Apple Snapped Up 3 Years Worth Of Sapphire Displays

Apple Snapped Up 3 Years Worth Of Sapphire DisplaysAccording to one of our earlier reports, Apple had reportedly secured enough sapphire material from GT Advanced Technologies to make anywhere between 100-200 million sapphire display. Many had assumed that the sapphire displays would be used in Apple’s iPhone 6, but those rumors were later contradicted with another rumor that suggested that the sapphire displays might be used in Apple’s iWatch instead. Or will it? In an interview with the folks at GigaOm, Canonical’s CEO, Mark Shuttleworth, revealed that Apple had snapped up about 3 years worth of sapphire displays. (more…)

Tesla CEO Confirms They “Had Conversations” With Apple

Tesla CEO Confirms They Had Conversations With AppleEarlier this week, it was reported that Apple had apparently met up with Tesla’s CEO and there were rumors that suggested that Apple would be interested in acquiring the car manufacturer. It was a bit of a stretch since Apple’s vehicular plans were more towards integrating its software, as opposed to actually building cars themselves. That being said, in an interview with Bloomberg, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, has come forward and confirmed that Tesla “had conversations” with Apple, but unfortunately he could not comment on whether or not those conversations might have anything to do with Apple acquiring the company.

However he did state that at the current time, an acquisition of Tesla seemed “very unlikely”. According to Musk, “If one or more companies had approached us last year about such things there’s no way we could really comment on that. We had conversations with Apple, I can’t comment on whether those revolved around any kind of acquisition.” However the way it was worded does seem like Musk isn’t exactly denying it, nor is he confirming it. Then again if Musk were to outright say no, it might lead to more questions which could reveal what those conversations, which are obviously private, are about. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has stated in the past that the company would be willing to make large acquisitions if it made sense, but we’re not sure if acquiring Tesla would make sense to Apple. What do you guys think?

iWatch Rumored To Feature Flexible Display From TPKWe’re sure that many are wondering what Apple could get up to with its rumored smartwatch, the iWatch as it is tentatively referred to as for now. Intel CEO Says Relationship With Apple Has Gotten Closer

Intel CEO Says Relationship With Apple Has Gotten CloserAs it stands, Intel’s chips power most of the computers around the world. In fact it was almost a decade ago that Apple made the move to Intel processors for their Mac computers, but as ARM-powered devices are starting to gain more ground in society today, there have been rumors that Apple could be turning away from Intel to lessen their reliance on the chip manufacturer. Instead, the rumors suggest that Apple is exploring how to use ARM in their Mac computers. Of course there would most certainly be drawbacks if Apple were ever to do this, which we guess might have prompted one Redditor to ask Intel’s CEO, Brian Krzanich, on how their relationship with Apple is.

Taking part in a Reddit AMA, Krzanich replied to the question by saying, “We’ve always had a very close relationship with Apple and it continues to grow closer. Sure (it’s) grown close over the years, especially since… they started to use our technology in their systems.” As it stands it does make sense for Apple to keep using Intel chips as most apps used today on computers have been designed and optimized for such chipsets in mind, although we guess it still is a pretty entertaining notion to think that perhaps one day in the future, we might start seeing Apple’s own A-series of SoCs powering future Mac computers.

Apple To Release 4.7″, 5.6″ iPhones This Q3 2014 (Rumor)

Apple To Release 4.7, 5.6 iPhones This Q3 2014 (Rumor)Apple certainly pulled off quite a surprise in their last iPhone release, where the communications device actually saw a split in the line to the iPhone 5s as well as the “budget” iPhone 5c. This was a first for Apple for their smartphone, and it does seem as though the trend is set to continue with the next generation iPhone (dubbed the iPhone 6 at this point in time), where it is rumored to be arrive in two screen sizes – 4.7” and 5.6”. Isn’t it refreshing to see Cupertino dance to the tune of other smartphone manufacturers by going the way of the phablet?

iPhone Market Share In China On The Rise [Report]

iPhone Market Share In China On The Rise [Report]

China is without a doubt a very lucrative market, Apple certainly knows that, which is why it worked for so long in trying to get its iPhones on the world’s largest mobile carrier, China Mobile. Based on data collected by research firm IDC, The Wall Street Journal reports that iPhone market share in China is steadily rising. A full one percentage point growth was witnessed in the previous quarter alone, despite the fact that sales of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on China Mobile aren’t included in these figures. Apple only inked the deal with the carrier towards end of December.

Apple Back Among The Top Five Smartphone Vendors In China On iPhone 5s Success, IDC Reports

    sanlitun-apple-store-china

Apple has gained an entire percentage point of market share and cracked the top five smartphone manufacturers, according to the latest figures from research firm IDC. Apple’s share rose from 6 to 7 percent during the fourth quarter of last year, according to a new report (via WSJ) and though that isn’t a huge bump, it makes Apple the fifth-largest smartphone maker in China.

There’s also reason to believe that Apple could climb higher still: These numbers don’t include any sales made through Apple’s partnership with China Mobile, which only began selling the iPhone on January 17, and is in the process of building out its new network to support the device across a wider swath of the population.

Apple’s rise late last year might have something to do with the fact that the company opted to launch its latest iPhone models in the Greater China market simultaneously with its North American and major European market launches – this marks the first time it has done that, and likely helped boost overall iPhone sales by a considerable margin in the company’s fiscal holiday quarter. Apple also won a bigger chunk of a Chinese smartphone market that isn’t growing with nearly the speed it has in the past, so the China Mobile deal is even more significant, as it represents a way for Apple to grow its share in the key market without having to seek out new smartphone buyers.

For Apple, the China Mobile deal represents a huge potential new buyer pool, and signs are good if the iPhone 5s and 5c are already helping drive up their share. But China’s own Xiaomi is nipping at its heels, coming in sixth overall among smartphone makers in the country per IDC, so that could make for a tight race between the two as the Android-based startup OEM continues to chart impressive growth at home.

Ever since the rise of Apple’s touchscreen devices, it’s seemed only a matter of time until a touchscreen MacBook arrives. But those who wince at finger-smeared screens may not need to worry — a newly uncovered patent suggests Apple is more interested in revamping the bezel.
