Apple TV didn’t even warrant a mention at the iPhone event earlier this month, but as expected
Over the past few weeks it has been consistently rumored that Apple is going to make a TV related announcement in the coming months. At first it was said that perhaps a new Apple TV might be unveiled alongside the new iPhones on September 10th. That didn’t happen, then it was said that the company will release a new software update for the existing set-top box on September 18th, alongside iOS 7. Well, Apple has indeed released Apple TV software update 6.0, a few days after it was rumored to go live. It also brings the features it was expected to.
First up is iCloud AirPlay. The feature lets users stream content that they own, such as TV shows, movies and music, on an Apple TV that isn’t configured with their Apple ID. What this means is that a user can stream a movie to a friend’s Apple TV, without having to first enter their iTunes credentials in the set-top box. A connected iOS device, which is configured with that Apple ID, will be required to provide the wireless authentication required for content streaming. iTunes Radio, Apple’s new music streaming service, also comes to the Apple TV via this update. Last but not the least, Apple TV software update 6.0 enables users to access purchases from iTunes Music Store and photos from a shared Photo Stream as well as sync their podcasts.

Posted in: Today's ChiliApple may not have made any mention of an Apple TV software update at its event earlier this month, but it turns out it did have one set to roll out alongside its new iPhones. Available for download now, version 6.0 is a fairly big upgrade compared to other recent updates, bringing with it support for Apple’s new iTunes Radio service, along with new features like AirPlay from iCloud and the ability to browse and buy music from the iTunes store right from the Apple TV. You can now also sync podcasts across your various Apple devices and listen to them on your Apple TV, and view photos and videos you’ve added to your shared photo streams. The UI, however, hasn’t been updated to match iOS 7, remaining mostly unchanged from the most recent redesign.
Update: As All Things D notes, the AirPlay from iCloud feature is only available to devices running iOS 7.%Gallery-slideshow89886%

Before Apple’s September 10th event, it was being rumored that perhaps the company might also launch a new Apple TV alongside the new iPhones. At its event, Apple didn’t even mention the set-top box. It was rumored earlier today that a major software update for this device will be rolled out on September 18th, the same day on which iOS 7 is publicly released. Latest reports suggest that the company is currently developing a new Apple TV and it might release it next month, possibly alongside the new iPads.
It was said a few weeks ago that Apple will make a TV related announcement this year. Some expect that it might finally unveil its much rumored HDTV set, while others believe that the set-top box will be refreshed with new hardware. Nothing is known for sure right now, not even about the new Apple TV that is supposedly going to launch in October. Some analysts are of the view that a full fledged Apple HDTV set might not come until next year. The Apple TV received a minor refresh in 2012, not much was changed back then. Lets see if Apple really does plan on improving its TV offering, we’re bound to hear more about this product over the coming weeks, if the launch is indeed slated to take place next month.
