners, Apple TV has now received a couple of new apps from content partners. There’s a Watch ABC app through which users can stream content from local ABC affiliates. KOR TV is a Korean language channel which can be streamed through the set-top box now. Crackle app brings movies and TV. The biggest addition is that of a Bloomberg app, through which users will be able to keep themselves up to date with the news 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Bloomberg has actually become the first channel to add 24 hour news stream to the Apple TV. Content accessible through the app is similar to what users can find on Bloomberg TV’s website as well as its mobile applications. There’s on-demand content with clips and full shows, special live stream for breaking news and various events as well as a continuous live stream of news. The Bloomberg Apple TV app is going to be updated in the coming weeks, and the playlist feature already available in its iOS app will be added to the set-top box as well. It will let users create playlists and resume watching from the point where they left off on another device. Notifications feature is being worked on at this point in time, users will be able to get alerts for shows and events on the Apple TV.

Apple TV adds four new channels

Apple TV has added four new channels, with the compact set-top box gaining more ways to watch movies in addition to broadening cable TV access from ABC. The four fresh additions include “Watch ABC”, which hooks into local ABC affiliate content for those with a valid subscription, Crackle, for streaming movies and TV shows, Bloomberg, […]

Bloomberg Brings 24-Hour Live News To Apple TV; Crackle, KOR TV And Watch ABC Also Added

    tech-apple-tv-vevo-app

Apple continues adding new channel partners to its Apple TV hardware, and now it’s rolling out four new ones today (via 9to5Mac), including Watch ABC for streaming local ABC affiliate content, Crackle for movies and TV, and KOR TV, a Korean language channel. There’s also Bloomberg, which is going to be streaming a live 24-hour news channel that provides content seven days a week.

This launch is just the most recent in what’s been an increasingly fast-paced rollout of new content partners on Apple’s set-top box, but it brings some interesting ingredients to the mix, including local broadcast TV streaming and a 24-hour news channel, which are key ingredients to what many users would consider basic TV service. Apple TV didn’t start off as a really viable cord-cutting alternative for people looking to ditch their cable subscriptions, but it’s been building up a piecemeal library of a la carte content that begins to become a truly worthy option.

It’s true that many of the services are still tied to cable service and TV packages, including the new Watch ABC channel and the HBO Go app that was launched previously, but it’s best to take all of these launches as baby steps in a larger plan that sees content unbundled from traditional sources. Apple’s Apple TV bet is a long play, and I think we’re only just starting to see the next curve around the bend on the long road to what will ultimately be a robust alternative to subscription-based bundled TV services.

Of course, that takes for granted these service providers can deliver content in a high-quality, reliable way. I’ve heard less than flattering things about the WSJ channel, which delivers live news content, but only during certain hours, unlike the Bloomberg effort. Still, the building blocks are falling into place, and Apple just needs to continue this rollout while avoiding a big blockade from legacy players along the way

Why Apple’s 2013 promises bigger things for 2014

Apple had a somewhat strong year in 2013. The company showed off the iPad Air, unveiled a new iPad mini with a Retina display, and its upcoming Mac Pro might just be the most impressive desktop the company has ever launched. And as its revenue showed during the period, customers seemed to like what the […]
